Abstract

Ulos cloth is an integral part of the Batak ethnic cultural identity. In addition to being an important part of customs, Ulos cloth is also used in various events such as birth, marriage, welcoming guests, death, and others. Each type of Ulos cloth has a motif that is full of symbolic meaning and honor. The Ulos fabric trade, which is currently centered in Pematangsiantar City, has experienced significant growth due to the strategic position and dominance of the Batak Ethnicity in the city. It is interesting to examine how Ulos cloth contributes to the Creative Economy of MSMEs, especially as a cultural identity, especially after the 1998 Monetary Crisis. The crisis had far-reaching socio-economic impacts, and directly affected the Ulos cloth trade in Pematangsiantar City. This research aims to observe the phenomenon using historical research methodology with four stages: Heuristics (data collection), Verification (data filtering), Interpretation (data analysis), and Historiography (historical narrative preparation). The data used comes from two main sources, namely oral data from interviews with Ulos business actors in Pasar Horas Kota Pematangsiantar and written data from reliable sources such as books and journals. This historical research methodology aims to reveal the influence of Ulos Cloth MSMEs on the economic development of Pematangsiantar City after the 1998 Monetary Crisis. It is hoped that this research can provide a comprehensive picture of the condition of the Ulos cloth trade in Pematangsiantar City after the 1998 Monetary Crisis, as well as provide new insights into the contribution of Ulos Cloth MSMEs to the local economy

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on Pasar Horas in Pematang Siantar, North Sumatra, as well as the surrounding communities. This research aims to explore the state of the economy in Pasar Horas during the COVID-19 pandemic and the effectiveness of assistance provided by the government to businesses in traditional markets. A qualitative approach with historical methods was used to gain an in-depth understanding of the conditions. The results show that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused a drastic decrease in income for Pasar Horas traders. The assistance provided by the government is considered inadequate by some people, while others feel that they do not need assistance because they already have enough material resources. There are also different views among the community around Pasar Horas regarding the assistance provided during the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on the results and discussion, it is recommended that the local government increase assistance to Horas Market traders who are economically affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Horas Market traders need to innovate in selling, such as increasing online marketing. The community around Pasar Horas needs to continue to support local merchants by purchasing their products. The implementation of health protocols should also be improved in Pasar Horas to ensure the safety and health of traders and buyers during the pandemic

Abstract

The fuel price policy during the 2004-2014 administration of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) has become a major concern in the social and economic context of society. The policy has undergone several price adjustments during his 10-year administration, which significantly affected the price of basic necessities and the consumptive lifestyle of the community. This study aims to analyze the implications of the fuel price policy on consumption patterns and socio-economic welfare of slum communities in Lingkungan 3, Kelurahan Aur, Medan Maimun, in the 2004-2014 period. The research method used is qualitative with a case study approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and analysis of related documents. The results showed that the fuel price increase policy during SBY's administration had a significant impact, especially on low-income communities. Despite the increase in fuel prices, the level of community consumption focused on basic needs, but also included electronic goods such as televisions, refrigerators, and cellphones. In addition, the consumption pattern of electronic goods in slum communities in Neighborhood 3, Kelurahan Aur, Medan Maimun, for the period 2004-2014 shows the existence of luxuries in household appliances despite low income. This indicates that the consumptive culture of the community in Neighborhood 3 tends to be high, but the spirit for a better life is not evident from efforts to save or divert expenditure to long-term investment. In conclusion, the SBY administration's fuel price policy has complex implications for the level of community consumption, especially in relation to electronic goods. This shows the need for special attention in managing fuel price policy so that it does not only have an impact on the state's fiscal aspects, but also pays attention to social impacts, especially for low-income people
