Abstract

The use of online reading materials to improve students’ reading comprehension achievement is highly recommended. Online reading is separate from reading printed texts since it involved reading digital content such as e-books, e-dictionaries, web pages, and online education. As a result, the study's objectives were to look into the use of online reading resources to help pupils enhance their reading comprehension and to determine whether there is a substantial mean difference between pupils who had been instructed utilizing online materials for reading compared to those who were not. The quasi-experimental design was employed to evaluate the pretest and posttest results in the experimental and control groups. The 70 students were selected and put into two groups on purpose. There were 35 pupils in the experimental group and 35 students in the control group. In addition, pretest, posttest and students’ perception were used to collect the data. The data were analyzed using the SPSS v.25 program and the t-test (paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test). The paired sample t-test result in the experimental group is 9,420> t-table (df=34) is 1.690 at 0.05 The significance threshold was 0.000 0.05, and the sig. (2-tailed) was 0.000 0.05. It was reasonable to establish that students' reading comprehension achievement improved significantly after being taught utilizing online reading materials at SMP Tri Dharma Palembang. Furthermore, the independent sample t-test result The resulting t-value is 20.075> t-table (df=68) is 1.667 at the significant threshold of 0.05 and sig. (2-tailed) is 0.000 0.05. It signifies that there was a statistically significant difference in mean comparing the experimental and control groups. Abstract

Understanding grammar is essential for students learning English as a foreign language. Grammar rules provide order and clarity to the language so that students could understand how words, phrases and sentences are combined. According to Ameilani (2019), "Grammar is the most challenging issue, Although I can speak English, I sometimes get confused when arranging words and sentences related to grammar" one participant said. Therefore, the purposes of this study were to ascertain whether there was a significant improvement in student achievement in understanding simple present tense after being taught using the STAD method and to find out whether there was a significant mean difference between students who were taught using the STAD method and those who were not taught using the STAD method. This study used a quasi-experimental design method. 66 students in the eighth grade in SMP Negeri 38 Palembang were chosen by the researcher using the purposive sampling and divided into the experimental and the control classes. Based on the test results using Wilcoxon test, there was a significant improvement in students' achievement in understanding simple present tense after being taught with STAD method. Based on Mann Whitney test, it was also found that there was a significant mean difference between students who were taught using STAD method and those who were not taught using STAD method. In conclusion, the use of STAD method was effective in improving students' understanding at SMP Negeri 38 Palembang.

Abstract

This study was conducted to assess the English speaking proficiency of students. The students' English speaking achievement was abysmal. The aims of this study were to determine: (1) the extent of improvement in speaking skills with and without the use of the direct instructional strategy, and (2) whether there was a notable improvement in the speaking skills of students who received the direct instructional strategy compared to those who did not. This study employed quasi-experimental research methodology. A total of 16 students were selected as a sample, with 16 students assigned to the experimental class and another 16 students assigned to the control class. The data were gathered by the administration of an oral examination. The data were analysed using both paired sample t-tests and independent sample t-tests. Through data analysis, it was determined that there was a notable surge in pupils' proficiency in oral communication. The paired sample t-test yielded a t-test statistic of -28.428 and a significance value of 0.00, which was less than the predetermined significance level of α (0.05). This demonstrates an enhancement in students' oral communication abilities. Furthermore, the results of the independent sample t-test indicate that the calculated t-test value (-13.075) and the corresponding p-value (0.00) were both below the predetermined significance level (α) of 0.05. The results indicate a substantial disparity in the average speaking abilities of pupils who received teaching through the direct instruction technique compared to those who did not get such instruction.
