Abstract

The aims of this research was to find out the students’ difficulties into English and to know how the students were cope with the difficulties in translating descriptive text from Indonesian into English at the eighth grade students of junior high school Tri Dharma Palembang. The descriptive qualitative research was used in this sample of this research. The sample of this research was the eighth grade students at Junior High School Tri Dharma Palembang. There were fifteen participants of students and there was one participant of their English teacher. The data was taken by using test and interview as the instrument. The research finding showed that the highest percentage of students’ difficulties in translating was grammar (27%). the highest number of the students’ grammar difficulties was phrase (45%). The second difficulty faced by students was clarity and cohesion & naturalness (24%). The third difficulty face by students was spelling & style (14%) and the last difficulty was realizing & understanding (11%). Based on the result of students and their English teacher interview matrix, it showed that students asked their friends and teacher to help solving their problem. It could be concluded that students had difficulties in translating Indonesian descriptive text into English was Grammar and the students asked their friends or teacher to give them a help.

Abstract

In order to develop the listening skill, there are many kinds of media that can be used, including CD, tape record, audio, video, etc. However, the researcher chose audio as a media in teaching and learning. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to find out if there was a significant improvement on students’ listening comprehension achievement after being taught by using audio. The other one was that if there was a significant mean difference between the students who were taught by using audio and those who were not. The research method was a quantitative. Furthermore, the researcher employed an experimental study. As a design, the researcher employed a quasi-experimental study. The population of this research were all of the second year of SMP Negeri 38 Palembang students. Therefore, the researcher took VIII.3 class (experimental) and VIII.7 class (control) for being the sample. The researcher employed a fill in the blank test, true false, multiple choices, matching the answer, order, and matching the phrases as the primary instrument to collect data. The researcher used the Paired and Independent Sample T-Test formula to calculate the data. With regard to the effect of using audio as an alternative method in improving students’ listening comprehension achievement, the result of Paired Sample T-test reveals that using audio as an alternative method has a positive effect. According to the outcomes of the independent sample t-test, there was a significant difference between the post-test scores of control and experimental class. It can be concluded that audio gave positive effect on the students’ listening comprehension achievement of SMP Negeri 38 Palembang.

Abstract

Storytelling is the process of someone conveying and receiving a story through various media, such as words, pictures or sound. Therefore, it can be said that storytelling can improve students' reading skills. This study aims to examine whether the story telling learning method is effective in improving students' reading skills. Researchers conducted research at SMP Negeri 3 Palembang Class VII.10 with a total of 31 students. Using pre-test and post-test designs as pre-experimental procedures, data collection techniques used in this study were pre-test and post-test. Then the data was tested with a normality test of 0.00 less than 0.05 (0.00 <0.05). Then all pre and post test data are normally distributed. From the results of the analysis of single paired t-test data, it can be seen that the results of the t-analysis obtained -7,803 df 30 significance value for the control group 0.000 H0 was rejected He was accepted, t was obtained for the experimental group -14.351 df 30 for the experimental group a significance value of 0.000 H0 was rejected Accepted independent t-test with a t-test of 10.015 df 60 and a significance value of 2 with 0.000. It can be concluded that telling stories can increase vocabulary in class VII.10 of SMP Negeri 3 Palembang, and this research shows that students always increase their English vocabulary because vocabulary plays an important role in everyday life.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to get empirical evidence of the improving the tenth grade students’ reading comprehension achievement through KWL (Know-Want-Learn) Strategy of narrative text. The population was the tenth grade students at SMK Negeri 2 Palembang. There were 806 students and 60 students were taken as the sample purposively. They were divided into 2 groups. Namely, experimental group and control group. Each group consisted of 30 students. In collecting the data, the test were used (pretest and posttest). The writer used paired sample t-test (pretest- posttest) and independent sample t-test. In conclusion, there was improving using Know-Want-Learn strategy reading comprehension of narrative text, it could be seen from the results of pretest experimental group was 50.73 and the results of the posttest increased to be 78.60. The mean of score pretest and posttest experimental was 13.267. The results of pretest in control group was 48.07. The results posttest increased to be 61.53. The mean of score pretest and posttest control was 6.867. And also there was significant mean difference between the students showed that pretest and posttest experimental group was 78.60 and pretest-posttest control group was 61.53.

Abstract

Having problem of reaching the tested aspects of TOEFL particularly on achieving target score of TOEFL set, participants needed to be provided an intervention with TOEFL preparation class before encountering the test. For that reason, this community service activity highlighted the impact of TOEFL preparation class on the non EFL learners’ achievement. One class was used as the sample of this activity in which it consisted of twenty students coming from different major in one of private universities in Palembang, southern region of sumatera. Descriptive analysis with experimental design was used. A test was administered to see whether or not there was a significant improvement on the non EFL learners’ TOEFL-like score achievement. The results revealed that achievement level of the participants were in the elementary and intermediate category. Besides, statistically there was a significant improvement on the EFL learners’ TOEFL-like score intervened by the provision of TOEFL preparation class. Thus, it could be further concluded that TOEFL preparation class was impactful on the non EFL undergaduates’ English achievement. Keywords: TOEFL preparation class; Non EFL Classroom; Non EFL learners’                  achievement

Abstract

Majority of Indonesian EFL young learners struggle with mastering English vocabulary. This community service activity was about to see whether or not incorporating thematic pictures could enrich young learners’ English vocabulary. It used quantitative approach with descriptive analysis. Conveniently, one class was taken as the sample of this current activity which consisted of fourteen participants coming from different grades of elementary school. A Dictation test was administered as pretest and posttest before and after intervention to portray the young learners’ achievement level. The result showed that using thematic pictures was significantly impactful in enriching young learners’ English vocabulary mastery (.00 < .05). Ultimately, some pedagogical implication were also addressed accordingly in this present activity to young learners, future facilitators as well as researchers. Keywords: thematic pictures; vocabulary mastery; young learners.  Abstrak: Mayoritas pembelajar muda di Indonesia memiliki masalah dengan penguasaan kosakata Bahasa Inggris. Kegiatan Pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk melihat apakah penggunaan gambar tematik dapat memperkaya kosa kata bahasa Inggris pelajar muda atau tidak. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan analisis deskriptif. Mudahnya, satu kelas diambil sebagai sampel kegiatan kali ini yang terdiri dari empat belas peserta yang berasal dari berbagai tingkatan sekolah dasar. Tes Dikte diberikan sebagai pretest dan posttest sebelum dan sesudah intervensi untuk menggambarkan tingkat prestasi pelajar muda. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan gambar tematik memberikan dampak yang signifikan dalam memperkaya penguasaan kosakata bahasa Inggris pelajar muda. Pada akhirnya, beberapa implikasi pedagogis juga dibahas dalam kegiatan ini kepada pelajar muda, fasilitator masa depan, serta peneliti. Kata kunci: gambar tematik; pembelajar muda; penguasaan kosakata

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is essential to young learners in learning English. This activity of community service was aimed at utilizing flashcards in English vocabulary instruction. A convenient sample of thirteen participants, mostly females between the ages of thirteen and eighteen, was chosen for this current activity. This was carried out in one of orphanages in Palembang, South Sumatera. To monitor and evaluate the degree of vocabulary achievement of the EFL learners, a vocabulary test was administered both before and after the intervention. The results indicated that the t obtained was much higher than the set t table and p value earned was much lower than .05. Therefore, it could be concluded that using flashcards significantly accelerated the acquisition of English vocabulary by young learners. Lastly, some fruitful implication were directed to future facilitators, researchers, and young learners, as participants.Keywords: flashcards; teaching; English vocabulary; young learners  Abstrak: Penguasaan kosakata sangat penting bagi pelajar muda dalam mempelajari bahasa Inggris. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini ditujukan untuk memanfaatkan kartu flash dalam pengajaran kosakata bahasa Inggris. Sampel yang terdiri dari tiga belas peserta, sebagian besar perempuan berusia antara tiga belas dan delapan belas tahun, dipilih untuk kegiatan saat ini. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan di salah satu panti asuhan di Palembang, Sumatera Selatan. Untuk memantau dan mengevaluasi tingkat pencapaian kosakata pelajar EFL, tes kosakata diberikan sebelum dan sesudah intervensi. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa nilai t yang diperoleh jauh lebih tinggi daripada t tabel yang ditetapkan dan nilai p yang diperoleh jauh lebih rendah dari .05. Oleh karena itu, dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan kartu flash secara signifikan mempercepat perolehan kosakata bahasa Inggris oleh pelajar muda. Terakhir, beberapa implikasi yang bermanfaat ditujukan di masa mendatang kepada fasilitator, peneliti, dan pelajar muda, sebagai peserta.Kata kunci: kartu flash; pengajaran; kosakata bahasa Inggris; pelajar muda

Abstract

Penggunaan campur kode oleh siswa dalam pembelajaran sangat sering terjadi. Campur kode adalah keadaan ketika seseorang menggunakan lebih dari satu bahasa dalam suatu pembicaraan atau pembicaraan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis campur kode dan alasan mahasiswa menggunakan campur kode dalam proses pembelajaran di Universitas Indo Global Mandiri. Metodologi penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif. Subyek penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa Bahasa Inggris semester enam di Universitas Indo Global Mandiri. Dalam pengumpulan data, peneliti menggunakan observasi untuk mengetahui jenis campur kode yang digunakan siswa dan menggunakan wawancara untuk mengetahui alasan siswa menggunakan campur kode tersebut. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada tiga jenis campur kode yang digunakan oleh siswa bahasa Inggris dalam proses pembelajaran, yaitu campur kode penyisipan, campur kode bergantian, dan leksikalisasi kongruen. Pencampuran kode penyisipan merupakan jenis yang dominan digunakan siswa bahasa Inggris dalam proses pembelajaran, yaitu 14 ucapan termasuk penyisipan kode campur, 3 ucapan termasuk pergantian dan 1 ucapan termasuk leksikalisasi kongruen. Sedangkan alasan siswa menggunakan campur kode dalam proses pembelajaran adalah faktor situasional dan sikap berbahasa.

Abstract

In recent years, integrating digital tools into education has gained momentum, particularly in teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL). This study investigates the effectiveness of Beelinguapp, a bilingual reading application, in enhancing the reading comprehension skills of middle school learners in Indonesia. A quasi-experimental research design was employed, involving 26 middle school students divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group used Beelinguapp over six weeks, while the control group followed traditional reading instruction methods. Results reveal a statistically significant improvement in the achievement of reading comprehension in the experimental group. The study underscores the value of leveraging digital tools such as Beelinguapp in EFL classrooms, offering insights into the pedagogical implications of integrating technology to foster engagement, understanding, and motivation in reading activities.

Abstract

By integrating podcasts into language instruction, educators can create a more engaging, authentic, and accessible environment for practicing speaking skills. The potential of podcasts to improve speaking proficiency lies in their ability to provide consistent auditory input, expand vocabulary, and model accurate pronunciation. This research, therefore, seeks to explore the impact of podcast use on students' speaking achievement at Madrasah Aulia Cendekia. The study aims to provide insights into how podcasts might bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, ultimately fostering a learning experience that better equips students for real-life communicationThis study investigated the effectiveness of using podcast media to improve students'speaking achievement at Madrasah Aliyah Aulia Cendekia Palembang. The study utilized apre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach involving 35 students from grade X as participants. For 10 sessions, the students were exposed to podcast-based learning, where they listened to and practiced speaking through various podcast episodes designed to improve their self-introductions, daily routines, hobbies, and personal experiences in English. Data was collected through pre-test and post-test assessments to measure the improvement of students' speaking ability. The results showed a significant improvement in students' speaking achievement, with post- test scores significantly higher than pre-test scores. The findings suggest that podcasts can be an effective tool in improving students' speaking ability by providing engaging and authentic language practice opportunities. The study recommends integrating podcasts into the English curriculum to encourage better speaking ability among students. Potensi podcast dalam meningkatkan kemahiran berbicara terletak pada kemampuannya untuk memberikan input auditori yang konsisten, memperluas kosakata, dan menjadi model pelafalan yang akurat. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi dampak penggunaan podcast terhadap pencapaian berbicara siswa di Madrasah Aliyah Aulia Cendekia. Studi ini bertujuan untuk memberikan wawasan tentang bagaimana podcast dapat menjembatani kesenjangan antara pengetahuan teoretis dan penerapan praktis, sehingga menciptakan pengalaman belajar yang lebih membekali siswa dalam komunikasi kehidupan nyata. Penelitian ini menyelidiki efektivitas penggunaan media podcast untuk meningkatkan pencapaian berbicara siswa di Madrasah Aliyah Aulia Cendekia Palembang. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain pra-eksperimen dengan pendekatan satu kelompok pretest-posttest yang melibatkan 35 siswa kelas X sebagai partisipan. Selama 10 sesi, siswa diberikan pembelajaran berbasis podcast, di mana mereka mendengarkan dan melatih berbicara melalui berbagai episode podcast yang dirancang untuk meningkatkan kemampuan memperkenalkan diri, rutinitas harian, hobi, dan pengalaman pribadi dalam bahasa Inggris. Data dikumpulkan melalui tes awal (pre-test) dan tes akhir (post-test) untuk mengukur peningkatan kemampuan berbicara siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya peningkatan yang signifikan dalam pencapaian berbicara siswa, dengan skor post-test yang jauh lebih tinggi dibandingkan skor pre-test. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa podcast dapat menjadi alat yang efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa dengan menyediakan kesempatan latihan bahasa yang menarik dan autentik. Penelitian ini merekomendasikan integrasi podcast ke dalam kurikulum bahasa Inggris untuk mendorong peningkatan kemampuan berbicara siswa.
