Abstract

This article discusses the function of language in the Rangga Ngindi Dewa ritual speech in the Tana Righu community, West Sumba. Referring to the concept of language function according to Roman Jakobson, the results obtained regarding the language function implied in the Rangga Ngindi Dewa ritual speech are as follows: (1) phatic function is related to how to open and close communication with ancestral spirits; (2) emotional function related to expressing thoughts and feelings to the God and ancestral spirits; (3) the conative function is related to how to understand the responses of invisible participants; (4) and the poetic function is related to the element of aestetic in the use of language. These language functions constitute the entire linguistic structure of the Rangga Ngindi Dewa ritual speech which emphasizes transcendental communication.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify and describe the cultural practice of conceptualisation of Sumba people in interpreting Nukku Zara in the ritual speech of Pangadi Nga'a Pabenudi We'e Marapu. The research method used is qualitative research with an ethnographic approach. The collection techniques were observation, interview, and document study. Data analysis begins with data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that the Sumbanese conceptualisation of the existence of Marapu and Nuku Zara is always placed in the realm of the existence of the divine creating the universe and the life of all creatures. The role of Nuku Zara in the Social and Religious Structure plays a central role as a divine entity that is the main purpose of all forms of respect and rituals. The symbolism in the Pangadi Nga'a Pabenudi We'e Marapu Ritual is Betel nut and areca nut in Sumba culture symbolise the unity of communication between humans and ancestral spirits and the Gods, in addition, rice and water symbolise life and fertility. The shift in meaning in the contemporary context due to the pressure of advancing modernisation causes most of the local wisdom with noble values in it to be increasingly degraded and eroded in meaning and the lack of awareness of the younger generation to maintain and preserve local wisdom.

Abstract

This study was motivated by an awareness of the meaning and value of local wisdom contained in the Marapu Wano ritual speech, as the true essence of culture is beginning to fade and the younger generation has little knowledge of how to preserve their cultural roots amid technological developments. The purpose of this study is to identify and describe the cultural practices and meanings of Marapu Wano ritual speech in the context of the culture that underlies it. The research method used was descriptive qualitative research. The results of the study show that the Marapu Wano ritual speech contains ecological meanings that reflect the harmonious relationship between humans and nature, religious meanings that affirm the belief system in ancestral spirits and the Creator, social meanings that strengthen solidarity and social order in the community, and meanings of supplication expressed through ritual prayers as a means of conveying hopes for safety, fertility, and prosperity in life. Thus, the Marapu Wano ritual speech can be understood as a cultural value system that plays an important role in maintaining the ecological, spiritual, and social balance of the Tana Righu community in West Sumba.

Abstract

This study aims to understand the construction of meaning and cultural practices of the Sumbanese people through the legend of the origin of rice, using an ethnographic approach. Grounded in ethnographic theory, particularly Clifford Geertz’s view of culture as a system of interpreted meanings, this research explores how the people of Sumba interpret the origin of rice as part of their symbolic structure and life rituals. The methods employed include participant observation, in-depth interviews with traditional elders, and documentation of oral traditions related to the legend. The findings reveal that the legend of the origin of rice contains a comprehensive ethnographic structure encompassing the eight components acronymized as SPEAKING: S (Setting and Scene), P (Participants), E (Ends; purposes and goals), A (Act Sequences), K (Key; tone or spirit of the act), I (Instrumentalities), N (Norms of interaction and interpretation), and G (Genres). Through the ethnographic lens, this legend is understood as a cultural instrument that reflects collective identity and strengthens social cohesion within the community. It is hoped that this study contributes to the preservation of intangible cultural heritage and enriches the field of cultural literary studies.

Abstract

The Hulla Poddu ritual is a sacred practice of the people of West Sumba that represents the relationship between humans, nature, and ancestors within the Marapu belief system. This study aims to uncover the semantic structure of icons, indices, and symbols in this ritual through Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic approach. A descriptive qualitative method was applied using triadic analysis. The results of the study indicate that icons are manifested in offerings of agricultural products such as corn, rice, sweet potatoes, betel, and areca nuts, as well as ritual attributes including water, kitchen ash, coconut shells, star-shaped woven coconut leaves, and ritual movements such as pounding rice or swinging a machete. Indexes are identified through the sounds of gongs and drums as the ritual’s opening markers, the blood of sacrificial animals chickens, pigs, buffalo, and horses customary prohibitions, and the smoke from burning offerings, which signify a causal connection with ancestors. Symbols are constructed through the kataga incantations recited by the Rato Marapu, sacrificial animals, traditional black attire, and the Hulla Poddu as the “sacred month,” which establishes a performative collective sacredness. These findings affirm the ritual as a living, contextual cosmological sign system, offering a theoretical contribution to the understanding of the semiotics of agrarian rituals in Eastern Indonesia.

The research method used is a qualitative descriptive method with an ethnographic approach. Data collection techniques include observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies. Data analysis techniques include data reduction, categorization and coding, contextual analysis, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study show that lexically, Pangara Ana is not chosen randomly, but has a special meaning related to the hopes of the family, history, circumstances of birth, or characteristics desired by the Wewewa community. In contextual terms, names serve as a vital form of symbolic communication, reflecting their perspectives on life, the environment, and the spiritual realm. In religious terms, names carry meaning and power, and by involving ancestors in the naming process, the child is spiritually recognized as part of the tribe or kabissu

Abstract

This study aims to construct the values of the Pancasila in the Pasola tradition as a representation of the local wisdom of the Sumba community. The study used a qualitative approach with a critical ethnographic method, conducted in the Kodi region of Sumba Barat Daya. Data dikumpulkan melalui observasi partisipatif, wawancara mendalam, dan studi dokumentasi, dan dianalisis dengan model Miles, Huberman, dan Saldaña, dengan menggunakan analisis tematik dan konstruksi sosial. The results of the study show that Pasola contains religious values, social solidarity, leadership, conflict resolution, and a balance between humans and nature, which are rooted in the Marapu belief system. Pasola also represents the five principles of the Indonesian national philosophy, Pancasila: Ketuhanan (religiousness), Kemanusiaan (humanity), Persatuan (unity), Kerakyatan (democracy), and Keadilan Sosial (social justice). The process of constructing these values takes place through the stages of externalisation, objectification, and internalisation in the lives of the community. This study confirms that the values of the Pancasila are deeply rooted in local traditions and shows the potential of Pasola as a source of contextual learning in the teaching of the Pancasila based on ethnopedagogy to strengthen the character and cultural identity of students
