Abstract

Since a syllabus is an essential teaching tool, it should contain relevant content and a well-organized curriculum based on practical skills needed at the workplace. Proficiency in spoken English can unlock a wealth of international career prospects. Despite the Higher Education Commission's efforts to improve the educational landscape, elevated levels of joblessness are hampering advancement. The primary goal of this qualitative study was to examine the functional English-speaking course outline at the BS level in private and public Pakistani universities. English language course outlines (communication and presentation skills) were collected from various private and public universities that were conveniently available to the researcher. Data from employed graduates was collected through purposive sampling techniques. Additionally, data was collected from 10 recently employed graduates through a questionnaire to explore the job needs of BS English language students in Pakistan. As the research was qualitative, data was collected using a purposive sampling technique. For reliability, the research questionnaire was validated by three subject matter experts. The syllabi need to be presented more coherently and meet most of the ideal syllabus's requirements. The English language speaking course outlines were found to focus on grammar and give little attention to speaking skills required for the workplace. The study recommends creating an efficient speaking skills-based English language course outline at the BS level for both HEC and university authorities based on the survey data collected from recently employed graduates.

Abstract

This study explores the core themes of friendship, family, and love in the South Korean television drama Reply 1988. As part of the acclaimed “Reply” series, Reply 1988 revisits the late 1980s in a Seoul neighbourhood, presenting deeply personal and social dynamics through the everyday lives of five families. The objective of this research is to analyse how the drama portrays emotional and cultural values, especially emphasizing the interplay between communal living, generational understanding, and interpersonal affection. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this study employs content analysis by observing narrative structures, character development, and key dialogues within the 20-episode series. Through close reading and thematic categorization, the study identifies motifs such as sacrifice, loyalty, unspoken affection, and the warmth of familial bonds. The analysis reveals that Reply 1988 effectively humanizes historical nostalgia, portraying the 1980s as a period of sincere social interaction and collective identity. The theme of friendship is illuminated through the enduring bond among the neighbourhood’s children, while family dynamics are shown through intergenerational respect and emotional dependence. Romantic love, subtle and often secondary, highlights the slow, realistic evolution of relationships. In conclusion, Reply 1988 transcends conventional melodrama by offering viewers a textured representation of Korean society through universal emotions. It serves not only as entertainment but also as cultural reflection, resonating with audiences globally through its sincere depiction of everyday life and timeless values.

Abstract

This study investigates how English subtitle translation shapes cross‑cultural understanding, interpretation, and aesthetic appreciation of the Indian film Chennai Express. Drawing on audio-visual translation theory, especially work on defamiliarization, cultural adaptation, and multimodality, the research examines how subtitles mediate linguistic humour, regional dialects, and culturally loaded references for international audiences. A mixed qualitative design combines multimodal discourse analysis of selected scenes with viewer response questionnaires modelled on cross‑national reception and comprehension studies of subtitled film. Analysis focuses on translation strategies (literal, free, hybrid; domestication vs. foreignization), timing, and stylistic choices, and how these interact with visual and auditory cues to construct meaning and emotion. Findings are expected to show that while subtitles generally secure narrative comprehension across cultures, they also defamiliarize the viewing experience and selectively dilute or reframe culture‑specific humour, social hierarchies, and regional identities. The conclusion argues that high‑quality, culturally sensitive subtitling is crucial for preserving the film’s comic energy and postcolonial cultural textures while enabling global accessibility and intercultural dialogue.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of summarizing and paraphrasing techniques in enhancing reading skills, particularly focusing on developing critical reading abilities. The research employs a mixed-methods approach involving a quasi-experimental design complemented by qualitative analysis. Participants included high school students divided into experimental and control groups; the experimental group received targeted instruction in summarizing and paraphrasing strategies within the context of critical reading exercises. Data were collected through pre- and post-tests assessing reading comprehension and critical thinking, alongside observation and interviews to gain insights into students’ engagement and strategy application. The analysis revealed that students trained in summarizing and paraphrasing demonstrated significant improvement in identifying main ideas, synthesizing information, and evaluating textual arguments compared to the control group. Qualitative findings underscored enhanced metacognitive awareness and deeper engagement with texts when students actively practiced these strategies. The results support the hypothesis that integrating summarizing and paraphrasing into critical reading instruction promotes not only comprehension but also analytical skills essential for academic success. In conclusion, this study highlights the pedagogical value of explicit instruction in summarizing and paraphrasing to cultivate critical reading competencies. It recommends incorporating these strategies systematically in reading curricula to foster higher-order thinking and empower students to become independent, reflective readers.
