Abstract

Enola Holmes 2, a film set in the Victorian era, portrays these inequalities through its female characters who face an environment full of gender-based restrictions. This article focuses on three main characters—Enola Holmes, Sarah Chapman, and Mira Troy—analyzing how their experiences reflect various aspects of gender inequality that have persisted over time. This study analyzes gender inequality in Jack Thorne’s Enola Holmes 2 through the lens of Fakih’s theory, which identifies five manifestations of gender inequality: stereotypes, subordination, marginalization, violence, and double workload. The research applies feminist literary criticism, focusing on the socio-economic conditions and experiences of women, while also linking the findings to the reality of women in the Victorian era. Using a qualitative method, the study examines the dialogues and interactions of the three female characters in the film—Enola Holmes, Sarah Chapman, and Mira Troy—as representations of women who experience gender inequality. From the analysis, 16 instances of gender inequality were identified, illustrating the challenges faced by women during both the Victorian era and in the context of the film’s narrative. These findings reveal how gender inequality persists and is reflected in the experiences of the female characters, highlighting its continued relevance in both historical and modern contexts.

This research intends to analyze the impact of internal and external conflicts on the main character in "The Yellow Wallpaper" and to understand how these conflicts shape the character's psychological state and overall narrative development throughout the story. This research employed the qualitative method and structuralism approach in discovering internal and external conflicts showed by the character in "The Yellow Wallpaper". The data for this research is a short story with the title “The Yellow Wallpaper”, written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Through the exploration of internal conflicts, such as the main character’sstruggle with her own desires and perceptions, and external conflicts, including her interactions with her husband and societal expectations, it becomes evident that these conflicts profoundly impact the main character's psyche and overall well-being. By examining the interplay between internal and external conflicts, this research sheds light on the complex dynamics at play within the narrative and underscores the significance of understanding how conflicts, both internal and external, can profoundly impact an individual's mental situation and welfare.

Abstract

This present work aimed to determine the process of transforming one’s identity from a man to a woman when one must overcome obstacles in a real-life condition depicted in the film The Danish Girl. It is based on Freud’s theory about the human psychological level, with the addition of Queer Theory in completing this research. This descriptive qualitative research obtained data source from the biographical film The Danish Girl directed by Tom Hopper, released in 2015. The subject studied is limited on the main character analysis, who later became Transgender and changed his name to Lili Elbe. In this case, this research focuses on changing the character of a man to a woman in a film and also the limitation used to examine this study is to pay attention to the psychological point of view by using and applying two theories as an approach to reviewing this research. Thus, based on the data, it was discovered there were 39 scenes of Einar transforming into transgender, of which 27 scenes represented ID, 7 represented EGO and 5 scenes were SUPEREGO. The objective of  this study are expected to enrich issues related to the development of the human psyche. The researcher hoped that the result of this study also could enrich the next researcher’s knowledge about the psychological problem, especially about The Transformation of the Characters Einar Wegener to Transgender Women. In conclusion, Einar's transformation does not necessarily affect what is inside of him, but everything proceeds according to the time before he becomes a Transgender. The research opens up avenues for further exploration and analysis in the field of transgender studies, gender identity, and psychological development. It encourages future researchers to delve deeper into the topic and conduct more comprehensive studies on the representation of transgender individuals in various media forms.

Abstract

This research examines the representation of postfeminist values in the 2014 animated film Tinker Bell and the Pirate Fairy. The objective is to explore how the film’s dialogues portray postfeminist values through the characters and narrative. Using a descriptive qualitative method and feminist literary criticism, the study applies the postfeminist theoretical framework proposed by Rosalind Gill. The analysis focuses on five key values: empowerment, individualism and choice, redefinition of gender roles, collaboration and solidarity, and resistance to patriarchal structures. The findings reveal that the film presents female characters, especially Zarina and Tinker Bell, as intelligent, independent, and emotionally expressive figures who challenge traditional gender norms. However, the representation of empowerment remains tied to neoliberal ideals, where success is achieved through personal effort rather than structural change. This research contributes to feminist media analysis and offers insight into how children’s animated films embed ideological messages about gender and identity.

Abstract

Song lyrics as a form of artistic expression that is full of meaning are often used as a tool to convey deep messages that are close to human life. One of the famous rock bands, Bon Jovi is known for its inspiring and meaningful song lyrics. The author's interest in the meanings contained in Bon Jovi's song lyrics, especially in the songs "It's My Life," "Have a Nice Day," and "We Weren't Born to Follow", prompted this study. This research aims to determine the meaning of Bon Jovi's song lyrics by describing the signifiers and signified contained therein. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with a Saussure semiotic approach. This study uses Saussure's Semiotic theory, which identifies the signifiers and signified in the lyrics, followed by syntagmatic and paradigmatic analysis to understand the relationship between sentences and reveal the deeper meaning of the song. Rhyme analysis is also used to strengthen the interpretation of the overall meaning of the song. The results of the study show that the three songs have a central theme of individual freedom and rejection of external control. The lyrics emphasize the importance of following one's desires and not letting others control one's life. Never give up on facing the challenges in our lives and continue to struggle to achieve our dreams without being influenced by others.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the use of ego defense mechanisms by characters in three short stories by Stephen King in the book “Bazaar of Bad Dreams”, namely Premium Harmony, A Death, and Bad Little Kid, using Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory that focuses on ego defense mechanisms. The study uses a qualitative descriptive method with a psychoanalytic approach. Data were collected through short story selection, reading and recording, and coding, then were analyzed through data classification, data analysis, description of analysis results, conclusions of analysis results, and reporting of research results. The results show that the characters in the three short stories display various ego defense mechanisms in dealing with conflict and stress, including denial, reaction formation, projection, displacement, rationalization, and repression. The analysis reveals the complex psychological dynamics of each character and how internal and external factors influence their ego defense mechanisms. It also compares their applications in the context of Indonesian society. Ego dominance is seen in the character’s attempts to balance id drives, superego demands, and reality through different ego defense mechanisms.
