Abstract

Practicum activities cannot be separated from science learning. However, in online learning, this is not easy to do. Therefore, this community service activity aims to train the ability of science teachers to use PhET Interactive Simulations as a practical tool in learning science in the era of learning from home (BDR) due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The subjects were the science teachers of MTs/ junior high school in Sleman Regency Special Distric of Yogyakarta. This activity was carried out virtually using video conferencing and e-learning media, and was attended by 27 participants. Generally, the stages of the program include preparation, implementation and evaluation. Evaluation data were collected using questionnaires and product assessment sheets and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results shows that the trainees are able to use PhET Interactive Simulations in conducting science lab work virtually. It can be seen from the increase in knowledge about the basics of PhET, the ability to download and install PhET, operate PhET, and compile worksheets to apply PhET.The results hopefully help science teacher in improving science learning quality in study from home program.

Abstract

Currently, science learning often uses conventional teaching materials that are less relevant to students' cultural context, thus affecting their involvement in the learning process. In addition, although the PBL model is known to be effective in training critical thinking skills, its implementation in science learning is still limited, especially those that integrate local wisdom as part of the learning content. This research aims to analyze the effect of using electronic LKPD based on the local potential of dome houses with the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model to improve students' critical thinking skills in science learning. This research uses a pre-experimental method with a one group pretest-posttest design. The research sample consisted of 48 class VIII students who were determined through random sampling. Data was collected through tests, with analysis using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The research found that the use of electronic LKPD based on the local potential of dome houses with the PBL model in science learning was significantly able to improve critical thinking skills, with significance values reaching the high category. All indicators of critical thinking skills experienced an increase in value in this study. Based on these results, learning using electronic LKPD based on local potential with a PBL model can be one of the recommended strategies in science learning. The implications of this research are This research provides guidance in design and use E-Worksheet based on local wisdom with models Problem-Based Learning (PBL) to improve students' critical thinking skills.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of biodiesel production practice in enhancing the creative thinking skills of eighth-grade students at junior high school in Sleman in the renewable energy topic. The research employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. The sample consisted of 25 students selected purposively from one class. The instrument used was a creative thinking skills test covering indicators of flexibility, fluency, originality, elaboration, and sensitivity to problems. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Shapiro-Wilk normality test, n-Gain calculation, and effect size measurement. The results showed an improvement in students’ creative thinking skills with a medium category n-Gain and a very large effect size (1.84), along with a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores (p < 0.05). The biodiesel production practice proved effective in developing students’ creativity. This study provides important implications for developing practical-based learning methods that are relevant to environmental and renewable energy issues.

Abstract

This study aims to assess and improve students' critical thinking skills in science education, specifically focusing on the human respiratory system. The research was conducted with grade VIII students at SMPN 31 Bulukumba, using a set of 10 multiple-choice questions developed based on the critical thinking skill indicators outlined by Facione (2020), including interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, and explanation. The results show that students' critical thinking skills were generally in the moderate category, with the highest scores in the evaluation indicator and the lowest scores in the interpretation and inference indicators. The study suggests that the use of Problem-Based Learning (PBL), supported by video-based learning, inquiry-based methods, and tools like Canva, can significantly enhance students' critical thinking abilities. Additionally, the integration of visual aids such as 3D animations can help students better understand complex concepts. The study emphasizes the importance of selecting effective teaching strategies that foster higher-order thinking skills and improve students' performance in interpreting, analyzing, and explaining scientific concepts. These strategies can enhance students' critical thinking skills, equipping them for the challenges of the 21st century.
