Abstract

Student academic achievement is one of the main indicators used to assess the quality of education. One of the reasons for the low student learning outcomes currently is the lack of student concentration during the learning process. Concentration is the initial aspect of processing information. As for improving learning achievement, students should increase their concentration during the learning process. Acupressure is a therapeutic modality that has been proven to have the function of improving an individual's cognitive abilities. Many studies have found that acupuncture points, which can also be used for acupressure, have the effect of improving cognitive abilities. On this basis, researchers conducted a study related to the effect of health education on students' level of knowledge about acupressure to increase concentration in students at SMKN 1 Tembuku. Respondents were asked to fill out pre-test and post-test questionnaires before and after counseling to measure changes in knowledge. The results showed a significant increase in knowledge scores before and after the extension activities. Knowledge scores about acupressure increased from before (Md = 5.00) to (Md = 9.50) after counseling with a p-value < 0.01. This is also supported by the attitudes of respondents where the majority of respondents stated that they would apply this technique to increase study concentration. Participants' knowledge regarding acupressure to improve concentration have increased after receiving health education. Increasing the knowledge of respondents regarding acupressure techniques is a very good thing. This is because the acupressure technique has a number of benefits in increasing brain development and stimulating the secretion of neurotransmitters and hormones which are important for increasing student concentration. The acupressure technique is easy to use and has no side effects and can be applied by participants independently. Therefore, increasing knowledge of acupressure is very beneficial for school students, especially for those who often experience decreased concentration in studying.

Abstract

Compared with biomedicine held by medical experts, perspectives on acupuncture may impact how the general populace uses acupuncture. Therefore, research on the opinions of medical professionals regarding acupuncture therapy is crucial. This cross-sectional study was conducted from July to September 2022 using a questionnaire. The study participants are doctors and nurses from three clinics in Bali province who had at least one year of working experience and were willing to be research respondents. Descriptive analysis and multiple logistic regression are used to determine the participants' perceptions and predictors of their perception. Of 155 participants, the majority (64%) have a positive perception of acupuncture compared with biomedicine. Participants with prior acupuncture usage were 9.01 times more likely than those without previous acupuncture use to have positive perceptions of acupuncture compared to biomedicine (Adj OR=9.01; 95% CI; p=0.001). The results of this study show that acupuncture is seen positively by health practitioners as an effective modality, has few side effects, and is supported by science. Health practitioners' perceptions are affected by their prior acupuncture experience. It is crucial to understand how medical professionals feel about acupuncture. Medical professionals' opinion impacts every patient's decision to seek therapy because one of their duties as specialists is to offer patients clinical judgment, information, and suggestions.

Abstract

Introduction: The study explores the connection between anemia in adolescent girls and the risk of stunting in their future children. To prevent this, researchers developed the CANTIK program, which combines acupressure techniques and iron supplementation. The aim is to evaluate the program's effectiveness in improving hemoglobin levels and preventing anemia in adolescent girls. Method: A pre-experiment with a one-group pretest-post-test design was conducted to evaluate the effect of acupressure and blood supplement tablets on hemoglobin levels. The study involved 33 second-year adolescent girls from SMAN 3 Denpasar, selected through stratified random sampling from 149. Participants met the criteria of having menstruation and being healthy. Hemoglobin levels were measured before and after the one-month intervention using a hemoglobin meter, with results analyzed using a paired t-test. Result: The average age of participants was 16, with most having a normal BMI (54.40%), not being at risk of chronic energy deficiency (72.70%), and having regular (81.82%) and normal-length periods (93.94%). The study showed a significant increase in hemoglobin levels from pre-intervention (Mean = 11.60, SD = 1.27) to post-intervention (Mean = 12.51, SD = 1.11) with a p-value of 0.001. The mean increase was 0.97, with a 95% confidence interval. Additionally, compliance with blood supplement tablet consumption rose from 0% to 97.0% after one month. Conclusion: Blood supplement tablet consumption and acupressure significantly increased adolescent girls' hemoglobin levels. Applying acupressure as a complementary therapy to increase hemoglobin levels is highly recommended.

Abstract

Oxidative stress, which arises from an imbalance between free radicals and the body’s antioxidant defences, is a major factor in the development of degenerative diseases, making the search for natural antioxidants an important area of research. Black goji berry (Lycium ruthenicum) is known to be rich in anthocyanins and polyphenols, while Chinese jujube (Ziziphus jujuba) contains high levels of vitamin C, flavonoids, and polysaccharides; both have been traditionally used in herbal medicine and are considered promising natural antioxidants. This research is the first study that examines the synergistic antioxidant effect of black goji berry and Chinese jujube. An experimental laboratory study was conducted with five treatment groups consisting of Chinese jujube (100%); black goji berry (100%); black goji berry 75% : Chinese jujube 25%; black goji berry 25% : Chinese jujube 75%; and black goji berry 50% : Chinese jujube 50%. Infusion samples were analyzed for antioxidant activity, and data were further analyzed statistically using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey’s post hoc test. The results demonstrated significant differences in antioxidant activity among treatments (p < 0.05). Chinese jujube exhibited the weakest activity with an IC50 value of 35,695.24 ppm, while the 50:50 combination of black goji berry and Chinese jujube showed the strongest activity with an IC50 of 1,605.07 ppm. Groups containing black goji berry, either alone or in combination, consistently displayed better radical scavenging activity than Chinese jujube alone. These findings indicate that both black goji berry and Chinese jujube possess antioxidant potential; however, their combination, particularly in equal proportions, enhances this effect, suggesting a synergistic interaction. The results support the potential of these herbal mixtures as a complementary source of antioxidants to mitigate oxidative stress and prevent chronic diseases. They also highlight the value of studying plant combinations rather than single extracts.

Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a health problem commonly experienced by the elderly and is one of the most prevalent conditions in this age group. The effect of acupuncture in lowering blood pressure includes regulating vasoactive substances in the blood vessel endothelium. One of the active substances known to be affected by release and activation through acupuncture is Nitric Oxide (NO). This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of taichong and zusanli points of acupuncture for hypertension patients. Methods: This study employed a one-group pre-test–post-test pre-experimental design involving 40 elderly participants selected through accidental sampling during an elderly exercise program. Acupuncture intervention was performed on the LR3 and ST36 points according to clinical guidelines for 10 minutes per session by certified practitioners, with close monitoring and no reported side effects. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 22, and post-intervention comparisons were conducted using paired samples t-test.  Results: The analysis showed a reduction in mean systolic blood pressure of 10.95 mmHg after the acupuncture intervention (95% CI: 155.53 to 165.87, p-value < 0.01), indicating a statistically significant pre–post difference within the sample. In contrast, the mean diastolic blood pressure decreased by 1.15 mmHg (95% CI: 76.76 to 84.19, p-value > 0.05), suggesting no statistically significant change.  Conclusion: These findings reflect an improvement in systolic, but not diastolic, blood pressure among the participating elderly individuals. Acupuncture shows potential as a supportive therapy in lowering systolic blood pressure in the elderly.
