Abstract

The communication system in pesantren tends to be figurative. Kyai and his family often use figurative patterns to convey criticism and praise to Santri. This study describes the form, type, and function of criticism and praise of kyai and his family to santri. The theory used to explore criticism and praise is a descriptive and socio-pragmatic theory with the ethnographic method of communication. This research is qualitative. The method used in data collection is the participant observation method. The researchers observed conversations between kyai and their families with the santri, especially those involving criticism and praise. We conducted interviews with koai, pesantren families, and santri equipped with recording and note-taking techniques. The collected data was then reduced and classified based on categories. Subsequently, we transcribed the data in orthographic form and translated it into Indonesian. The results showed that there were two categories of speech in the pesantren environment, namely criticism, and praise; (1) The form of criticism of kyai and his family to santri are reprimands, command, satire, advice, and praise; (2) The forms of praise are motivation, praise, and reprimand. In the motivation and praise, speakers always use subtle, figurative, and direct sentences, while in the reprimand, speakers always praise the interlocutor by criticizing a third person.

Abstract

This study highlights the concept of religious moderation as a strategic approach to mitigating conflicts that arise from differing religious viewpoints. The main objective of this research is to identify and explain the politeness strategies in language used by KH. Hasyim Muzadi (KHHM) in addressing national issues, using a socio-pragmatic approach. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method. The data analyzed consists of utterances containing language politeness strategies, with the data sources being speeches and statements made by KHHM that were uploaded to YouTube gontortv. Data collection was conducted by searching various social media platforms, online news sources, and related manuscripts. Once relevant materials were found, the researcher downloaded and watched KHHM's speech videos, then transcribed all utterances containing elements of politeness in language. After gathering the data, the researcher classified and validated the findings based on their relevance to the research questions. The results of the study show that: (1) the concept of religious moderation is effective in reducing the potential for religious conflict in Indonesia; (2) language politeness strategies are proven to be effective in addressing differing viewpoints, particularly between Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah, and in encouraging mutual respect among Muslims; (3) the implementation of these strategies is influenced by several factors, such as the interlocutor’s characteristics, the social situation, the topic of conversation, the purpose of communication, and its impact on social relations; and (4) KHHM’s application of language politeness has a positive impact in fostering humane communication and harmonious social relationships, allowing communities to live together in safety, peace, and harmony.   Abstrak Penelitian ini mengangkat konsep moderasi beragama sebagai pendekatan strategis dalam meredam konflik yang timbul akibat perbedaan perspektif keagamaan. Tujuan utama penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi dan menjelaskan strategi kesantunan berbahasa KH. Hasym Muzadi (KHHM) dalam merespons persoalan-persoalan kebangsaan, dengan menggunakan pendekatan sosio-pragmatik. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif. Data yang dianalisis berupa tuturan yang mengandung strategi kesantunan berbahasa, sedangkan sumber data diperoleh dari pidato dan pernyataan KH. Hasyim Muzadi (KHHM) yang diunggah di platform YouTube gontortv. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menelusuri berbagai media sosial, berita daring, dan naskah terkait. Setelah menemukan materi yang relevan, peneliti mengunduh dan menonton video pidato KHHM, kemudian mencatat seluruh tuturan yang mengandung unsur kesantunan berbahasa. Setelah data terkumpul, peneliti melakukan klasifikasi dan validasi berdasarkan kesesuaiannya dengan rumusan masalah. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) konsep moderasi beragama efektif dalam mereduksi potensi konflik keagamaan di Indonesia; (2) strategi kesantunan berbahasa terbukti ampuh dalam merespons perbedaan pandangan, khususnya antara Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) dan Muhammadiyah (MD), serta mampu mengajak umat Islam untuk saling menghargai perbedaan; (3) penerapan strategi tersebut dipengaruhi oleh beberapa faktor, seperti karakteristik lawan tutur, situasi sosial, topik pembicaraan, tujuan komunikasi, serta dampaknya terhadap relasi sosial; dan (4) penerapan kesantunan berbahasa KHHM berdampak positif dalam membentuk komunikasi yang humanis dan hubungan sosial yang harmonis, sehingga masyarakat dapat hidup berdampingan secara aman, damai, dan tenteram. Abstract

Language behavior in everyday life often involves activities of criticizing and complimenting. This study aims to describe the forms, types, patterns of delivery, and language usage in the criticism and compliments that are accepted and rejected in the pesantren environment. The data for this study consists of sentences, and the sources of the data are the families of the Kiai in the pesantren community. This research is qualitative, using an anthropolinguistic approach and a communication ethnography method. The data collection method used is the simak libat cakap method. The researcher observed the utterances of criticism and compliments occurring among the members of the Kiai family at Pesantren Tapal Kuda, using recording and note-taking techniques. In addition, interviews were conducted with the Kiai, his family, administrators, teachers, and students to obtain more in-depth data. After the data was collected, the researcher transcribed the utterances into orthographic transcription. The data was then analyzed through reduction, classification, verification, and tabulation processes based on its type. The results of the study indicate that first, there is variation in the use of language adjusted to the context; criticism is often delivered with harsh words if intended to insult, while compliments always use polite language. Second, the forms, types, and patterns of delivering criticism and compliments among the Kiai family members include sarcasm, commands, reprimands, insults, accusations, praise, and motivation. The types of language used include Enjek-Iye (E-I) and Engghi-Enten (E-E), with delivery patterns occurring both directly and indirectly. Third, criticism and compliments that are accepted are generally delivered indirectly and use polite language, while criticism and compliments that are rejected tend to use harsh language, either directly or indirectly. These findings provide new insights into how cultural and religious norms influence the delivery and reception of criticism and compliments in the pesantren environment. The implications of this study emphasize the importance of understanding the social and cultural context in managing interpersonal interactions in the pesantren, as well as providing recommendations for educators and pesantren leaders to be more effective in delivering criticism and compliments in accordance with the prevailing norms.
