Abstract

The popularity of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (HPDH) as a novel is almost accentuated in the movie version. However, the fascination of watching the movies may be interrupted by the problems arising from the use of some problematic expressions in the original language, especially idiomatic phrasal verbs (IPVs). This paper undergoes some procedures of the analysis starting from the process of data collection, progressing to selection, filtering, and labeling. It extracts PVs in HPDH (97 in HPDH part one and 70 in part two)using linguistic concepts of PV. Later by limiting the PVs under conventional and characteristics modelling function of idioms, IPVs can be identified and served as the primary data. The final phase of the analysis wants to see how lexical interpretation, relying on Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary 8th Edition (OALD 8thed), and Halidayan contextual variability (field, tenor and mode) help classifying and explaining the meanings of the IPVs. Finally it is expected that this paper can offer appropriate logical and contextual interpretations of the IPVs. This way, by watching the HPDH, learners of English can gain better understanding of the movies and, more importantly, better knowledge of IPVs as inseparable part of their competence of EFL.Keywords: HPDH, IPVs, lexical interpretation, contextual variability, contextual interpretations

Abstract

Kangean is an island that has various traditions, one of which is the engagement tradition. Today, the engagement tradition has undergone a drastic shift, due to the presence of technological media, such as television, cell phones, the internet, and the like. Television, which is basically a medium of entertainment for the wider community, however, for the kangean community, television is one of the causes of social and cultural changes. This study aims to uncover and describe the causes of these changes. This study uses data analysis. Qualitative methods are methods that aim to obtain descriptive data. The data in this study are conversations related to the causes of socio-cultural shifts, the data is transcribed into written texts. The data was collected by interviewing, selecting, describing and verification techniques. Data were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method which is based on Siswantoro's theory. The results of this study indicate that non-educational shows on television such as soap opera films, promiscuty, blue film, tiktok, life style, speaking style and dress patterns are greatly affect the kangean community especially among teenagers. The negative affects for Kangean teenagers are on social life, lifestyle, speaking style, promiscuty, drug addicts, violating customs, traditions and culture. Therefore, policies are needed to limit the scope of globalization to which ones should be implemented and which should be rejected. This requires the role of the government of the kangean community to act through policies that are more directed at socio-cultural considerations.

Abstract

This study aims to obtain an in-depth understanding of error corrections in speaking from learners’ perspectives due to the fact that error corrections are often provided without considering the learners’ point of view. Although the results of the research discussing effectiveness of error corrections in speaking remain unclear, especially in an English as Foreign Language (EFL) setting, they naturally exist particularly in the process of learning and teaching EFL. To examine the EFL learners’ perceptions on corrections in speaking, nine EFL students were interviewed the effect of applying snowball sampling technique. The study meets the characteristics of qualitative research. The focus of the study is spoken error corrections, which naturally exist in an instructed Foreign Language learning situation and the researcher is the key instrument in that the researcher asks questions and interacts with the research subjects. The results of the interviews, which are audio recorded and transcribed, are analyzed to develop a descriptive model that encompasses all cases of the phenomena. The findings reveal that mispronunciation, grammatical errors, and lexical errors are important to be taken into account. DOI: 10.26905/enjourme.v4i2.4274

Abstract

The obstacle in accessing words that have been stored in memory is called the Tip of the Tongue phenomenon (ToT). This study aimed to measure the effectiveness of semantic priming techniques and sub lexicon codes in facilitating the process of accessing the lexicon when the subjects are in ToT state. This research is a qualitative descriptive study where the researcher conducted an experiment with a psycholinguistic analysis approach. The data are in the form of target words, prime words, and the success rate of the subject in recalling words. The data were obtained from the experiments, interviews, and observations involving 8 students at the tertiary level with an age range of 18-22 years. The results showed that the effectiveness rate of semantic priming in the process of accessing the lexicon is 67,6%, onset 8,9%, first syllable 23,5%. In addition, there were also factors that influenced the subjects' success in recalling words, such as age, character and intelligence, subject selective processes, inhibiting words, health and word acquisition processes. To conclude, priming associative semantics was quite effective in helping the subject recall words when the subject in the Tip of the Tongue State.
