Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is focused on the fundamental competencies of students majoring in English and Literature, with the objective of identifying and evaluating their productive language skills and addressing the challenges they encounter in enhancing speaking and writing skills.Quantitative analysis serves as the methodology for this study. The analysis of the data reveals two key findings. Firstly, there exists a diversity of proficiency levels among students, predominantly at the intermediate level. Notably, writing proficiency remains a challenge, with only 53% of students averaging between 1-4 on the scale, indicating a lack of mastery. Similarly, when it comes to writing skills, 60% of students fall within the range of 1 to 4 on the scale. Secondly, challenges stem from various factors, including limited exposure to English outside the classroom, difficulties in grasping cultural context, and a lack of confidence in public speaking. Proposed solutions include the incorporation of interactive learning methodologies, provision of supplementary speaking sessions, and the promotion of cultural sensitivity through diverse activities.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the process and results of the application of the Project Based Learning (PjBL) learning model in improving learning outcomes in the Prose course in the English Language and Literature Department of UIN Alauddin Makassar. This study uses a Research and Development (R&D) approach with stages simplified into three stages: preliminary study, model development, and model evaluation. Data analysis was carried out at each stage. The results of the study indicate that the application of the PjBL model in learning to write short story texts has a positive impact on the learning activities of students and lecturers. There was an increase in students' writing skills in five assessment aspects: paragraph content, paragraph organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics. In phase I, the average student score reached 85 with a sufficient category and 88% completeness. In phase II, there was an increase in the quality of writing skills with an average score of 90 and a good category and the percentage of completeness remained at 88%. These findings indicate that the PjBL model is effective in improving students' short story writing skills, especially through a project-based approach that allows students to be actively and creatively involved in the literature learning process.

Abstract

This study compares the representation of hedonism and the shift in thinking of characters in the films The Tinder Swindler (2022) and The Great Gatsby (2013). This study uses a qualitative descriptive method using the theory of hedonism by Epicurus (341-270 BC) as the basis for analysis. This study found that in The Tinder Swindler, hedonism is used as a tool of manipulation in the digital era, while in The Great Gatsby, hedonism reflects the search for happiness that ends tragically. Simon Leviev's character does not experience a change in thinking, still holding on to his hedonistic life principles even though he is caught, while Jay Gatsby experiences the realization that wealth cannot repeat the past. A comparison of social contexts shows that The Tinder Swindler reflects the culture of imagery on social media, while The Great Gatsby reflects the excesses of capitalism in the Roaring Twenties era. The conclusion of this study emphasizes that excessive hedonism can lead to destruction, both in the modern world and in a historical context. This study reminds us that the search for happiness through material things often ends in emptiness. Thus, this study reveals that not all forms of hedonism lead to true happiness, especially when based on the illusion of wealth and social image

Abstract

The integration of technology in subtitling practices has become increasingly significant, with various tools enhancing the quality and efficiency of audiovisual translation. Among these tools, Aegisub software stands out as a popular choice, particularly among fansub translators, due to its user-friendly interface and rich features. This study aims to explore the implementation of Aegisub in a subtitling course at the English Literature Department of UIN Alauddin, focusing on the experiences of fifth-semester students. Utilizing a qualitative approach, data were collected through classroom observations, interviews, and questionnaires, allowing for a comprehensive analysis of the students' challenges and successes while using the software. The findings reveal that while students effectively applied Aegisub to create subtitles, they encountered both technical and linguistic challenges. Technical issues included timing, typesetting, and codifying, while linguistic difficulties involved diction choices, equivalence, and translation strategies. Despite these challenges, the software's compatibility with various operating systems and its easy-to-follow instructions contributed to increased student motivation and engagement in subtitling tasks. This study highlights the dual nature of Aegisub as a valuable educational tool that not only facilitates learning but also presents challenges that need to be addressed for optimal use in audiovisual translation education
