Abstract

(1) Background: Cervical cancer ranks as the fourth most prevalent cancer globally and in Asia, standing as the second most common in Indonesia. Despite its efficacy, doxorubicin chemotherapy is associated with significant side effects. To mitigate these adverse effects, a promising approach involves combining conventional drugs with curcumin. Both curcumin and doxorubicin have demonstrated cytotoxic effects against cervical cancer (HeLa). This research aims to determine the synergistic effect of the combination of doxorubicin and curcumin on HeLa and safety in normal cells (Vero cells). (2) Methods: This study adopted an experimental design utilizing doxorubicin and curcumin samples with HeLa and Vero cells. The investigation was initiated with cytotoxic and combination tests using the MTT method. The obtained results included IC50 values and combination indices, and the analysis involved a comparative examination of outcomes between HeLa and Vero cells. (3) Results: Cytotoxic tests revealed IC50 values for doxorubicin and curcumin on HeLa cells, measured in 2,17 ± 0,06 and 26,37 ± 2,00 µg/mL, and 17,32 ± 1,99 and 181,88 ± 30,48 µg/mL on Vero cells. Combination test results were represented by combination index .(4) Conclusions: The synergistic effect is observed at the combination of curcumin at a concentration of 9 μg/mL and doxorubicin at a concentration of 0,125 μg/mL, resulting in a combination index of 0,50. These findings suggest a promising avenue for enhancing the therapeutic potential of doxorubicin in cervical cancer treatment while minimizing adverse effects.

Abstract

Mental health problems are still a significant problem throughout the world. Schizophrenia is a form of chronic mental disorder that affects a person's ability to think, behave, manage emotions and interact with other people. Sociodemographic factors in individuals can be one of the risk factors for someone experiencing mental disorders, including schizophrenia. Therefore, knowing the sociodemographic factors of schizophrenia patients can be a way of early detection and preventive measures against the high rate of schizophrenia recurrence. This study aimed to determine the sociodemographic characteristics of schizophrenia patients at Kasihan II Bantul Public Health Center. This research is quantitative research with a descriptive observational research design. Data collection was carried out retrospectively using medical record data from 91 schizophrenia patients at Kasihan II Bantul Public Health Center in 2022. Sociodemographic data was taken and analyzed by presenting the results using frequency and proportion distribution tables. The results of the study showed that the incidence of schizophrenia at Kasihan II Bantul Public Health Center occurred most frequently in the adult age group as many as 79 subjects (86.8%), 57 subjects (62.6%) were males, 37 subjects (48.4%) had secondary education, 65 subjects (71.4%) had jobs, and 51 subjects (56%) were unmarried.

Abstract

Phacoemulsification is a common cataract surgery to improve visual acuity. Postoperative visual outcomes may be influenced by diabetes mellitus (DM). This study aimed to compare visual acuity outcomes after phacoemulsification in cataract patients with and without DM. It used an analytic observational design with a cross-sectional approach, analyzing medical records of 60 cataract patients (30 with DM, 30 without DM) from Klinik Mata dr. Imam (January 2022–September 2023). Inclusion criteria were patients with and without DM who underwent phacoemulsification and had visual acuity results 21 days post-surgery. Patients using antidiabetic drugs or insulin were included, while those with incomplete medical records, glaucoma, corneal opacities, cataract complications, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal detachment, hypertensive retinopathy, or chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis were excluded. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test. Results showed visual acuity in both groups mostly fell within the normal category based on WHO standards (6/6–6/18), with 23 (76.7%) patients in the DM group and 27 (90%) in the non-DM group. Statistical analysis indicated no significant difference in visual acuity between groups (p = 0.150). In conclusion, there is no significant difference in postoperative visual acuity between cataract patients with and without DM undergoing phacoemulsification at Klinik Mata dr. Imam.

Abstract

Common non-communicable disease such as hypertension or diabetes mellitus is often found in elderly. Irregular medical check-up and uncontrolled medicine could lead into complications such as stroke and kidney failure. Elderly is also considered vulnerable and fragile, thus memory disturbance also sometimes occurs. Although these problems are inevitable due to ageing process, many strategies can be applied to prevent to complications. For example, by giving regular check-ups and knowledge transfer through health promotion, as well as early screenings. Thus, the aims for the community service are increasing the elderly’s understanding, forming proactive elderly and providing laboratory screenings. The method used is interactive presentation about non-communicable disease, medical check-ups for blood glucose, uric acid and total cholesterol level, and memory to quality of life assessment for elderly. The target of this service is elderly congregate of Jihad (Pengajian Ahad) Pagi of PCM (Pimpinan Cabang Muhammadiyah) North Banguntapan, Bantul Regency, DIY (Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta). The result of the implementation of the service activity is increasing knowledge and awareness in regards of non-communicable and mental disease in elderly, as well as medical screenings data for next service project.

Abstract

Medical students are particularly susceptible to mental health challenges arising from academic pressure, clinical demands, and social expectations, which contribute to high rates of anxiety, depression, and burnout that jeopardize both well-being and professional performance; consequently, this study aimed to map the global research landscape on medical student mental health by conducting a bibliometric analysis of Scopus-indexed publications from 2013 to 2023 using a systematic search with keywords such as “medical student,” “mental health,” “depression,” “anxiety,” and “burnout,” followed by the extraction of metadata including titles, abstracts, authors, keywords, journals, and institutions, and subsequent analysis with VOS viewer software to visualize publication trends, collaboration networks, and research hotspots; the analysis of 7,126 publications revealed that “depression,” “anxiety,” and “burnout” were the most frequent keywords, identified key global collaborators, and indicated a surge in research activity during the COVID-19 pandemic, ultimately underscoring the increasing attention to mental health issues among medical students and highlighting the need for targeted interventions such as curriculum reform, enhanced mental health support programs, and resilience training to inform future research and guide policylevel strategies.
