Abstract

This paper presents a qualitative analysis of the use of the lexeme 'tayi' in Parambahan Brunei (parambahan) and its symbolic significance in reflecting the Brunei community's beliefs and way of life. As a complex form of Brunei's Malay figurative language, PB encompasses the Malay community's moral values, ethics, and beliefs. The study examines ten verbs containing the lexeme 'tayi' and explores how this element is symbolically utilized to convey negativity, uselessness, worthlesness, or harmful behavior in the society. Findings have shown that not only Parambahan Brunei embodies the cultural nuances, values and worldview of the local community but it also showcases their wisdom in projecting politeness and communication ethics, among others, even in less desirable situations. This also echoes language's relation to the society it serves or reflects, in addition to its role in preserving and promoting cultural heritage. Abstract

The research investigated how translation functions as an object of governance in Brunei Darussalam, guided by the polysystem theory. Translation served as a critical component within the communication framework, affecting domains like education, economy, and information technology. Applying qualitative-descriptive methods, including experiential insights and observational data, the research explored how translation activities were regulated and integrated across government institutions to promote social cohesion, accessibility, and national development. In Brunei, translation was essential for ensuring effective communication in legal, health, and religious contexts. Key government entities, such as the Language and Literature Bureau and the Ministry of Religious Affairs, managed translation units to support these functions. The analysis underscored how translation aligned with the national objectives of Brunei Vision 2035, aiming at a high-quality education, improved quality of life, and a sustainable economy. Results reveal that effective translation practices foster social cohesion, equitable access to public services, and national development. Continuous assessment, technological advancements, and human resource development are crucial for maintaining and enhancing the effectiveness of translation as an object of governance. Brunei’s case sheds light on the transformative potential of translation as a powerful tool for governance and holistic development, fostering cultural preservation and inclusivity. The research significantly contributes to the broader discourse on how effective translation governance can facilitate sustainable national progress and cross-cultural understanding.

Abstract

This study examines the perceptions of students using ChatGPT in the Malay language. To meet the aims, We adopted the theory of technology acceptance model (TAM). The study focuses on system quality, information quality, service quality, user satisfaction, perceived net benefits, and awareness of ethics and plagiarism. Data were collected through a Qualtrics survey. The finding informed that the system quality of ChatGPT achieved a mean score of 3.375, indicating ease of use and flexibility. Information quality received a mean score of 3.27, suggesting accuracy and usefulness. Service quality scored 3.207, reflecting adequate technical support and consistent performance. User satisfaction was remarkably high, with a mean score of 3.334, demonstrating strong confidence and contentment with ChatGPT’s functionality. Perceived net benefits scored 3.337, highlighting language skills and communication efficiency enhancements. Meanwhile, the ethical considerations were moderately addressed, with a mean score of 3.115, indicating a need for improved education on responsible use. The findings suggest that ChatGPT is a valuable tool for the Malay language, with areas for further enhancement in information quality and ethical practices. At the same time, understanding users’ perceptions will also help create between relevant AI resources, inform policies for ethical AI use, and enhance learning experience for Malay learners.

Abstract

The increasing use of artificial intelligence in academic writing has raised concerns about the accuracy and coherence of AI-generated texts, particularly in underrepresented languages like Malay. This study evaluates the performance of ChatGPT in generating Malay academic texts by comparing AI-generated outputs with expert corrected versions, focusing on grammatical errors, structural inconsistencies, and lexical inaccuracies. A comparative analysis was conducted on two datasets: Trained Dataset (TD), where prompts included detailed context, and Untrained Dataset (UTD). ChatGPT-generated texts were reviewed by Malay linguistics and translation experts, who identified and corrected grammatical errors. A quantitative and qualitative analysis assessed error frequency and categorized linguistic challenges. Findings reveal that UTD contained significantly more grammatical errors (87 errors) than TD (18 errors), demonstrating the role of structured prompts in enhancing text quality. Common errors in UTD included incorrect sentence structure (27.59%), omission of names (14.94%), and inappropriate word choices (11.49%). While TD showed improved grammatical accuracy, errors in phrase structure, conjunction usage, and affixation persisted. The study concludes that AI-generated Malay texts lack syntactic stability, requiring expert intervention and model refinement. These findings highlight the need for linguistic adaptation, expanded training datasets and the integration of expert to enhance AI-generated Malay academic writing. Ultimately, this study presents a case study that provides empirical evidence that context-aware prompt engineering and expert-in-the-loop approaches are essential for enhancing the quality of AI outputs, especially in non-English settings. It also advocates for the development of AI models that can capture nuances and linguistic diversity, vital for inclusive education for all.

Abstract

This paper examines the translations of ‘Golden Kamuy Vol. 1’ from Japanese to Bahasa Melayu/Bahasa Indonesia by MT system Google Translate (GT) and online fan-based translating community Komikcast. Given the linguistic and sociocultural differences between the source language (SL) and target language (TL), translating manga demands expertise and a profound understanding of the cultural nuances embedded in the SL, the specific manga genre, and the target audience. This qualitative descriptive study uses Vinay and Darbelnet’s (1958/1995) translation strategies to analyze the translations of ‘Golden Kamuy Vol. 1’ by GT and Komikcast. The study finds that both platforms employ Literal Translation, Borrowing, and Equivalence strategies, with Komikcast additionally using Modulation. GT primarily relies on literary translation, which is consistent with its algorithmic nature and reliance on translation memories. Conversely, Komikcast emphasizes the Equivalence strategy, recognizing the significance of language proficiency and the contextual and cultural insights human translators provide. Findings are discussed in relation to Nida’s equivalence effects, particularly regarding the translated text’s purpose, translators’ knowledge, and cultural differences in SL and TL. This research enhances our understanding of manga translation, as well as the strengths and limitations of machine and human translation, while contributing to the broader discussion on translation studies. While acknowledging the role and potential of machine translation, this research also reinforces the critical role of human translators in bridging linguistic and cultural gaps between Japanese and Indonesian, highlighting the need for translators to possess deep cultural insights and proficiency beyond literal translations for more authentic and contextually accurate renditions.
