Abstract

This literature review critically examines the integration of ethnoscience and technology, highlighting the transformative impact of this amalgamation on the field of social sciences. Ethnoscience, with its focus on understanding the diverse ways in which human communities perceive and interact with their world, and ethnography, a methodology for the immersive study of cultures and social interactions, together provide a robust framework for exploring human cognition, behavior, and societal constructs. The review delves into the key principles of ethnoscience, emphasizing the development and significance of ethnography in anthropological research and the methodological flexibility required to address contemporary challenges. This study further explores the integration of technological innovations such as wearables, digital traces, and information and communication technology (ICT) into ethnographic studies, underscoring the opportunities and challenges presented by the digital era. The paper argues that the incorporation of technology not only expands the methodological toolkit available to researchers but also enhances the depth and breadth of ethnographic insights into socio-economic, policy, and environmental factors influencing technology adoption across various sectors. Despite the methodological, socio-economic, and infrastructural hurdles, the integration offers unprecedented opportunities for understanding complex social phenomena, contributing significantly to policy-making, community development, and technological innovation. This review underscores the necessity of evolving ethnographic practices to keep pace with technological advancements, fostering a deeper and more nuanced understanding of the intricacies of human life in the digital age.

Abstract

Professionalism of educators is crucial for high-quality learning. To this end, the education study program implemented an internship program to provide direct experience for students (prospective teachers) and engage them in the active and ongoing process of teacher identity construction. However, the increased professionalism of prospective English teachers from this programme is still questionable. This study aimed at i) explaining the importance of collaborative teaching (co-teaching), ii) describing the practice of co-teaching between English mentor of Thai schools and Indonesian prospective teachers, and iii) exploring how co-teaching strategy develops teachers’ professionalism. It applies a descriptive qualitative approach, using observation and interviews. The subject of this study involved two English mentors and two prospective teachers who joined the internship program in Thai schools. The research findings revealed that co-teaching is very important and helpful for prospective teachers in developing teacher professionalism. In this case, English mentors and prospective teachers collaborate since planning stage, implementing the lesson plans developed, and evaluating process. As result, the collaborative teachers indicated some improvement on their pedagogical competence, social competence, and also their English competence.

Abstract

The study aims to examine the vowel series in the Ngeno-Ngene dialect of the Sasak language, which is commonly spoken by students at universities in Lombok. More specifically, it investigates the number of vowel series and their impact on the pronunciation of English by these students. Data for this study were collected from students at Universitas Gunung Rinjani in Lombok, Indonesia, representing eleven villages in East Lombok. The study used a qualitative method, which included observation and interviews. The findings revealed a total of 22 vowel series in the Ngeno-Ngene dialect. The study also emphasized how these vowel series influence the pronunciation of English by students. It indicates that students tend to carry over vowel sounds from their native language when pronouncing English words with similar vowel series. This effect is attributed to an unsupportive language environment and a lack of opportunities for speaking practice and listening comprehension.

Abstract

This research investigates the impact of the problem-based learning (PBL) model on enhancing students' critical thinking abilities within civic education in third-grade classes at SDN Srewendari, Malang City. The study aims to assess the influence of the PBL approach on students' proficiency in analyzing facts, articulating reasons and arguments, drawing conclusions, and effectively presenting their findings. Employing a quasi-experimental design with the Nonequivalent Groups Pretest-Posttest Control Group methodology, the research compares the average post-test scores of critical thinking skills between the experimental and control groups through a t-test. The study population comprises third-grade students from SDN Srewendari, Malang City, with the sample consisting of experimental class IIIa and control class IIIb. Data collection involves observation, utilizing rating scale instruments, and assessments comprising test or evaluation questions administered during class sessions. The analysis is conducted descriptively and quantitatively, employing a difference test with a confidence level exceeding 95%. Findings indicate a positive and statistically significant impact of the problem-based learning model on students' critical thinking skills within civic education.

Abstract

The implementation of problem-based learning (PBL) method in the teaching of English at the junior high school level has proven to be beneficial and effective, as evidenced by the research findings. PBL focuses on the learning process itself by incorporating real-world issues and problems that are aligned with the school curriculum. This approach addresses various challenges that may arise during the learning process, such as lack of engagement, learning disabilities, language barriers, limited resources, and teacher-student relationships. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate perception of teachers regarding PBL and traditional method of teaching English at the junior high School level. The research design used was descriptive, and it involved data collection through interviews, as well as analysis. The data were gathered from various English teachers at different Junior High Schools in South Sumatra, with a total of 34 participants. A questionnaire was used to measure perception of teachers regarding both learning methods in teaching. The results showed a dominant preference for PBL as the selected method. Moreover, teachers also acknowledged a significant improvement in the learning outcomes of students. The contributions of PBL were twofold, 1) it promoted active learning by requiring students to take an active role during the learning process, and 2) it developed problem-solving skills by requiring the identification, analysis, and resolution of real-world problems.
