Abstract

This Study examines the implementation of spectrogram and Sonic Visualizer tools in the performance analysis of classical music. Traditional methods of performance feedback often rely on subjective verbal criticism, which can be inconsistent and influenced by personal biases. This study highlights the limitations of these traditional approaches and the challenges posed by reliance on memory. Spectrograms and Sonic Visualizer provide objective, visual feedback that can reveal intricate patterns and details in musical performances not easily discernible through auditory perception alone. These tools offer precise feedback on pitch and timing, which is especially beneficial in educational settings. The study analyzes four key articles: Yasushi Ueda's investigation of tempo rubato in Chopin’s Nocturne Op.15-2, Cook & Leech-Wilkinson's guide to Sonic Visualizer, Garner's thesis on Schubert's Winterreise, and Gardiner and Latartara’s examination of Beethoven's "Hammerklavier" sonata. These studies demonstrate how features such as tempo and dynamic visualization, harmonic analysis, and beat detection aid performers in evaluating rhythmic accuracy, consistency, and interpretative choices. Moreover, the review identifies gaps in existing research, particularly the need for more comprehensive studies on the effectiveness of Sonic Visualizer across different classical instruments and its impact on performers' interpretative skills. The findings suggest that regular use of these tools can enhance performers' decision-making processes, creativity, and overall artistic growth. This study underscores the significant benefits of integrating advanced audio-visual tools into classical music performance analysis, providing a deeper understanding and more accurate assessment of musical interpretations.

Abstract

Abstract

This study addresses a significant gap in Villa-Lobos scholarship: the absence of detailed analytical studies examining how the composer specifically integrated European and Brazilian musical elements in his guitar compositions. While existing research acknowledges Villa-Lobos's cross-cultural synthesis, it rarely extends beyond historical contexts to provide systematic stylistic analysis of individual works. This research conducts a comprehensive stylistic analysis of Villa-Lobos's Gavota-Choro, examining precisely how the composer achieves the integration of European formal structures with Brazilian rhythmic and melodic idioms. The methodology employs multiple analytical approaches, including rhythmic analysis drawing on Sandroni's paradigmatic framework, harmonic analysis, and formal analysis adapted to account for both European and Brazilian structural principles. The analysis reveals Villa-Lobos's sophisticated integration techniques, including layered rhythmic structures, metric transformation, chromatic enhancement of traditional harmonies, and linear bassline construction. These findings contribute significantly to three domains: theoretical musicology, by demonstrating effective analytical approaches to cross-cultural musical synthesis; performance studies, by providing performers with deeper understanding of interpretative implications; and Latin American music scholarship, by illuminating how Villa-Lobos operationalized cultural integration in his compositional practice, establishing a model for national art music that honors both European traditions and indigenous expressions. Keywords: Villa-Lobos, Gavota-Choro, Brazilian classical guitar, cross-cultural musical synthesis, stylistic analysis

Abstract

This study investigates Franz Liszt’s solo piano transcription of Beethoven's "Eroica" Symphony, focusing on the complex technical and interpretative challenges involved in adapting an orchestral work for solo piano. Beethoven's "Eroica" Symphony is widely celebrated for its innovative structure and thematic development, and Liszt's transcription represents an effort to make such orchestral masterpieces accessible to solo pianists while retaining their expressive depth and grandeur. The research employs a comparative musical analysis methodology to explore the balance Liszt achieved between faithfulness to the original orchestration and pianistic feasibility. The study examines technical transcription techniques, such as the adaptation of orchestral textures into pianistic idioms, including imitating orchestral effect, descending octaves, and the mixing of voices to evoke the orchestral richness. Findings indicate that Liszt’s transcription is a transformative recreation rather than a simple reduction, showcasing his creative approach to translating orchestral music for piano. By preserving the formal structure while adapting textural and dynamic elements to suit the piano's capabilities, Liszt’s work exemplifies the delicate balance between fidelity to the original and artistic reinterpretation. This study contributes to the broader field of transcription studies by addressing gaps in the existing literature, particularly regarding the technical and interpretative strategies involved in transcribing orchestral music for a solo instrument.

Abstract

In contrast to the extensive research conducted on piano and violin, there have only been two studies focused on classical guitar that utilize computer-based recordings of performers. This study presents a performance recording of Villa-Lobos' Etude No. 1, focusing on the extraction of expressive elements in musical performances through visual audio analysis. which comparing from six important figures on classical guitar performer. The first phase of investigation involves a thorough examination and quantification of the interpretative variances in tempo and intensity attributes among six distinguished classical guitarists' recordings of Villa Lobos' Etude No. 1, employing computer-based sonic visualizer performance analysis tools. The second phase of investigation involves identifying and documenting the unique stylistic patterns inherent in each guitarist's interpretation of Villa Lobos' Etude No. 1. The data performance recording utilized a sonic visualizer to generate a specific tempo curve. The model and parameters of musical expression developed by structured and un-structured musical expressive timing. The variance in tempo and intensity attributes among six virtuoso classical guitarists' recordings of Villa Lobos' Etude No. 1 reveals notable differences in their musical expressive timing. The finding of this study demonstrates the importance of the literature of music performance is equally true in the form of the literature of musical structure and the literature of music history.
