Abstract

The research focuses on the hidden reason that made Daryl Morey's tweet controversial in America and China. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The primary data are response tweets of Daryl Morey's tweet about the Hong Kong protest and Daryl Morey's initial tweet about the Hong Kong protest. This research also applies a transnational perspective; Fairclough's three-dimensional CDA is used to analyze and answer two research questions: how Morey's tweet about Hong Kong became a political issue between the NBA and China and how this issue affected the NBA. The research finding shows five reasons on how Morey's controversy became a political issue between the NBA and China: There are differences in interpretations of the tweet; where the U.S. interpreted it as freedom of speech and expression, but the Chinese interpreted it as a challenge to their sovereignty. Basketball's popularity in China expanded the escalation of the conflict. Moreover, by using Transnational as perspective and CDA as theory, researcher able to demonstrate how a single tweet can incite a global uproar and become the catalyst for a costly conflict between two superpower nations.

Abstract

This research analyses gender norms and performativity in Louisa May Alcott's Little Women (1868) using Judith Butler's gender performativity theory. Alcott's semi-autobiographical portrayal of the March sisters paints a vivid picture of nineteenth-century American gender norms and their societal ramifications. This study focuses on Jo March and Theodore "Laurie" Lawrence and examines how their refusal to comply with standard gender norms reveals the performativity of gender. Jo, an outspoken and ambitious writer, and Laurie, a sensitive aspiring musician, are both subjected to social pressures to conform to traditional conceptions of femininity and masculinity, resulting in feelings of alienation and misfitting. By examining their problems, the research demonstrates how gender, as defined by societal and cultural assumptions, limits individual expression and imposes conformity. The study uses Butler's framework to show how Alcott's characters adopt gendered behaviors to fulfill society's expectations, emphasizing the tension between uniqueness and societal conventions. The research dives deeper into Alcott's subversion of preconceptions, as seen by Jo's rejection of traditional female roles and Laurie's challenges to masculine standards. Finally, this research emphasizes Little Women's ongoing importance as a critique of gender stereotypes and a reflection on the larger societal assumptions that shape identity. This study reinforces the importance of Alcott's work in conversations about gender performativity and societal expectations by locating it within feminist discourse.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of American culture on Japanese manga, with a focus on Boku no Hero Academia (BNHA). It explores how American superhero tropes, values, and ideologies are incorporated into Japanese media, reflecting broader themes of globalization and cultural hybridization. Using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory, the research analyzes BNHA's visual, narrative, and thematic elements to uncover both denotative and connotative meanings of American influences. The qualitative research approach relies on primary data from the manga, focusing on character designs, dialogue, and institutional structures. Key findings show that characters like All Might, Star and Stripe, Best Jeanist, Present Mic, and Snipe embody American cultural archetypes, such as superhero and cowboy imagery. All Might symbolizes American exceptionalism, while Star and Stripe reflects militaristic ideals. The study reveals how BNHA blends American influences with Japanese storytelling, contributing to global discussions on cultural exchange in popular media and illustrating the hybrid nature of modern narratives. Abstract

This study offers a critical analysis of an AI-generated video, circulated in early 2025, which depicts a fictional plan by former U.S. President Donald Trump to reconstruct Gaza as a hyper-modern, Westernized urban space. Through a postcolonial lens informed by Edward Said’s theory of Orientalism, this research examines how the video functions as a digital artifact that reproduces colonial power dynamics. The analysis reveals that the video—featuring luxury amenities, a monumental Trump statue, and the complete erasure of Palestinian people—constructs the West as a benevolent savior while symbolically eliminating indigenous presence and agency. Specific visual tropes, such as faceless children moving toward a futuristic city, the glorification of Trump as a heroic figure, and scenes of elite leisure, aestheticize systemic oppression and reframe military occupation as benign intervention. By converting trauma into spectacle and domination into development, the video exemplifies how AI-generated content can perpetuate Orientalist ideologies under the guise of satire or innovation. This research concludes that such digital representations are not politically neutral but actively reinforce imperial narratives, marginalize Palestinian voices, and normalize hierarchies of power. It underscores the urgency of critically engaging with emerging media technologies as sites of ideological reproduction in a post-9/11 world marked by enduring Islamophobia and digital Orientalism.

Abstract

This study explores Netflix’s Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story (2022) by using the theories of Intersectionality and Post-National American Studies to understand how racism, class inequality, and institutional failure are shown in the series. The research aims to examine how the show reflects real social problems in American society, especially the unfair treatment of Black, queer, and immigrant communities. The problem addressed in this study is the lack of academic discussion about how true crime stories can reveal deeper issues of social injustice. Using a qualitative method with content analysis, this research analyzes selected episodes and scenes that show how race, class, gender, and citizenship influence the way victims are represented and treated by institutions. The theory of Intersectionality helps explain how different identities overlap to create multiple forms of discrimination, while Post-National Approach provides perspective to criticize the idea of American exceptionalism. The findings show that the series portrays strong examples of racial bias, class prejudice, and neglect from law enforcement, where the voices of Black women and other minorities are often ignored or doubted. The show also reveals how the media tends to sympathize with white perpetrators while minimizing the suffering of minority victims. In conclusion, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is not only a retelling of a true crime case but also a reflection of structural problems in the American justice system, showing how inequality and institutional failure continue to affect vulnerable groups in society.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the strategies of disabled groups to promote inclusive elections in the 2024 regional elections in DIY. Disabled groups tend to receive stigma and are associated with the stereotype of being a second-class society, lacking the same abilities as the majority of the population. Disabled groups, as part of the citizenry, are entitled to equal political rights. This research is a qualitative study with a case study approach. The data collection for this research was conducted through in-depth interviews and literature studies. The research results show that accessibility is still a challenge in realizing inclusive elections. The strategies employed by disabled groups to promote inclusive elections in the 2024 regional elections in DIY include collective actions such as community-based campaigns and socialization, political pressure, and litigation-based advocacy

Abstract

This study investigates the role of blues music in Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler, as a form of cultural resistance against racial oppression during the Jim Crow era. It adopts Tricia Rose’s theory of Cultural Resistance and applies a qualitative interpretive method within the broader framework of Cultural Studies. The analysis focuses on how blues operates beyond its function as background music and instead serves as a narrative and ideological device that shapes meaning and representation. The findings identify three interrelated dimensions. First, blues functions as a medium of political expression that articulates the lived experiences and collective memory of Black communities. Second, the film presents a clear politics of sound and space, particularly in locations such as juke joints, where music becomes a site of negotiation, control, and resistance. These spaces are not neutral; they structure who can speak, perform, and be heard. Third, the narrative highlights an ongoing struggle to reclaim identity and cultural ownership in the face of appropriation and commodification. Blues emerges as both a cultural resource and a contested terrain shaped by unequal power relations. Overall, the study demonstrates that blues in Sinners operates as a hidden transcript, a form of symbolic protection, and a site of cultural contestation. These roles reveal both the resilience and the vulnerability of Black expressive culture under systemic oppression. This research contributes to film studies, sound studies, and cultural studies by emphasizing how material and spatial conditions influence practices of resistance and cultural production.

Abstract

This study examines Macklemore’s 2024 protest song “Hind’s Hall” as a cultural text that articulates transnational solidarity with Palestine amid escalating global attention to the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. While popular music has long functioned as a medium of political expression, scholarly analyses of contemporary Western protest songs addressing this issue remain limited. The research investigates how the song’s lyrics and visuals construct meanings related to resistance, institutional repression, and global activism. Grounded in Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory, particularly the concepts of denotation and connotation, the study employs a qualitative method through close reading of lyrical content and selected scenes from the music video. The findings reveal that denotative elements depict protest actions, state violence, and humanitarian suffering, while connotative meanings expose deeper ideological critiques of colonialism, racial capitalism, media manipulation, and the criminalization of dissent. The song also mobilizes affect and empathy to foster a sense of collective responsibility and transnational unity. This study concludes that “Hind’s Hall” operates not merely as a protest anthem but as a layered cultural artifact that challenges dominant narratives and amplifies marginalized voices. By transforming personal expression into political discourse, the song demonstrates how contemporary music can function as a powerful instrument of global awareness and resistance.
