Abstract

The concerns of antibiotic resistance have increased in recently years, this issue caused by long-term repeated use of antibiotics to treat bacterial illnesses. Lemongrass leaf (Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf) is one of the natural ingredients that can be used as an alternative antibacterial. The study objective is to determine the antibacterial activity of the ethanol extract of 70% cooking leaves against Staphylococcus epidermidis using diffusion methods. In addition, the Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and Minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of extracts were determined using liquid dilution methods. The results of this study show that extract concentrations of 1,000,000 ppm have a barrier zone in the intermediate category when compared with the positive control, that is, clindamycin. Meanwhile, the MIC value obtained is 1250 ppm, while the MBC value is 5000 ppm. The results of statistical analysis showed that there were no significant differences in the inhibition zone diameter formed between the test concentrations.

Abstract

One of the plants had been used as a medicinal plant in Papua is Pometia Pinnata J.R Forst & G. Forst or the Matoa plant. The aim of this study is to determine the antibacterial activity of the active fraction of Matoa seeds against Escherichia coli bacteria. The positive control and negative control used were ciprofloxacin and dimethyl sulfoxide, respectively. 96% ethanol solvent was used to extract the simplicia of Matoa seeds. Fractionation was carried out using n-hexane, ethyl acetate and water as solvents. The Kirby Bauer diffusion method was used in the antibacterial activity assay at concentrations of 100 mg/mL, 200 mg/mL, 300 mg/mL, 400 mg/mL, and 500 mg/mL. Overall, the inhibition zones obtained from the sequential concentrations above were 8.89 mm, 10.18 mm, 10.34 mm, 10.84 mm, and 11.76 mm respectively. Further, data analysis was performed with One Way ANOVA and the results showed significant differences between concentrations. Data analysis was then continued with the post hoc Tukey HSD test and a concentration of 500 mg/mL was concluded as the optimum concentration.

Abstract

Green tea (Camellia sinensis Linn.) is widely consumed in Indonesia, but the dregs which are waste have not been utilized optimally. A previous study revealed that a 96% ethanol extract from green tea dregs produces antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to increase the utilization of green tea dregs in cosmetic products in the form of a peel-off gel mask with an active ingredient of 96% ethanol extract from green tea dregs. The green tea dregs extract was made by the maceration method with 96% ethanol as the solvent. The peel-off gel mask was made in three formulas with different variations in the gel base, namely PVA 10% and HPMC 2%; PVA 8% and HPMC 3%; PVA 5% and HPMC 4%. The peel-off gel mask was produced, then it was evaluated by an organoleptic test, pH test, homogeneity test, spreadability test, and dry time test. The peel-off gel was stored for 10 days at two different temperatures, namely room temperature, and refrigerator temperature. The evaluation result was obtained that all three formulations of the peel-off gel mask met the criteria for good gel. However, after 10 days of storage at both storage temperatures, there was a change in the color of the three formulas. The Formula 3 (PVA 5% and HPMC 4%) stored at refrigerator temperature also showed an increment in dry time result. These results indicate the instability of the peel-off gel mask during storage. The peel-off gel mask formula from green tea dregs meets the requirements of gel preparations.

Abstract

Japanese papaya leaves, known as Chindoscolus aconitifolius, are usually used as a food source. The 96% ethanol extract of Japanese papaya leaves has a high content of phenolic compounds and can potentially act as an antihyperlipidemic agent in the blood. This study aimed to optimize the capsule formula of Japanese papaya leaf ethanol extract. The research was conducted by extracting Japanese papaya leaves using 96% ethanol to obtain dry extract. The extract obtained was known to be hygroscopic so it was necessary to add filler to the formula. The filler used was microcrystalline cellulose PH 102 with maltodextrin which acts as a variation of filler in the formula. The capsule preparation formula consisted of F1 and F2; before being made, the formula preparation was evaluated and the evaluation consisted of powder, preparation, and stability. The results obtained from the flow time test showed that the F1 had a flow time of 7 g/s and F2 of 3,5 g/s. The angle of repose test for F1 was 36.50o and F2  37.95o. The compressibility test value of F1 was 9.4% and F2 was 20%. The value of the disintegration time test for F1 was 6.5 minutes and F2 was 9.25 minutes.
