Referring to the research results, it was found an idea for an design that has a cultural program where visitors and tourists can enjoy the atmosphere of Lingga Village, which is unique to its Karo Culture while learning about this culture. The design of this cultural learning facility will impact the Siwaluh Jabu Traditional House because this traditional house will experience preservation which is expected to lead to an increase in tourist visits to the Desa Budaya Lingga.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the morphological transformation of the traditional Malay kampung in Medan, Indonesia, from the colonial period (1913) to the present day (2024). Using a typo-morphological approach, the research analyzes spatial changes of streets, buildings, and open spaces, revealing how historical, social, and economic dynamics have shaped the kampung’s evolution. The findings indicate that early settlements were structured around the Malay Sultanate called Istana Puri in Kota Matsum III district. This area showed a clear spatial arrangement of Malay traditional settlement. However, post-independence urbanization, migration, and economic shifts led to increasing density, irregular patterns, and the fading of traditional Malay architectural identity. By 2024, commercial activities dominated major roads, while residential areas moved inward, resulting in fragmented spatial patterns. The study highlights the impact of colonial legacies, the 1946 social revolution, and economic growth in shaping Medan’s urban transformation. Understanding these changes provides insights for urban planning strategies that balance modernization with cultural preservation. This research contributes to the discourse on historical urban morphology and the challenges of maintaining cultural identity in evolving cityscapes.

Abstract

Orphanages are responsible child protection institutions that safeguard children's rights and act as substitutes for parents. The problem lies in the proliferation of illegal and unfit orphanages. This study investigates various strategies and approaches used in providing inclusive caregiving environments aimed at creating a place where children feel comfortable. By examining the implementation of the "home" concept in orphanage settings, this journal highlights the importance of improving emotional well-being and meeting the unique needs of each child. The "Home" concept in orphanage design aims to create an environment that resembles a real home for the children residing there. This can be achieved through architectural designs that prioritize functional and ergonomic spaces, the use of warm colors, and adequate lighting. The selection of furniture and interior decorations also plays a crucial role in creating a comfortable and personal atmosphere. By implementing the "home" concept in orphanage design, it is expected that children living there can experience a sense of comfort, warmth, and security similar to being in their own homes. This concept not only creates an optimal environment for the growth and development of children but also fosters strong emotional bonds between children and their surroundings.
