Abstract

This study focuses on exploring school-related factors that affect students' academic performance in public high schools in Kwara State, Nigeria. The main objective of this study is to identify and analyze how classroom management, teacher personality, physical environment, and teacher-student ratio contribute to student learning outcomes. This study uses a quantitative approach with a type of correlational descriptive research. Data was collected through structured questionnaire surveys filled out by teachers and students and in-depth interviews with several principals. Data analysis used descriptive and inferential statistics, including Pearson correlation analysis and multiple regression. The results of the study show that classroom management and teacher-student ratio have a significant influence on students' academic performance. Teachers' personalities were also found to have a positive impact, although not as much as the other two factors. Meanwhile, while important, the physical environment has a relatively minor influence on learning outcomes. These findings suggest that the interaction between these factors overall affects students' academic achievement. The implications of this study emphasize the importance of paying more attention to effective classroom management and determining the optimal teacher-student ratio to improve students' academic performance. In addition, the results of this study can be used as a basis for policymakers and education practitioners to design more effective strategies to improve the quality of education in Nigeria. This research also opens up opportunities for more comprehensive follow-up research in understanding the complexity of factors affecting academic performance in various educational contexts.

Abstract

Nigeria's oil and gas sector, a significant contributor to the country's economy, accounts for 92% of export value and 5.5% of GDP. However, challenges such as supply chain inefficiencies hinder its optimal performance. This study investigates the impact of supply chain management strategies on the performance of Nigerian oil and gas companies. Adopting a mixed-method research design, the study utilized Taro Yamane’s formula to determine a sample size of 100 respondents, employing stratified random sampling to select participants from the upstream, midstream, and downstream operational strata of the oil and gas industry. Data collection was conducted through structured questionnaires and interviews, while data analysis employed descriptive statistics, including frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations. Hypotheses were tested using chi-square statistics to establish relationships and validate findings. The results revealed that the integration of advanced technologies, third-party logistics providers, and effective risk management significantly enhances supply chain performance in the oil and gas sector. The study recommends the adoption of advanced data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain technology, the Internet of Things (IoT), and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems for data-driven decision-making, risk prediction, operational optimization, and demand forecasting. Additionally, oil and gas companies should conduct comprehensive risk assessments, develop robust business continuity plans (BCPs), and implement regular drills and simulations to ensure operational resilience during disruptions. This study contributes to the body of knowledge on supply chain management strategies in the oil and gas sector, particularly within the Nigerian context

Abstract

This study examines the role of entrepreneurial orientation on the performance of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria. The objective was to determine the effect of innovativeness, risk-taking, proactiveness, autonomy and competitive aggressiveness on the performance of SMEs in Nigeria. Using a 21-item questionnaire with a 5-point Likert scale, the authors collected data on entrepreneurial orientation and SMES Performance. Taro Yamani Formula determined the sample size of 222 SME owners, Managers and Workers. Collected data was analysed with the use of a frequency distribution table, and simple percentages and the hypotheses were tested with Chi-Square statistical formula. The study revealed that innovativeness, risk-taking, proactiveness and competitive aggressiveness enhance the performance of SMEs. The practice of autonomy does not enhance SMEs' performance. The research suggests that SME owners and managers should be creative and innovative to adapt to external changes and customer needs. They should take calculated risks, invest in new products and services, conduct competitor analysis, and encourage employee initiatives.

Abstract

The conflict between herdsmen and crop farmers in Nigeria has significantly impacted the productivity of yam farmers in the Logo Local Government Area of Benue State. The study investigated this conflict's impact on yam farmers' productivity. Data was collected from a structured questionnaire administered to 400 households affected by the conflict. The study found that the conflict negatively impacts the productivity of yam farmers in the Logo Local Government Area. The study reveals that 67.3% of yam farmers in Benue State are male, with a mean age of 35. The majority are married, have an average household size of 11 people, and have a small-scale farm size. Their low education level may contribute to unabated conflict dynamics. The study reveals that herdsmen attacks significantly reduce the productivity of yam farmers in the study area, with a higher number of respondents producing more output before the attacks and a lower number after the attacks. The logit regression model shows that Fulani attacks, attacks by Fulani herdsmen, and technology led to significant deaths in households, reducing the labour force, destroying farmers' inputs, and instilling terror. In conclusion, the study reveals that herdsmen attacks have significantly reduced the productivity of yam farmers in the study area, affecting not only the labour force but also their inputs and livelihoods, highlighting the detrimental impact of conflict-related violence. It was recommended that the government should also provide easy access to finance for farmers affected by this conflict to recover their lost farm capital.

Abstract

The debate between nature and nurture is a long-standing and highly deliberated concept in fields ranging from psychology to education. This research therefore sought to determine the effects of nature and nurture on academic performance, learning approaches, behaviours, and educational expectations among students within the context of Ogun State, Nigeria. The study adopted a quantitative research design where data was collected from 240 students and 60 teachers from three local government areas using structured questionnaires. Descriptive statistics, correlation analyses, and independent sample t-tests were used to analyze data. In this context, both direct genetic effects and indirect environmental influences on the investigated educational outcomes were identified. However, the level of using environmental factors including socioeconomic status, family, teaching approaches and resources was higher with significantly more frequency. The correlation analyses and t-tests also corroborated these findings, suggesting a connection between environment and academic performance, learning styles, behavioural patterns and educational achievements. The study adds to the current body of knowledge on the nature-nurture debate within the context of the education system in Nigeria. The findings underscore the role of socioeconomic status in children’s achievement and readiness to learn, emphasizing the need for equal opportunities in education and support for their aspirations. In the same respect, the study emphasizes the importance of a bio-psychosocial model that considers both genetic predeterminations and environmental conditions to explain educational processes and performance.
