Abstract

This research aims to analyze the representation of Batak culture in the film Missing Home by Bene Dion Rajagukguk in relation to interpersonal communication and its impact on the development of tourism in North Sumatra, particularly Bukit Holbung. The method used is a qualitative approach with in-depth analysis of questionnaire data based on audience reviews. The findings indicate that the film successfully portrays the values of custom, interpersonal communication, and the dynamics of Batak families authentically, thereby increasing public interest in visiting the filming locations. Additionally, the increase in tourist visits to Bukit Holbung following the film's screening has a positive impact on the local economy through the development of facilities and products managed by local BUMDES (village-owned enterprises). The implications of this research emphasize the importance of film media as an effective means of promoting culture and tourism, while also encouraging the preservation of traditional values in a modern context. This research is expected to serve as a reference for the development of culture-based tourism and intercultural communication in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between the animated film Jumbo and interpersonal communication and its influence on increasing cinema visits in Indonesia. The Jumbo film raises the themes of friendship, bullying, courage, and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). This is considered capable of building strong emotional resonance with the audience and increasing the audience's visits to the cinema as a place to watch. Through a descriptive qualitative approach with the content analysis method, the researcher examined the visual elements, dialogue, and storyline in the film. The results of the study show that the Jumbo film effectively represents interpersonal communication theory, such as symbolic interactionism and the concept of self-reflection that encourage empathy and shape the audience's self-perception and sociality. In addition, the visualization of the amusement park in the film triggers feelings of nostalgia as a tourism motivation with the support of digital marketing strategies and electronic word of mouth (eWOM) which have an impact on the spike in visits to the cinema. Jumbo is not only an entertainment medium, but also an effective cultural and tourism promotion tool. Thus, Jumbo proves that local animated works can shape cultural narratives and increase tourism motivation.

Abstract

This research discusses interpersonal communication and emotional representation in the film Avengers: Endgame (2019), focusing on how the dynamics between the main characters shape emotional resonance that influences the audience's tourism behavior. The background of this study departs from the phenomenon of film-induced tourism, where the emotional attachment of the audience to fictional characters and locations triggers the desire to visit the actual filming locations of the film. The aim of the research is to identify forms of interpersonal communication in films and to examine their implications for tourist interest in filming locations. With a descriptive qualitative approach and the Stimulus–Organism–Response (S–O–R) model analysis, data were collected through scene observation and media documentation. The results show that verbal and nonverbal communication in the form of expressions of loss, empathy, social support, and sacrifice build a strong emotional bond with the audience. This elicits a tangible response in the form of tourist visits to locations such as Stark Cabin and St Abbs. This research concludes that interpersonal communication in films not only strengthens the narrative but also serves as an affective bridge that shapes the image of the destination. These findings have implications for cinema-based tourism promotion strategies and the use of emotional narratives in the creative industry.
