Abstract

Background:Hemodialysis is a kidney replacement therapy for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) aimed at removing excess fluid and waste products from the bloodstream and extending life expectancy. Although hemodialysis is considered the most effective therapy for increasing the life expectancy of CKD patients, it is associated with several side effects that can impact patients' overall well-being. Objective:This study aims to analyze the quality of life and associated factors among chronic kidney disease patients undergoing hemodialysis therapy. Methods:This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Hemodialysis Unit of Banggai District Hospital, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. The study involved 60 CKD patients aged ≥18 years who were undergoing hemodialysis therapy from April to June 2024. Participants were selected using purposive sampling. Primary data were collected through direct interviews using the Kidney Disease Quality of Life Short Form 36 (KDQoL-SF36) questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and logistic regression analysis. Results:The chi-square test revealed significant associations between age (p = 0.024), gender (p = 0.041), blood pressure (p = 0.036), nutritional status (p = 0.039), hemoglobin levels (p = 0.024), creatinine levels (p = 0.023), and family support (p = 0.003) with the overall quality of life of hemodialysis patients. Logistic regression analysis demonstrated that gender (p = 0.025; OR = 8.739; 95% CI: 1.320–57.872) and blood pressure (p = 0.049; OR = 9.817; 95% CI: 1.012–95.251) were significant predictors of quality of life. Conclusion:Factors such as older age, female gender, hypertension, nutritional imbalances (obesity or malnutrition), anemia, and elevated creatinine levels contribute to a decline in the quality of life of hemodialysis patients. The findings underscore the importance of collaborative efforts by patients, families, nurses, healthcare providers, and the government to enhance therapy adherence, dietary management, and psychological support to improve the quality of life of patients undergoing hemodialysis. Abstract

Abstract

Hypertension is a non-communicable disease with a prevalence that continues to increase every year. The problem that occurs in society is a lack of understanding about self-care management, which causes uncontrolled blood pressure and the risk of lasting complications such as stroke. Education aims to increase knowledge about the benefits and obstacles and self-care management efforts in controlling blood pressure. The community service methods used are health checks, providing modules and brainstorming-based education about self-care management for hypertension patients. The evaluation results obtained were that before education was carried out using the brainstorming method, only 13 participants (37%) had a good level of knowledge about self-care management and this increased to 31 participants (89%). Participants very enthusiastically expressed the opinion that it is very important to check blood pressure every month and change lifestyle and behavior patterns. It is hoped that counseling will be carried out on a scheduled basis so as to increase knowledge and self-care management of hypertension patients.

Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a major modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Community-based programs that combine screening, education, and practical self-management skills are crucial for its prevention and control. Objective: This community service initiative aimed to implement and evaluate such a program in Awu Village. Methods:  The program consisted of three integrated components: (1) blood pressure screening for all participants, (2) educational sessions on non-communicable diseases and hypertension, assessed by pre- and post-tests, and (3) a practical mindfulness training session introducing techniques for stress management. Results: Screening of 45 participants revealed a high prevalence of pre-hypertension (42.2%), indicating a significant risk for progression to clinical hypertension. The educational intervention successfully improved knowledge, with the proportion of participants in the "good" knowledge category increasing from 53% to 76%. During mindfulness practice, participants were observed to be focused and relaxed, successfully engaging with the techniques. Qualitative feedback indicated that participants found the session beneficial for stress relief. Conclusion and Suggestion: This integrated program was effective in identifying cardiovascular risk, improving health literacy, and introducing a practical self-management tool. The high pre-hypertension rate underscores the urgency of such interventions. For sustained impact, it is recommended that the local health post (Posbindu) incorporate brief mindfulness exercises into its regular activities and establish community support groups to foster long-term practice, thereby contributing to the primary prevention of hypertension in Awu Village.
