Abstract

This study investigates the presence of the Qur'an within the agricultural community of Madura. The study of the living Quran encompasses the reception of the Qur'an in the practical context of farming in Madura. This research examines the way in which the Qur'an is experienced and practiced within a specific community, focusing on its performative nature and positioning it under the frame of discursive tradition. The research aims to address two main questions: firstly, what are the many modes of Qur'an performance among the agricultural community in Madura; and secondly, how does the discursive tradition around these performances manifest itself. This study is grounded in a field investigation that gathers data through interviews, observations, and supplementary literature reviews. This article contends that the Qur'an serves as both a prayer and an integral part of the daily life of the farming community in Madura, from the pre-farming stage to harvesting. Additionally, it highlights the pivotal role of the kiai in transmitting Islamic teachings, resulting in the development of traditions that are prevalent among the Madurese community.

Abstract

As an organization that seeks a caliphate government, Hizbut Tahrir has a number of symbols that characterize it. One symbol that is strongly attached to Hizbut Tahrir's identity is the liwa and rayah flag. This flag is often an integral part of various activities and demonstrations carried out by this organization, so that it creates an understanding among the public that the flag with the shahada written in it is the official identity of Hizbut Tahrir. in order to examine the understanding of the community related to the liwa and rayah flags, this research uses a leatherative method with a hypersemiotic approach as proposed by Umberto Eco. Through this approach, this paper aims to understand how hypersemiotic forms are formed in people's thinking related to the symbolism of this flag. although the Hizbut Tahrir group explicitly considers that the liwa and rayah are Islamic flags, the practices of their activities always involve these flags which have created an understanding among the public that the flag is a symbol of Hizbut Tahrir. This phenomenon gives rise to various forms of hypersemiotics, including the recyle sign that reflects the rejection of Hizbut Tahrir in several countries, with the liwa and rayah flags in it. In addition, there is also an extreme sign (superlative sign) that shows how this organization is considered dangerous while the liwa and rayah flags remain a strong symbol of identity for them. Thus, people's understanding and interpretation of the liwa and rayah flags produce various forms of hypersemiotics that reflect the complexity of identity and perceptions of Hizbut Tahrir.

Abstract

This paper aims to explore the integration of traditional and modern Islam in nganggung tradition of Bangka society. Nganggung is a customary practice of bringing food with specific procedures and attributes to commemorate important Islamic holidays. It existed for a long time as a tradition in Bangka conducted by traditionalists. Recently, modernists also participated in the event, making nganggung a melting pot that blends traditionalists and modernists. While associated with traditional Islam, this practice has also involved modern practices. The research was carried out in Kemuja and Kenanga villages on Bangka Island, using interviews, participatory observation, and a literature review. It addresses three key questions: How is local wisdom in the nganggung tradition expressed in contemporary Bangka society? How can this wisdom strengthen ties between traditional and modern Islam? What is the role of maqāṣid asy-syarī’ah in sustaining this wisdom for lasting harmony? Findings show modernists' participation arises from respect for traditional Islam. While nganggung has adapted to include all groups, changes remain minor. It continues to unite society, sustained by Islamic values and maqāṣid asy-syarī’ah.

Abstract

This article exploress sūrah-based thematic interpretation as a distinct method within Qur’anic exegesis, differing from the general thematic interpretation. While the latter compiles scattered verses under one theme, the former focuses on a single sūrah’s internal unity, structure, and message. Based on the work of Sāmir ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Rashwānī, this study explores its definition, historical development, and methodological principles. The genealogy of this approach traces back to classical scholars such as al-Bāqillānī, al-Rāzī, and al-Biqāʿī, and evolves through modern thinkers like al-Farāhī and Sayyid Quṭb. Methodologically, it involves five steps: analyzing the sūrah’s title, context of revelation (asbāb al-nuzūl), textual coherence (munāsabah), structural pillars (ʿamūd), and overall objectives (maqāṣid). Despite interpretive variation, this method offers a coherent framework for engaging the Qur’an’s message thematically; highlighting its relevance in contemporary discourse.

Abstract

Abstract This article constituates a critical review of Mehdi Azaiez’s scholary work, “Sharing Qur’anic Meanings: Outlines for Dialogical Hermeneutic” (2023), proposing a methodological approach to harmonize contemporary trends in Qur’anic studies, particularly within Western scholarship, termed ‘dialogical hermeneutic’. Employing an explanatory-reflective framework, the review engages rigorously with relevant academic sources. It addresses three pivotal questions: firstly, how does Azaiez articulate dialogical hermeneutic and its applications?; secondly, why is the exploration necessary?; and thirdly, what insights emerge from his endeavors? Findings reveal dialogical hermeneutics as a collaborative approach, merging genealogical, anatomical, and anagnostic models in Qur’anic interpretation, fostering dialogue between Western and Islamic scholarly traditions. Azaiez’s application example in interpreting Surah al-Ikhlaṣ. While the conclusions drawn are still partial, the exposition of the method appears organized, making it potentially applicable for researchers in Qur'anic studies. However, it would be better if Azaiez releases new writings to complement its shortcomings. Keywords: Mehdi Azaiez; dialogical hermeneutic; contemporary Qur’anic studies
