Abstract

Oral and dental health training for elementary school students is an important preventive effort to build the habit of maintaining oral and dental hygiene from an early age. This program aims to increase students' knowledge about the importance of dental and oral care and train them in the correct tooth brushing technique. This activity begins with counseling on dental health problems that children often face, such as cavities due to bad habits and high sugar consumption. Furthermore, students are given practical training on how to brush their teeth effectively. The results of the training showed that students were very enthusiastic and were able to understand and practice the correct tooth brushing technique. Question and answer sessions and direct practice strengthened their understanding, while giving prizes increased students' motivation to apply the knowledge they had gained. This training is expected to be the first step in forming a generation that is aware of the importance of oral and dental health.

Abstract

Patient anxiety during tooth extraction is a common challenge in dental practice that can affect patient experience and outcome of the procedure. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of approaches and strategies to address patient anxiety during tooth extraction procedures. Through counseling designed to improve patient understanding of the causes of anxiety, relaxation skills, and communication with the dentist, this study measured its impact on patient anxiety levels and preparedness. The study involved patients undergoing tooth extraction procedures, where they attended a counseling session that included information on factors that cause anxiety, breathing relaxation techniques, and communication skills. Data were collected before and after the counseling through a survey that assessed patient knowledge, ability to apply relaxation techniques, self-confidence, and anxiety levels. The results showed a significant increase in patient understanding of the causes of anxiety from 50% to 85%, ability to apply relaxation techniques from 30% to 75%, and self-confidence in facing the procedure from 40% to 80%. In addition, the ability to communicate with the dentist increased from 45% to 78%, and anxiety levels decreased from 70% to 40%. These findings confirm that an educational approach is effective in reducing patient anxiety, increasing preparedness, and improving the experience during tooth extraction. This strategy can be implemented widely to improve the quality of care and patient well-being in dental practice.

Abstract

The use of augmented reality (AR) technology in educational media is expected to attract children's attention and make lessons more interesting to follow. This is because it can convey dental health content interactively and virtually in three dimensions in real time. To evaluate the effectiveness of the application of Augmented Reality (AR) technology as an educational media model in increasing the knowledge and understanding of elementary school children about dental and oral health, as well as to assess the potential of this technology as an interactive and interesting learning method for children. This research was carried out in November 2023. The population in this study is the total number of students of SD Minasa Upa. The sample was 60 people. The type of research used is a quasi-experimental design with a One Group Pretest-Poster research design. The design of this study aims to find out whether there is an influence on the use of AR technology as a dental health education medium in children. Increasing the knowledge of respondents. The results showed that 13 respondents (92.86%) experienced an increase in knowledge from bad to good, 1 respondent (7.14%) experienced an increase in bad knowledge to adequate, 14 respondents (87.5%) experienced an increase in knowledge less to good, and 2 respondents (12.5%) experienced an increase in knowledge less to adequate. Concept design activities include the selection of themes, namely the system can be used as an object of presentation or delivery of material to children so that the objects made need to pay attention to the selection of colors, shapes, sizes, arrangement of images and interesting materials.

Abstract

Tartar is a common oral health problem among adolescents. Tartar forms from hardened plaque due to a lack of proper and regular brushing habits. If not treated early, this condition can lead to serious disorders such as gingivitis (gum inflammation) and periodontitis (damage to the supporting tissue of the teeth), which impact adolescents' quality of life and self-confidence. Therefore, education about the dangers of tartar and the importance of maintaining oral health is essential, especially in schools. This community service activity aims to increase adolescents' knowledge and awareness of the dangers of tartar and equip them with proper toothbrushing skills. The activity was held on July 5, 2025, at SMP Negeri 1 Manuju, Bilalang Village, Gowa Regency, and was attended by seventh and eighth grade students. The methods used included interactive education, simulations of toothbrushing techniques according to health standards, and the distribution of leaflets as additional information that students can access again. Evaluation was carried out through pre- and post-tests to measure knowledge gains, as well as direct observation of toothbrushing practices. The results of the activity showed a significant increase in students' knowledge scores, namely 31.3 points (from an average of 53.4 to 84.7). Furthermore, 92% of students were able to practice correct toothbrushing techniques. These results indicate that an educational approach combined with simulations and visual media is effective in increasing understanding and changing clean and healthy lifestyle behaviors in adolescents. This activity is expected to become a model for sustainable dental health education in schools and be replicated elsewhere.

Abstract

Oral hygiene in fixed orthodontic patients is a significant challenge because the presence of brackets and archwires easily traps food debris, making it difficult to maintain dental health. A preliminary survey at Deneira Dental Clinic, South Jakarta, found that some patients using fixed orthodontics still have poor dental hygiene, characterized by debris and food residue adhering to the brackets. Interviews also revealed that most patients do not understand proper toothbrushing techniques for maintaining oral health. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between toothbrushing techniques and the oral hygiene status of fixed orthodontic patients at the clinic. Using a cross-sectional design involving 33 respondents through accidental sampling, data were collected using questionnaires and clinical examinations using the OHI-S index, then analyzed using the Chi-square test. The results showed that the majority of respondents using the combination toothbrushing technique had moderate oral hygiene, while in the roll technique group, the number of patients with moderate hygiene was also higher. These findings confirm that the toothbrushing technique used does not fully achieve optimal oral hygiene, although most patients still fall within the moderate category. Therefore, interventions in the form of comprehensive education from clinics regarding proper oral care methods, including the use of additional cleaning aids such as dental floss or mouthwash, are needed. Furthermore, patients are expected to be more consistent in maintaining daily oral hygiene. To strengthen these findings, further research is recommended exploring other factors, such as brushing frequency, toothbrush type, and diet, that may influence oral hygiene in orthodontic patients.
