Abstract

This study explores Abd al-Rauf's influence within the geographic and historical milieu of Aceh, focusing on his contributions during the reign of four sultanas and his role as Qadi Malik al-Adil. It underscores his historical approach to Quranic exegesis and efforts to make Quranic teachings accessible to Malay-speaking audiences. Using a systematic literature review, the study analyzes 21 key documents on Abd al-Rauf's contributions. Documents were selected based on relevance to three themes: geographic and historical context, tafsir methodology, and Quranic translation. Findings reveal that 43% of the literature highlights Abd al-Rauf's historical influence, 19% discusses his tafsir methodology, especially in Turjuman al-Mustafid, and 38% examines his translation of the Quran into Malay using the Jawi script. The study concludes that Abd al-Rauf's contributions have significantly enriched the Islamic intellectual tradition in Southeast Asia, enhancing the region's scholarly and cultural heritage and providing a foundation for ongoing research into Quranic exegesis and Islamic teachings in the Malay world.

Abstract

Abd al-Rauf al-Fanshuri al-Jawi was one of the most influential scholars in the intellectual and religious history of the Malay world, recognized as a Quranic exegete, jurist, and Sufi master. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of his contributions, including his biography, scholarly networks, exegetical methodology, and his role in Islamic law and Sufism. Using a systematic literature review based on documentary analysis, this research examines various academic sources to understand Abd al-Rauf’s intellectual approach and its impact on the development of Islam in the Nusantara. The findings reveal that Abd al-Rauf’s legacy extends beyond Turjuman al-Mustafid, the first complete Quranic exegesis in Malay-Jawi, to the dissemination of Islamic knowledge through his extensive network of scholars and students. His exegetical methodology integrates textual and contextual approaches, with an emphasis on tauhid, Sufism, and Islamic law, fostering a balanced and contextualized interpretation of Islam within the socio-cultural framework of the Malay world. The findings highlight the need for further research on Malay-Jawi exegesis and comparative studies with other interpretative traditions in the broader Islamic world.

Abstract

This article focuses on outlining the moral messages behind the various forms of interpersonal communication in the Quran. This is motivated by the current phenomenon in which communication has been dominated by technological advancements and social media that offer convenience. While communication through social media brings great benefits to life, it is still unable to fully represent a persons feelings and emotions. Talking or discussing through social media has now shifted face-to-face communication. Face-to-face communication has become something unfamiliar and missed by some people. Therefore, this article aims to highlight once again the urgency of interpersonal or face-to-face communication in accordance with the guidance of the Quran. Based on an exploration of the Quranic verses regarding interpersonal communication, six themes are recorded in the Quran. These themes reflect a variety of communication contexts, providing guidance for interacting in every situation and with every interlocutor. This study uses a thematic method to explore the meanings of conversations recorded in the Quran.
