Abstract

This research examines the exploitation of epistemic modality markers in political discourse. This research inspects modal auxiliaries and semi-modals use in four speeches addressed by Obama at the annual United Nations General Assembly during his second period as a President of America. Applying both qualitative and quantitative methods, this research is in an attempt to accomplish the whole investigation dealing with explorative and quantification of epistemic modality in Obama’s political discourse. The data were taken from Obama’s speeches from 2013 to 2016 at the United Nations General Assembly. The findings demonstrate that 471 modality markers were found in Obama’s speeches and he frequently delivered epistemic probability with 189 cases or 40.2% modal auxiliaries and semi-modals. Epistemic certainty and possibility were found in 125 cases or 26.6% and in 157 cases or 33.2%. The highest degree of epistemic modality, epistemic certainty, is expressed by employing must, have to, need to, cannot, could not, and may not. Modal should, will, would, be going to, and ought to express epistemic probability and modal can, could, may, might, and be able to are exploited to express the lowest degree of epistemic modality, epistemic possibility. The higher epistemic modality markers involved in a proposition indicate the higher confidence of evaluation and judgment asserted based on the speaker’s knowledge, belief, and evidence. In contrast, the lower epistemic modality markers found indicate lower confidence in the evaluation and judgment of the proposition.

Abstract

The primary goal of this research is to find the lingual forms and meanings of the language in vehicle stickers used as promotional media to increase ecotourism possibilities throughout the Mangroves Ecotourism area of Bangkalan by means of illocutionary speech acts. In this research, the descriptive and qualitative research methods were used. The data for this research came from a form of vehicle sticker that was first investigated to promote Mangrove Ecotourism in Bangkalan, Madura. The following Mangrove Ecotourism sites were included in this research: Labuhan Mangrove Education Park Bangkalan, Mangrove Martajasah, and Mangrove Tajungan, Kamal. The research carried out adopted George Yule's pragmatic theory and J.R Searle's illocutionary speech act as the theoretical framework, which provides a good explanation of the representative speech act, directive speech act, expressive speech act, commissive speech act, and declarative speech act. Then, concluded that directive speech act plays a major form of this research’s finding and discussion and representative speech act as the second form whose type is commonly used in the sticker as promotional media.

Abstract

This study applies deconstruction, a key theory in postcolonial studies, to analyze and reinterpret the meaning within Tiara Andini's popular Indonesian song, Maafkan Aku. By examining both the literal meaning and its deconstruction, the research aims to uncover hidden layers of meaning in the song's lyrics. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data from the lyrics are analyzed through textual analysis and the concept of deconstruction. The analysis first identifies binary oppositions in the lyrics and then challenges these oppositions to reveal new interpretations. Findings highlight the contrast between themes of penitence (as the song’s explicit meaning) and expectation (as its underlying meaning). The lyrics deconstruct the notion of penitence as a "victim" with an opposing sense of expectation as a "villain." This study offers a nuanced exploration of how deconstruction unveils alternative interpretations, contributing to a broader understanding of how popular culture uses language to express complex emotional and relational dynamics.

Abstract

Bangkalan Regency’s stunting rate in 2023 is the highest stunting case compared to the other regencies in Madura. This community service aims to reduce the number of stunting cases both as a preventive measure and for handling stunting in Bangkalan Regency, particularly in Jaddih Village. Applying the training method, this program seeks to increase knowledge about stunting and also skills in making healthy and nutritious processed foods or Complementary Foods for toddlers (MPASI). The result of this community service is that integrated health service post or Posyandu in Jaddih Village are able to produce several MPASI processed foods such as pudding made from sweet corn and tuna fish tofu porridge. The process of producing MPASI processed is an implementation of the insight, knowledge and skills obtained during this program. The outcome of this activity is a concrete step in attempting to overcome the stunting case in Jaddih Village as one of the stunting loci in Bangkalan Regency.

Abstract

Research on Madurese folklore is of high urgency in preserving local culture amid the rapid pace of globalization. Globalization often leads to cultural homogenization, threatening the relevance of oral traditions such as folklore. Revitalizing Madurese folklore is a strategic step to keep cultural values alive and known to a wider audience. The proposed effort is to integrate folklore into the Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) program. The main objective of this research is to develop the “Careta Madhura” learning media that utilizes folklore as culture-based teaching materials. The method used is development research with the 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate). The research stages included identifying material needs, designing media concepts, developing modules and interactive digital content, and limited dissemination. The product's feasibility was assessed by BIPA experts and Madurese cultural experts, then tested on beginner-level BIPA learners using data collection techniques such as questionnaires, observation, and interviews. The novelty of this research lies in its contextual role-play approach, which allows learners to experience cultural values directly, unlike conventional learning methods that tend to emphasize grammar. The results of the study show that “Careta Madhura” is feasible and effective, both as an innovative medium to enrich BIPA materials and as a sustainable strategy for introducing Madurese cultural heritage to the global arena.
