Abstract

The negative influence of globalization in Indonesia has led to moral values decrease of generation Z. Therefore, character-based education is needed to improve the character of generation Z. One of the local arts that have high moral values is Besutan. Besutan art is a native art from Jombang which is the pioneer of Ludruk. Besutan art is an art that contains moral values that can improve generation Z. However, along with the times, Besutan art has decreased in its existence. Based on the problems that occurred, this study aims to determine the values of Besutan art in building the character of Generation Z and understand the importance of implementing BESFEST as a revitalization of Besutan art. The research method used is qualitative through literature studies from journal articles, trusted websites and interviews conducted online and offline. From the results of the literature study and interviews, it was found that generation Z experienced the decrease in moral values due to the influence of globalization. Another finding is that Besutan art has decreased in existence due to the lack of Besutan art performances in regional events and the change in art from Besutan to Ludruk. BESFEST can become a revitalization medium and become a government policy regarding Besutan arts as well as efforts to improve the character of Generation Z.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze The New York Times’s role in representing the #MeToo movement from 2017 to 2023. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach with a Corpus-Based Critical Discourse Analysis (CBCDA) framework using Fairclough’s (2013) theory. The data were collected from 108 The New York Times articles containing the keyword “#MeToo” and compiled into a corpus using AntConc 3.4.4w. The analysis involved interpreting verbs and adjectives of collocation and concordance, followed by discourse practice and socio-cultural practice analysis. The findings reveal that the collocation of “#MeToo” is associated with verbs and adjectives that carry both positive and negative connotations. At the discourse practice level, The New York Times tends to portray women in the context of power inequality. Furthermore, the socio-cultural practice analysis indicates that the #MeToo movement reflects broader economic, political, and cultural dimensions. Overall, the results show that The New York Times embeds its ideology in representing the #MeToo movement. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that The New York Times not only reports on the #MeToo movement but actively participates in shaping its public meaning.

Abstract

This study examines the linguistic landscape of GWalk, Surabaya, Indonesia, a region characterized by a rich history of cultural diversity and high multilingualism, particularly in the high-end culinary area, which incorporates influences from Chinese, Javanese, European, and Indonesian cultures. The research collected 201 samples from GWalk using photographs as the primary data source. The analysis reveals multiple dimensions that define the linguistic landscape of high-end culinary spaces. Public signs within the area can be categorized into monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual, reflecting the distribution of languages in the GWalk linguistic landscape. The sociolinguistic aspects of the site highlight the prominence of English as a global language alongside Indonesian. Despite its high-end setting, Indonesian remains the dominant language, coexisting with Chinese, which signifies the dominant ethnic identity in GWalk Citraland, and English represents global connectivity. This interaction among languages offers a promising direction for further research. From an ethnolinguistic perspective, the local language, Javanese, is minimally represented in the linguistic landscape despite efforts to incorporate it through various forms of language modification. These findings underscore the complex dynamics of language use in a socio-culturally diverse and economically stratified urban environment.

Abstract

The film Anne Boleyn (2021) recounts the historical narrative focusing on the tragic final years of Anne Boleyn, the Queen of England, from 1533 to 1536. However, controversy arose due to the inclusion of several black actors in roles deemed inconsistent with an accurate representation of a medieval-themed film portraying a non-fictional historical figure. This research aims to unveil the deconstruction strategies applied to historical facts in the 'Anne Boleyn' (2021). Data were gathered from literature and the film, and the analysis employed Derrida's textual deconstruction theory. The findings reveal film presents a narrative of deconstruction primarily through the practice of blackwashing, by casting a Black actress to portray the historically White figure of Anne Boleyn. This illustrates deconstructive elements characterized by fluidity in describing characters in an attempt to reinterpret history and expand interpretations of the past. Moreover, this narrative is not devoid of efforts to enhance the visibility of black representation in the film industry, particularly within Hollywood cinema.
