Abstract

This observation report examines the effectiveness of English test items used in Class 7A at SMP Negeri 4 Pematangsiantar. The study evaluates the tests based on key principles of language assessment, including validity, reliability, practicality, authenticity, and washback. Data were collected through direct observation during the administration of multiple-choice and essay tests, which assessed students’ skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Quantitative analysis was conducted using SPSS 24 to measure the reliability and validity of the test items. Findings indicate that the multiple-choice tests demonstrated high reliability, while essay tests showed moderate consistency, suggesting a need for improved scoring rubrics. The test was found to be practical and authentic, with a positive washback effect on student motivation and learning outcomes. Recommendations are provided to enhance future test design to ensure alignment with curriculum goals and students’ real-world language use.

Abstract

This study aims to improve the speaking skills of fifth-grade students at SD Negeri 091608 Sinaksak through the implementation of the Grammar-Translation Method (GTM). The main problem faced by the students was their low ability to speak English, especially in constructing simple sentences and expressing them confidently. The subjects of the study were 19 fifth-grade students. The instruments used included observation sheets, speaking tests, and documentation of teaching activities. The results showed that the use of GTM helped students better understand sentence structure through simple translation exercises from Indonesian to English. This positively impacted their speaking abilities. In conclusion, the Grammar-Translation Method can be considered an effective alternative teaching strategy to enhance English speaking skills among elementary school students.

Abstract

This study aims to improve the English vocabulary mastery of fifth-grade students at SD Negeri 091608 Sinaksak through the application of the Silent Way method using Cuisenaire Rods. The main problem faced by the students was their limited vocabulary and lack of confidence in using it actively. The subjects of the study were 20 fifth-grade students. The instruments used included vocabulary tests, observation sheets, documentation of the learning process, and teaching media in the form of Cuisenaire Rods to support the implementation of the Silent Way method. The results showed that the Silent Way method with the help of Cuisenaire Rods was quite helpful in enabling students to recognize and remember the vocabulary taught. However, the effectiveness of this method was hindered by the minimal verbal interaction during the learning process, as the teacher relied solely on gestures and visual aids without much spoken explanation. This caused confusion among several students in understanding the context of vocabulary usage. Therefore, the Silent Way method is not fully effective for vocabulary instruction at the elementary school level without adequate verbal support and adjustments.
