Abstract

English plays a vital role as a global language and an essential skill for academic and professional success. Among the four language skills, writing is the most challenging for Indonesian EFL learners, particularly in descriptive text production, due to limited vocabulary, grammatical difficulties, and lack of exposure to authentic English use. Traditional teaching methods often fail to provide adequate engagement and creativity, resulting in students’ low writing performance. To address these issues, this study investigated the effect of applying the Cooperative Learning method of the learning together model integrated with cartoon picture media from Pinterest on students’ descriptive writing ability at SMP Negeri 1 Siantar. The research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. The population consisted of 237 eighth-grade students, from which class VIII-4 was selected as the experimental group and class VIII-5 as the control group. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests, and analyzed using mean, standard deviation, normality, homogeneity, and independent sample t-test. The results revealed a significant improvement in the experimental class, with the mean post-test score increasing from 39 to 80, compared to the control class which only rose from 46 to 59.2. The t-test result (7.722) exceeded the t-table value (1.677) at the 0.05 significance level, confirming that the treatment had a positive effect. It can be concluded that the integration of Cooperative Learning with cartoon picture media from Pinterest is effective in enhancing students’ descriptive writing ability. This method not only improved writing scores but also fostered greater motivation and active participation in the classroom.

Abstract

Reading skills are essential for high school students, particularly in grasping information efficiently. However, there remains a gap between theory and practice regarding students’ effective reading methods. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the skimming technique in improving reading fluency, speed, and main idea identification skills among grade 11 students at SMA Negeri 5 Pematangsiantar. Using a quantitative quasi-experimental design, this research involved three randomly selected classes. Data collection utilized reading tests focusing on three key aspects: fluency, main idea identification, and reading speed. Results showed significant improvements across these areas following the application of skimming techniques, as evidenced by higher average post-test scores. This suggests that skimming effectively enhances students’ reading performance by enabling quicker comprehension and main idea recognition. In conclusion, the skimming technique proves beneficial for developing essential reading skills, supporting both academic progress and efficient information processing for students in high school.

Abstract

This research explores the integration of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) as a pedagogical approach for enhancing descriptive writing skills about athletes among Grade X students at SMKS-1 Tamansiswa. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative methodology through a case research framework, data were gathered via classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and the analysis of students’ written compositions. The results demonstrate that PjBL was executed in a well-organized manner, following clearly defined project stages that fostered a student-centered learning environment. Students demonstrated active engagement in research and writing processes, which contributed significantly to their development in essential writing components such as content, vocabulary, grammar, and organization. The choice of authentic, interest-based topics served to boost motivation and participation, while effective teacher facilitation and peer feedback further supported students’ writing progress. Despite encountering some challenges related to information accessibility, the overall outcomes indicate a positive impact on students’ descriptive writing abilities. This research concludes that PjBL serves as a highly effective teaching strategy for cultivating descriptive writing skills within EFL vocational education settings.

Abstract

This research aims to describe in-depth the dialectical process of professional identity formation among pre-service teachers through multidimensional involvement in partner schools. Teaching practicum (PPL) is often narrowly perceived as a mere instructional exercise; however, field realities reveal a complex and systemic multidimensional involvement. Utilizing a qualitative method with a narrative inquiry approach, this study explores the subjective experiences of a student teacher at SMP Negeri 12 Pematangsiantar. Data were collected through participant observation, practicum reports, and narrative reflections compiled over a twelve-week period. The results indicate that the student undergoes a process of "becoming a teacher" through a dialectic between the pedagogical idealism of the university and the structural pragmatism of the school. Involvement extending beyond classroom boundaries—encompassing character internalization, administrative management, and learning resource organization—functions as an authentic laboratory for constructing professional identity. The study concludes that multi-tasking demands are not merely technical obstacles but transformative instruments that mature the self-efficacy and ethical commitment of future educators. The implications of this research emphasize the importance of repositioning teaching practicum programs as dynamic spaces for identity negotiation in facing the complexities of the educational ecosystem.

Abstract

Speaking anxiety is one of the major affective barriers that hinder students’ oral performance in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. This study aims to investigate the levels, forms, and contributing factors of speaking anxiety among Grade XI students at SMAN 3 Pematangsiantar. Using a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design, data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and classroom observations. The findings reveal that students experience a high level of speaking anxiety influenced by five interrelated factors: psychological, linguistic, pedagogical, sociocultural, and environmental. Psychological factors such as fear of making mistakes, low self-confidence, and fear of negative evaluation emerged as the most dominant contributors. Linguistic limitations, particularly vocabulary shortages, pronunciation difficulties, and grammatical concerns, also increased students’ hesitation to speak. Pedagogical aspects, including teacher correction styles, unclear task instructions, and difficult speaking tasks, further intensified anxiety. Sociocultural influences, such as peer judgment and cultural norms of silence, shaped students’ reluctance to speak, while environmental conditions like large class sizes and limited speaking opportunities outside the classroom exacerbated the problem. The study concludes that speaking anxiety is a complex and multidimensional issue requiring comprehensive support from teachers and institutions. Creating a more supportive, communicative, and low-anxiety classroom environment is essential for improving students’ speaking confidence and fluency.
