Abstract

This study seeks to understand the impact of the tourism crisis due to the Covid-19 pandemic in the Kaliurang Tourism Area and the emerging vulnerabilities for tourism actors who make tourism their sole livelihood. To understand these conditions, pre-eliminary research was carried out as part of a series of research on tourism and COVID-19. This research was conducted by using qualitative methods from April to October 2021. The results of this pre-eliminary research clearly show that tourism actors in Kaliurang are experiencing a slump due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tourism, which is the main source of living, is in fact very vulnerable to a prolonged crisis. The impacts and risks that arise in Kaliurang are clearly seen in the economic and socio-cultural sectors. As an effort to survive the tourism actors in Kaliurang are trying to respond to this condition individually and in groups. However, the responses that arise are not only positive but also negative, such as friction and conflict.

Abstract

The process of recovering when experiencing disasters and crises is often considered an individualised process. The Covid-19 pandemic in the past two years has had a major impact on various sectors of the world, and the most affected is tourism. Many studies on pandemic conditions and tourism have been conducted with a focus on the impact of the pandemic. For this reason, it is necessary to look back at the resilience process carried out by tourism actors and the tourism community in dealing with the pandemic. Yogyakarta, especially Kaliurang, is the most affected area due to the pandemic. This study attempts to invite a revisit of tourism resilience in Kaliurang. Ethnography is used to capture the resilience efforts made by the community and tourism actors in Kaliurang. The research shows a change in community structure and agency development at the individual and group levels. Both structure and agency simultaneously help the process of community resilience, which is then developed into resilience in the tourism sector.

Abstract

Developing agritourism is a useful strategy to enhance the value of the local agriculture industry. Agritourism utilises agricultural products and activities to attract tourists to rural areas. As an early stage of agritourism development, land conversion has become a supporter of attempts to create agritourism attractions. The notion of locality exists to distinguish and identify the tourism attraction area. This research focuses on durian agritourism in Padukuhan Pranan, Banjaroya Village, Kalibawang, Kulon Progo Regency, Special Region of Jogjakarta. Special attention is made to the dynamics of the local actors. Data collection was carried out using ethnographic methods through observation and in-depth interviews, for approximately three months (July-September 2023). The informants in this research were several actors involved in the development and management of Kampung Durian Pranan agritourism. The study discovered that converting the property to agritourism benefited Padukuhan Pranan by establishing the Kepranan durian as a symbol of local identity. With its central emphasis on the local populace, the Pranan Durian Village Festival serves as an outstanding instance of the substantial contributions made by community members. The collaborative efforts of local actors to effect positive change are exemplified through the festival’s design and execution, which are built upon their roles as initiators, motivators, and educators. However, it is worth noting that the reestablishment of a sustainable family farm as a means to regenerate agritourism’s sustainability has yet to transpire due to the continued dearth of interest among the younger generation in agritourism. Hence, agritourism planning needs to be designed by organising activities involving the younger generation and rebuilding family farms to create resilience and sustainability.

Abstract

Abstract

Community-based tourism management precariously depends on a robust community, especially in tourist villages. Establishing an organizational framework characterized by effective coordination and well-defined member relationships strengthens the community and defines each individual's role and responsibility. To enhance the efficiency of the established structure, this study aims to investigate the function of the arts and cultural community within Pancoh Ecotourism Village and ascertain its capacity for further development as a Cultural Village. This study utilises a community development framework (Community Development Foundation, 2011) comprising six principles—common goals, cooperation, strengths and independence, equity and inclusiveness, participation, and community empowerment. Community representatives, village officials, tourism actors, and workers of Pancoh Ecotourism Village participated in a series of focus group discussions (FGD). Consequently, the inhabitants of Pancoh Ecotourism Village successfully established an organisational framework that catered to their requirements and unambiguously delineated every individual's specific duties and obligations. In addition, actors, tourism managers, and arts and culture community members can solicit diverse opportunities and curate cultural tour packages that feature renowned artistic and cultural attractions and products.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study explores women's participation in managing community-based tourism in Pancoh Ecotourism Village. Strengthening women’s roles as innovators, leaders, and decision-makers is crucial for tourism recovery post-pandemic. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions (FGD) with 35 participants, including tourism actors, business managers, youth communities, women activists, and academics. Over 12 months, interviews, FGDs, and seminars were conducted to assess the level of female involvement in tourism management. The findings reveal that although women actively participate in tourism activities, only a few hold leadership positions or serve as decision-makers.Women's participation is categorized into two main groups:older women who manage accommodations (homestays) and younger women involved in guiding tours. Socio-cultural values, particularly the perception that women are primarily responsible for domestic duties, limit their involvement in higher-level management. This research highlights the need for more inclusive tourism planning that involves women and youth in leadership roles, contributing to a more equitable development of tourism.ABSTRAKPenelitian ini mengeksplorasi partisipasi perempuan dalam pengelolaan pariwisata di Desa Ekowisata Pancoh.

Abstract

Breast cancer is still one of the leading causes of death in Indonesia. The multifactorial causes of breast cancer, including heredity, carries a risk for the sufferers’ relatives. Vigilance in female relatives of breast cancer patients increases due to hereditary risk factors for having the same disease. This anthropological study aimed to reveal the mosaic of breast cancer patients’ female relatives’ knowledge of such a risk and their efforts to prevent it. Qualitative data collection through interviews was conducted with 13 female family members of breast cancer patients in Yogyakarta aged 17-65 years. The data analysis was done through an emic approach by examining the informants’ views on the situation and their solutions. All of the informants believed that breast cancer is a malignant and deadly disease if it is not detected early and not properly treated. They were all fully aware of their risk as a family member to have the same disease. Their preventive measures included medical (early examination, breast self-examination, laboratory check, or consultation with the doctor) and non-medical (changes in eating and drinking behavior, reducing stress, exercising, and wearing masks). Besides, they also made religious efforts by praying to God to be given a healthy life and for the patients to be healed and their offspring to be free from this disease.

Abstract

The massive development of tourism in the Kaliurang area of Yogyakarta over several decades has had a significant impact on environmental changes, both physical and non-physical. One of the impacts felt as a result of the massive tourism activities in the Kaliurang area is waste. The waste produced by tourists from various tourist activities in the Kaliurang area every day is voluminous, in addition to the waste produced by the local community. Unfortunately, tourism operators leave waste management and handling to the village government, which has a limited management system. This situation has persisted for years, leading to waste accumulation. In 2025, the local government, together with BUMKal, attempted to address the existing waste crisis by establishing a Waste Management House (RPS) with a digital system. This governance requires multi-actor cooperation (government, tourism operators, and local communities) to overcome the waste crisis through cross-actor collaboration. The responses that emerge from the interaction of these three actors can be categorised into four types, namely structural responses, socio-cultural responses, technological and innovative responses, and economic responses. The formalisation of waste institutions is not only a solution to poor waste management systems but also a new, more systematic governance model for environmental and socio-cultural welfare for multiple actors in the Kaliurang tourism area.
