Abstract

This study aims to examine the religious development of Muslim children through their opinions about religion as well as their experience. It is intended to explore their understanding of some religious concepts and the factors influencing their understanding. The main participants of this study are six children in one of the religious private modernist schools in Yogyakarta from the first until the sixth grades (their ages are around 7-12 year old). The researcher expects that the children religious concept develops in accordance with the cognitive development theory. Moreover, since all participants are Muslim, it is expected that there is a different nuance from the previous research which particularly discusses the concept of God. If social environment takes an account of children religious concept, the researcher expects to find out which aspect is more dominant: the aspect of family or the aspect of the school. The results showed that the children’s religious concept grows as something inseparable from the rest of the children’s development, from concrete to more abstract knowledge, from simple to more complicated view. The social environment, particularly religious instruction at school, plays a central role in the children’s religious concept. KeywordsChildren, Religious concept, Cognitive development, Islamic school

Abstract

This paper aims to discuss the influence of Muhammadiyah in shifting the meaning of Yaa Qowiyyu ritual or Apeman in Jatinom, Klaten. The discussion focuses on examining the role of the dominant group in establishing the mainstream culture in the area. Upon its arrival, Muhammadiyah has established a strong existence in the village and has changed the beliefs of Jatinom residents about the ritual although they still keep the Yaa Qowiyuu existence. Consequently, changes are made in the ritual. The practice is no longer called ‘ritual’ as its term or meaning. Instead, Apeman has turned into a festival. Moreover, the residents’ belief in receiving blessing from the traditional rice flour cake called apem has already gone. Through the ethnographic method, this research shows the ways Muhammadiyah shifted the Jatinom society’s religious perspectives and the critical implications of the efforts to the ritual itself. This paper elaborates the aforementioned problems to observe whether Muhammadiyah did the subtle shifting to the local culture through state power. Using Foucault’s theory about power and knowledge, this research observes the existence of cooperation between Muhammadiyah as the local organization and the state in modifying the ritual and its meaning into the festival. The symbols signifying the cooperation can be seen in this festival. Such cooperation shows that the nationalization and Muhammadiyahization, the process of a society’s shift towards Muhammadiyah, run simultaneously in Jatinom village. Keywords:Ritual, Apeman, and State power

Abstract

This study aimed at revealing the needs of Egyptian people after the 2011 revolution and how they could meet their needs amidst increasingly difficult economic conditions. This was literary study by analyzing Arabic literary works. It used Abraham Harold Maslow's humanistic psychology theory which holds that human needs are described in a hierarchy. To meet the needs at the top level, the needs at the previous level must first be satisfied. In the context of Egyptian society, they have freedom of expression as the highest hierarchical need of self-actualization. This becomes very interesting when told in the material object of research: people have freedom of expression but they still feel hungry and insecure, the most basic need for humans. The results showed that after the fall of Husni Mubarak, Egypt underwent a change in the political field that the Egyptian people get freedom of expression as citizens. Unfortunately, the progress of democracy was not followed by the progress of other fields such as social and economic fields. After leadership change in 2011, life was increasingly difficult with rising prices for basic necessities and Egyptian society was increasingly difficult to find work. This made them far from a decent life such as owning a house, vehicle or marriage.

Abstract

This study examines the differences in how domestic and international tourists perceived the image of Yogyakarta as a tourist destination. This survey-based quantitative research used online-questionnaire to collect data from the domestic and international tourists who have visited Yogyakarta. Using a non-probability convenience sampling method, 304 useable questionnaire responses were collected through any social media network. The image of Yogyakarta as a tourist destination in this study consists of four parts: top of mind image, destination visual image selection, cognitive and affective evaluation. To test the different perspectives about cognitive and affective components of an image between domestic and international tourists, a non-parametric Mann-Whitney u-test was performed. The result shows that there is a significant difference in cognitive evaluation about an image of Yogyakarta as a destination nevertheless, no significant difference was found in the affective evaluation. The differences also appeared in the part of visual image selection whereas domestic tourists mostly choose Malioboro as the best picture to describe Yogyakarta while international tourists choose a Temple more than others. At the top-of-mind, international tourists mentioned Borobudur as a part of heritage sites and history frequently while most domestic tourists mentioned art and culture, shopping, and culinary. Furthermore, a methodological issue and practical implication are also discussed.

Abstract

The development of New Yogyakarta International Airport is expected to increase the number of inbound tourists. The inbound tourists will bring their cultures into contact with the local culture. A contact between global and local cultures has potential to cause cultural shock and change of values to the local community. Consequently, the local community needs to be aware of the adverse effect of cultural contact, such as the vulnerability of the local values and identity to the hegemony of global culture and identity. Multiculturalism with proper understanding may reduce the adversity the local community faces and in the long run strengthen their local identity and values. Cultivating multicultural understanding can be initiated at the grassroot level among youth by means of exposure to cases of cultural contact. Community engagement program applying simulation is a better model to to build multicultural competence among youth since it brings a closer-to-reality contact situation that stimulates sensible responses to cultural contact.===================================================================Pembangunan New Yogyakarta International Airport diharapkan akan meningkatkan jumlah kunjungan wisatawan mancanegara ke Yogyakarta dan daerah-daerah sekitarnya.

Abstract

AbstractThe rapid development of technology triggers  attitudes and behaviors of consumerism. The two things have a cause and effect relationship that cause multiple pressures on the environment in the form of resource exploitation to support innovation, and waste from innovation products of short use duration to meet consumer desires. Therefore, it is necessary to be aware of consumerism behavior that is triggered by the innovation of various technology products and their impact on the environment. With this awareness, it is expected that the community can develop a wise and environmentally friendly lifestyle as an effort to reduce the rate of exploitation of natural resources and increase the uncontrolled waste of technological innovation products. The interdisciplinary approach by combining cultural sciences and psychology provides a formulation of conceptual and practical solutions to environmental problems due to consumerism that is increasingly rampant both in urban and rural areas. This interdisciplinary approach applied in the community service program for the labor force group provides sustainable benefits because it increasingly empowers this group in disseminating wise and environmentally friendly lifestyles to the living environment and work environment.-----------AbstrakPerkembangan teknologi yang pesat memicu sikap dan perilaku konsumerisme.

Abstract

Community-based tourism management precariously depends on a robust community, especially in tourist villages. Establishing an organizational framework characterized by effective coordination and well-defined member relationships strengthens the community and defines each individual's role and responsibility. To enhance the efficiency of the established structure, this study aims to investigate the function of the arts and cultural community within Pancoh Ecotourism Village and ascertain its capacity for further development as a Cultural Village. This study utilises a community development framework (Community Development Foundation, 2011) comprising six principles—common goals, cooperation, strengths and independence, equity and inclusiveness, participation, and community empowerment. Community representatives, village officials, tourism actors, and workers of Pancoh Ecotourism Village participated in a series of focus group discussions (FGD). Consequently, the inhabitants of Pancoh Ecotourism Village successfully established an organisational framework that catered to their requirements and unambiguously delineated every individual's specific duties and obligations. In addition, actors, tourism managers, and arts and culture community members can solicit diverse opportunities and curate cultural tour packages that feature renowned artistic and cultural attractions and products.

Abstract

Kawruh Jiwa Ki Ageng Suryomentaram is a local based psychotherapy originally from Yogyakarta, which is based on human feelings principally for self-introspection, hence Kawruh Jiwa means knowledge of feeling (raos). This study aims to identify whether Kawruh Jiwa Psychotherapy has the potential to become a wellness tourism attraction and if so, what potential does Kawruh Jiwa Psychotherapy have. This research is a qualitative descriptive study and data collection is gathered through interviews, observation, and literature study in 2021. The potential for wellness tourism in Kawruh Jiwa Psychotherapy is identified based on seven wellness tourism variables in the Extended Wellness Model (Mueller and Kaufmann, 2001), and supporting data is obtained through students' perceptions of mental health issues. The results obtained from this study indicate that Kawruh Jiwa Psychotherapy has the potential to be developed as a new wellness tourism attraction in Indonesia based on local wisdom. This study revealed that from a total of 7 variables in the wellness tourism dimension, Kawruh Jiwa Psychotherapy supports of 6 variables: Mind (mental activity, education), Body (physical fitness), Self-Responsibility, Relaxation, Social Contacts, and Environmental Sensitivity. Its potential to be one of the wellness tourism attractions in Yogyakarta surely needs support from stakeholders, especially the local government to make Dusun Balong, a location where it takes place will have more proper tourism attractions, accessibility, amenities, and ancillary (4A aspects).

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study explores women's participation in managing community-based tourism in Pancoh Ecotourism Village. Strengthening women’s roles as innovators, leaders, and decision-makers is crucial for tourism recovery post-pandemic. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions (FGD) with 35 participants, including tourism actors, business managers, youth communities, women activists, and academics. Over 12 months, interviews, FGDs, and seminars were conducted to assess the level of female involvement in tourism management. The findings reveal that although women actively participate in tourism activities, only a few hold leadership positions or serve as decision-makers.Women's participation is categorized into two main groups:older women who manage accommodations (homestays) and younger women involved in guiding tours. Socio-cultural values, particularly the perception that women are primarily responsible for domestic duties, limit their involvement in higher-level management. This research highlights the need for more inclusive tourism planning that involves women and youth in leadership roles, contributing to a more equitable development of tourism.ABSTRAKPenelitian ini mengeksplorasi partisipasi perempuan dalam pengelolaan pariwisata di Desa Ekowisata Pancoh.
