Abstract

Ternate Island, part of the Wallacea region in North Maluku, harbors rich avifaunal diversity that holds ecological and tourism significance. This study assessed bird species diversity across ten sites to support geotourism initiatives in the Aspiring Ternate Geopark. Surveys were conducted from May 2023 to February 2024 using the MacKinnon List method, complemented by incidental observations and literature review. A total of 60 species from 35 families were recorded, including 11 species endemics to North Maluku and nine migratory taxa. The Columbidae family was the most represented, while the Endangered white cockatoo (Cacatua alba) highlighted the island’s conservation value. Species richness was highest at Ngade Lagoon (26 species) and lowest at Nukila Park (7 species). The Shannon–Wiener diversity index (H’ = 2.88) indicated moderate diversity. These findings provide essential baseline data for biodiversity management and demonstrate the potential of avifauna as a flagship resource for birdwatching-based geotourism development.

Abstract

Abstract The community's habit of owning wild animals is still ongoing until now. This has become one of the threats to the existence of wildlife in their natural habitat. Parrots, with their ability to imitate surrounding sounds, have become a popular pet choice. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine the influence of knowledge, attitudes, and practices about parrots on the profile of the community. The study differentiates between those who owner bird and those who do not. Data collection was conducted for two months in Ternate and Sofifi, North Maluku. The method used was purposive sampling, interviewing as many as 104 respondents who had been determined. The interview data was processed into multiple linear regression values and canonical correlations. The results of this research identified that the majority of those who owned parrots were aged between 42–57 (36%); female (52%); with high school graduates (46%); and engaged in various professions, such as housewives or entrepreneurs (71%). On the other hand, those who were non-owner parrots were dominated by individuals aged 10–25 (46%); male (65%); with undergraduate degrees (62%); and categorized as students (38%). The results of this study show that knowledge and attitudes have an influence on education, profession, and age of the community on the topic of curly-billed bird maintenance.

Abstract

Sumedang was one of the districts in West Java Province that consisted of 26 sub-districts, 7 neighborhoods, and 270 villages. Bangbayang Village, located in the Situraja neighborhood, was one of the villages with ecotourism potential that had not been fully developed. The topography of the village, characterized by hills, had its own charm, and its biodiversity had not been widely explored. One aspect of this biodiversity that had potential for ecotourism was the diversity of bird species found there. Therefore, the research aimed to explore the potential and diversity of birds in Bangbayang Village, Sumedang, in the context of developing birdwatching science and ecotourism. The research was conducted in January 2023. Birds were observed using the point count method, and the data were analyzed for conservation status, the Shannon-Wiener species diversity index, the Margalef richness index, bird species evenness, and the Simpson dominance index. The results identified 35 species of birds from 20 families, 12 of which were endemic to Indonesia. Among them, two species were classified as NT (Near Threatened), two as EN (Endangered), six were included in the CITES Appendix II category, and eight species were protected under Ministerial Regulation P.106 of 2018. The diversity index, species richness index, and evenness index values were high, recorded at 3.343, 7.575, and 0.940, respectively, while no bird species dominated, with a dominance index value of 0.043. Based on their status, nine species were identified as having potential for ecotourism attraction: the black eagle, javan hawk-eagle, crested serpent-eagle, oriental honey-buzzard, flame-fronted barbet, black-banded barbet, bar-winged prinia, black-thighed falconet, and java sparrow.
