Abstract

The focus of the government on banking deregulation was to facilitate banks operational activities and performance. Nevertheless, instances of violations persist, including, breaches of the minimum lending limit (BMPK), granting credit without a thorough feasibility study process, and non-compliance with liquidity reserve regulations. Even though there was rapid emergence of new banks, this expansion had not always corresponded to an improvement in the financial health of these institutions. The enactment of Law No. 10 of 1998 provided an opportunity for the establishment of anti-usury (credit interest) Islamic banks, which prompted existing conventional banks to adopt a dual banking system, as observed in Malaysia, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Indonesia. The growth of sharia banking holds the promise of fostering a stronger national banking sector. However, certain unresolved issues persist, particularly in assessing the performance disparity between shari’a and conventional banks. This study aimed to investigate the differences in the financial performance of both shari’a and conventional banks in Indonesia during the specified year (2021). It encompassed the population of conventional national private commercial banks and national private shari’a commercial banks. From this population, a sample of eight conventional and five shari’a banks that remained operational until 2021 was selected. The results showed three significant differences in the average financial performance between both banks, specifically, ROA, BOPO, and LDR. Conventional banks exhibited a comparatively lower ROA, higher BOPO, and lower LDR. Furthermore, the comprehensive financial performance analysis effectively distinguished between these two groups of banks. Regarding ROA, BOPO, and LDR, conventional banks appeared to be less profitable than shari’a banks, except in terms of CAR and RORA performance.

Abstract

This study explores the evolution of Islamic economic thought in Indonesia, from traditional practices to modernized systems. The scope includes tracing significant transformations in Islamic economics and its adoption in the financial and social sectors. The purpose of the study is to analyze how traditional Islamic economic principles have adapted to contemporary economic demands. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this research employs library research to gather insights from academic works and historical documents. The findings reveal three major phases in the development of Islamic economic thought in Indonesia: the traditional phase, the modern phase marked by the establishment of Islamic financial institutions, and the contemporary phase, where Islamic finance has become more integrated into the national economy. The study concludes that, despite modernization, Islamic economics in Indonesia remains grounded in core principles of social justice, economic freedom, and responsibility. This evolution underscores the potential of Islamic economics to offer sustainable economic solutions aligned with both religious values and modern needs.

Abstract

Poverty is a complex social problem and a serious challenge for countries with a Muslim majority population. Islamic economics offers an approach based on the values of social justice, solidarity, and ethics to address this issue. Amidst global economic instability causing conventional financial institutions to fail, Islamic economics has shown resilience and significant growth. This study aims to analyze the role of Islamic economics in alleviating poverty and empowering the community’s economy. Based on principles outlined in the Quran, this research explores the concept of empowerment through two main approaches: social rehabilitation and community development. The findings indicate that the Islamic economic approach has the potential to improve the welfare of the poor through fairer and more sustainable empowerment mechanisms.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of sharia economics in improving social and economic welfare through the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. This method is carried out in a structured manner to collect, evaluate, and analyze literature relevant to the research topic. The first stage is to formulate research questions regarding the contribution of sharia economics in poverty alleviation and financial inclusion. Literature was collected from scientific databases such as Google Scholar, Scopus, and ScienceDirect with keywords related to sharia economics and social welfare. Literature selection is carried out based on inclusion and exclusion criteria to ensure quality and relevance. The data obtained was analyzed using a thematic analysis method, grouping the findings into main themes such as the role of zakat, Islamic banking, and the impact of waqf on the community's economy. Validation is carried out using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) tool to ensure the quality of the articles analyzed. The results of the study show that sharia economics plays a significant role in improving social and economic welfare with the principles of social justice, sustainability, and social responsibility. Instruments such as zakat, waqf, infaq, and alms contribute greatly to community empowerment and the reduction of economic disparities. However, the development of the Islamic economy still faces challenges such as lack of understanding, inadequate regulations, and competition with conventional economic systems. Therefore, education, regulatory improvement, and integration with the global market are needed to maximize the benefits of the sharia economy.

Abstract

The principle of economic justice plays a crucial role in ensuring the equitable distribution of resources and promoting social and economic welfare. This article explores how the application of economic justice principles can help address economic inequality in East Java Province, focusing on the government's role in reducing regional disparities. Despite East Java’s rapid economic growth, inequalities between urban centers like Surabaya and rural areas such as Madura and Bojonegoro remain significant challenges. Through an in-depth literature review, this study identifies key principles of economic justice, such as the principles of distributional justice, balance, public benefit, and protection, which must be applied to achieve inclusive prosperity. The findings suggest that government efforts through programs like Direct Cash Assistance (BLT), agrarian reform, and the development of sectors such as tourism and local industries are crucial in reducing inequalities. However, the greatest challenges remain in bridging the infrastructure and human resource gaps between cities and rural areas. This study proposes a more coordinated approach between central and regional governments to ensure that the principles of economic justice are effectively implemented across the province, allowing all segments of society to benefit from sustainable economic growth.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the micro-business financing provided by Baitul Maal wat Tamwil (BMT) Balung and its impact on increasing the business capital of its clients. Micro businesses, which are typically managed by small-scale entrepreneurs, often face difficulties in accessing formal financing. Therefore, BMT Balung, as a microfinance institution, plays an essential role in providing financing to support the sustainability and development of micro businesses. This research uses a quantitative approach with a descriptive analysis method to gather data from clients who have received financing from BMT Balung. The data were obtained through interviews and questionnaires from 50 respondents who are micro-business owners. The results of the study show that the financing provided by BMT Balung significantly increases the business capital of its clients. This financing positively influences the micro businesses' ability to expand production capacity, purchase raw materials, and improve product quality. Furthermore, it has a positive impact on income and the welfare of the entrepreneurs. However, challenges in repaying installments remain a concern for some clients. The conclusion of this study is that the financing provided by BMT Balung plays a strategic role in increasing micro-business capital and supporting business development.
