Abstract

In the context of English teaching and learning, teachers can employ communication strategies to facilitate students' comprehension of the study material. The aim of this study is to outline the categories of communication strategies used by an English teacher at SDN 2 Jatiluwih. This investigation takes a descriptive qualitative approach, focusing on an English teacher within the SDN 2 Jatiluwih setting. During the observations in the 6th grade English class in SDN 2 Jatiluwih, the teacher not only use simple English but also employed body language. Moreover, the students there were quite unique because they tended to use the Indonesian language. Therefore, the teacher, in this case, it was required to use various communication strategies in teaching. The theoretical framework for this study relies on Dornyei's communication strategies theory. The research outcomes reveal that the teacher employed five distinct communication strategies in the classroom to support student learning, namely stalling or time-gaining strategies (1.724%), literal translation (1.724%), prefabricated patterns (5.17%), non-linguistic signals (12.07%), and code-switching (79.31%).

Abstract

Metaphorical language innovation, which originates from thought processes and interactions between fellow language speakers and with the natural surroundings, leads to various configurations of lingual forms. Therefore, this study investigated the linguistic innovations to create metaphorical expression, its role in decorating text, and the effect of globalization on metaphor in daily life. The data for this study were metaphorical languages in daily life, social and online media. This research applied a qualitative approach and the concept and theory of metaphor. The data were collected using participant and non-participatory observation methods. The data were analyzed using the Intra-Lingual Referential Method and the Extra-Lingual Referential Method or the Distributional and Referential Method, using the techniques of relating and comparing the elements of language related to metaphor as the research object. The results of data analysis showed that the analogy of target and source domain gives rise to simple and complex metaphors. Metaphors have an essential role in building the beauty of a text. Metaphors decorate a text and stimulate the reader's imagination when reading literary works. Besides, globalization distributes, enriches, and colors the metaphors in a language

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis keterlambatan proses pemerolehan bahasa anak dalam tataran fonetiknya dan menganalisis faktor yang menyebabkan anak tersebut mengalami gejala keterlambatan berbahasa. Sumber data penelitian ini adalah tiga orang anak dengan rentang usia 2-3 tahun yang memiliki gejala keterlambatan dalam berbicara. Jenis kelamin dari ketiga sumber data adalah satu orang anak perempuan dan dua orang anak laki-laki. Pengumpulan data menggunakan metode observasi dan teknik catat, rekam dan wawancara. Tahap analisis data di dalam penelitian ini melalui tiga tahap, yakni tahap reduksi, penyajian, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa jumlah kosa kata yang dimiliki oleh ketiga anak tersebut masih terbatas karena hanya menggunakan satu kata dan masih kesulitan untuk menggunakan dua padanan kata atau lebih dalam berkomunikasi. Pada saat bertutur, ketiga responden masih kurang jelas melafalkan beberapa fonem tertentu dan dalam melafalkan satu kata ketiga anak menggunakan proses penghilangan fonem, penggantian fonem dan penambahan fonem. Keterlambatan dalam pemerolehan bahasa ketiga anak tersebut disebabkan oleh faktor eksternal yang berhubungan dengan lingkungan dan teknologi.

Abstract

This study analyzed the frequency and types of illocutionary acts spoken by contestants during the Semi-Finale Service Challenge of Australia MasterChef Season 13, using Searle's (1979) theory about the type of illocutionary act. The data collected from the Contestant utterances on the Australia MasterChef Season 13 when accomplishing a mission, explaining the dish or situation, and talk to judges or another contestant. This study used qualitative methods to analyze the illocutionary act spoken by the contestant during the competition and describe the data with literal explanation.  The result found the Assertive Illocutionary Act was the most dominant uses occur 92 or 54% data, the second frequently uses in the Directive Illocutionary Act occur 35 or 20 % data, and followed by the Commissive Illocutionary Act occur 23 or 13% data, the next is Expressive Illocutionary Act that occur 19 or 11% data, and the last position is the Declarative Illocutionary Act that consist 3 or 2% data. This study highlights the contestants use of language to describe, command, promise, express emotions, and declare states in a high-stress culinary competition setting. The implication of this research provided the understanding of the illocutionary act in daily live and the impact or the power of illocutionary act on conversation.
