Abstract

The Indonesian education system currently implements the centralized Merdeka Curriculum, which, despite its intention to provide flexibility in learning, faces significant challenges, particularly in terms of unequal access to educational infrastructure across regions. To address this issue, it is essential to develop adaptive learning models that reflect the diverse local contexts. A strategic approach involves analyzing the sociocultural characteristics of communities in various areas. Batik Nusantara, a cultural heritage rich in symbolic meaning, illustrates these regional distinctions, primarily categorized into coastal and inland batik, each representing different societal values and worldviews. Coastal batik tends to reflect openness, boldness, and external cultural influences, while inland batik is deeply rooted in philosophical and symbolic traditions. These distinctions offer valuable insights for integrating local wisdom into curriculum design. This study adopts a qualitative methodology with a descriptive approach, utilizing literature review techniques from academic journals, articles, catalogs, and other scholarly sources. The analysis of batik motifs provides a foundation for contextualized learning through Problem-Based Learning and Project-Based Learning approaches. Such models have the potential to enhance students’ cultural identity, character development, and engagement by aligning learning experiences with the realities and values of their respective communities.

Abstract

Surakarta is the center of Javanese culture in Indonesia. Many kinds of arts and culture have not been studied in depth, one of which is the phenomenon of cultural acculturation. The arrival of foreign countries to Indonesia influenced the unification of cultures that created new cultural forms. There are several ethnicities and races that live and settle in this area that influence the creation of new cultures, one of which is the Chinese people who come from China. Every year the Chinese and the general public hold a joint Chinese New Year celebration centered on Pasar Gede Hardjonagoro. The relationship that occurs in the ceremonial is a potential to get findings about the harmony of cultural acculturation that occurs from this phenomenon. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative type as an effort to present naturalistic data in the field in the form of sentences. There are several techniques applied in the data collection process, namely observation, interviews, and documentation. The application of the three techniques is based on the suitability of the topic and is supported by an approach in the form of theory. The approach comes from the theory of art anthropology proposed by Ruth Bunzel. The relationship between people, culture, and art occurs in harmony in Surakarta City. One place that has become a cultural center in the city of tolerance is Pasar Gede Hardjonagoro. The traditional market is one proof of the harmony of Chinese and Javanese cultural acculturation that goes hand in hand. The Chinese New Year celebration is a ceremonial example that can be followed by the whole community, without any special attention to the background. This cultural acculturation is a step to maintain tolerance in the community.

Abstract

Contemporary political communication shows a significant shift towards the dominance of visual culture, especially in the context of political campaigns in metropolitan areas. Visuals no longer function as supporting elements, but as the main medium in shaping images, social relations, and political discourse. This study aims to analyze the visual strategies of Zohran Mamdani's campaign in the 2025 New York City mayoral election using the Grammar of Visual Design framework. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with visual analysis methods on campaign materials in the form of posters, digital content, and graphic designs published through the campaign's official online media. The results show that Mamdani's campaign shifts the center of political meaning from the dominance of the candidate's figure to a collective representation based on the city's identity and urban experience. Representational analysis shows that the city is positioned as the main political subject, while the candidate's figure is subordinated in a broader visual system. In the interactive and compositional dimensions, an egalitarian relationship between candidates and voters is built through non-authoritative gazenon, equal social distance, and the dominance of design structures such as color, typography, and layout. These findings show that visual design operates as an active political actor in shaping urban political discourse. This research contributes to the study of Visual Communication Design by positioning political campaign design as a cultural practice that produces meaning, social relations, and political ideology.
