Abstract

The biodegradation of oxodegradable polyethylene has traditionally been carried out using pure strains of polyethylene-degrading agents. Research on polyethylene biodegradation is using other microbes than pure strains still scarce. This study utilized lactic acid bacteria, specifically Lactobacillus casei, to know the capability of Lactobacillus casei to degrade polyethylene. The results indicate that Lactobacillus casei can degrade polyethylene plastic. Polyethylene plastic biodegrades by 27.92% over 28 days without preheating. The optimal temperature and pH for the process are 26°C and pH 5, respectively. On the other hand, the preheated polyethylene plastic performed at 9.65% biodegradation over 28 days, with an optimum temperature of 28°C and an optimum pH of 5.6.  Key words: Biodegradation, percentage, oxodegradable,  polyethylene

Abstract

Creating students who are superior in spiritual and scientific terms can be done through learning activities that integrate Islamic science. The integration of Islamic science in science-biology learning can be done using the Al-Qur'an integration model as a source of inspiration and confirmation. The aim of this research is to describe the planning, implementation and evaluation of the implementation of the integration of science and the Koran in science-biology learning on respiratory system material for class VIII students at MTs Negeri 3 Blitar. The type of research used is descriptive qualitative research with data collection techniques using interview, observation and documentation methods. The results of the research show that of the two class VIII teachers, namely SA1 and SA2, one of them (SA2) implemented the integration of Al-Qur'an science into the respiratory system material which can be seen from the planning, implementation and evaluation stages of the learning carried out. SA1 has not implemented the integration of Al-Qur'an science at the planning and evaluation stages. SA1 has implemented Al-Qur'an science at the implementation stage, but not in the respiratory system material. Therefore, this integration is a form of development carried out by teachers personally so that not all teachers have the ability to implement it.

Abstract

An example of utilizing technology in learning is the transition from conventional learning resources like print to digital ones like flipbooks. Choosing digital learning resources is considered advantageous compared to print learning resources because digital resources are more engaging and interactive, thus capturing students' interest in learning. In this study, the development of a flipbook on the regulation process in plants using the ADDIE development model was conducted. This development model consists of 5 stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. This research aims to understand the process of developing the flipbook learning resource and to assess its feasibility. Feasibility testing was performed through expert validation, considering aspects such as content, media, design, and language. The results of this study show a validity score of 82.6% from media experts, 92.3% from content experts, and 78% from subject teachers. With these scores, the flipbook is concluded to be valid and engaging, thus suitable for use in learning activities. Keywords:  flipbook, learning sources, ADDIE, Biology, Independent Curriculum

Abstract

Dragonflies also play a role in ecosystems as predators and bioindicators of water quality. The study aims to determine the community structure and diversity of dragonflies in Lake Aqua. The study was conducted in April 2021. Type of qualitative descriptive research, with visual day flying method with 3 observation locations based on vegetation composition and ease of access. Sampling using insect nets, documentation and identification. Based on the results of the study, 10 species of odonata were obtained, including 5 species of dragonflies (Anisoptera) and 5 species of needle dragonflies (Zygoptera). The total number of dragonflies found in 3 locations was 337 individuals from 6 families, including Euphaea variegata, Heliocypha fenestrata, Rhinocypha heterostigma, Vestalis luctuosa, Coeliccia membranipes, Onychogomphus fruhstorferi, Orthetrum glaucum, Orthetrum pruinosum, Orthetrum sabina, and Pantala flavescens. The results of the diversity index (H') showed 2.04 medium categories, the highest abundance was found in the species Euphaea variegata which was valued at 24.9% and the lowest abundance was found in Coeliccia membranipes worth 1.2%. The evenness index of 0.9 is high, the dominance index of 0.2 is low, which means dragonflies have the same opportunity to utilize resources. The calculation of the Family Biotic Index (FBI) to 3 locations of 0.02 is included in the category of very good water quality. The higher the number of dragonflies in the ecosystem, indicating that the ecosystem is still natural and environmental sustainability is maintained. When pollution occurs in the waters, it causes the life cycle of dragonflies to be disrupted and their population to decline.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of clove leaf essential oil (Syzygium aromaticum) against heterotrophic bacteria isolated from food products. Clove leaves were collected from Malang Regency, Indonesia, and the essential oil was extracted via steam-water distillation. Bacterial isolates were obtained from food samples using serial dilution and pour plate techniques. Antibacterial activity was assessed using the agar diffusion method at three oil concentrations (50%, 75%, and 100%), with Amoxicillin trihydrate as the positive control and sterile distilled water as the negative control. The morphological characteristics of the isolates were documented, and inhibition zones were measured. Results indicated that inhibition strength increased with oil concentration up to 75%, with the largest numerical inhibition observed against isolate K2 at 100% concentration (31.3 mm), approaching the positive control’s efficacy. Statistical analyses confirmed that differences among treatments were significant (p < 0.001), except between 75% and 100% concentrations, suggesting a plateau in activity beyond the minimum inhibitory concentration. The findings highlight clove leaf essential oil’s potential as a natural antibacterial agent for food preservation, offering an environmentally sustainable alternative to synthetic antimicrobials. However, in vitro conditions may not fully represent performance in real food matrices, warranting further research on its application, stability, sensory effects, and synergistic combinations with other natural antimicrobials.

Abstract

Nervous system material tends to be difficult to understand and many theories need to be conveyed concisely and interestingly. This research aims to develop learning media in the form of interactive powerpoints on nervous system material that can improve learning outcomes. The research and development model uses the ADDIE model. Data collection methods use observation, interviews and questionnaires. Validity trials were carried out by material expert lecturers and media experts. Meanwhile, the practicality test was carried out by the class XI biology subject teacher and 20 students. The data analysis technique used is qualitative and quantitative descriptive analysis. The research results show that the average validity of each interactive PowerPoint is 75% in the valid category. The average practicality value for interactive PowerPoint is respectively 90% and 86.85% in the very practical category as a learning medium. Then the t-test results obtained sig. (2-tailed) of 0.001 < 0.05, indicating that interactive PowerPoint learning media is effective in improving student learning outcomes.

Abstract

The rapid development of technology has led to digitalization in various fields, including education. In higher education, students are required to master technology according to their field of expertise. One of the technological applications for biology students is bioinformatics, which can be integrated into medical biotechnology learning through relevant media. This study aims to develop a bioinformatics-based e-magazine as a supporting medium for medical biotechnology learning. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE model (Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). The needs analysis involved 66 students, with all participants (100%) agreeing on the importance of developing a bioinformatics e-magazine. The e-magazine design was developed by incorporating the in silico research results of Moringa oleifera leaf compounds as potential agents against lung cancer. Expert validation showed feasibility scores of 91.25% (material) and 85.7% (media), both categorized as very valid. The practicality assessment by users obtained an average score of 89.8% (very practical). Meanwhile, the effectiveness test yielded an average N-Gain score of 0.9 (medium improvement) with an N-Gain percentage of 59.71% (fairly effective). Therefore, the bioinformatics e-magazine can be categorized as feasible, practical, and effective to support medical biotechnology learning.
