Abstract

Need analysis (NA) is one of the initial steps in developing learning materials. In the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) context, it is an essential asset to identify learners’ needs and determine the areas they are lacking. Thus far, NA particularly in Communication Science Program (CSP) in Indonesia has not been widely explored. In University Y, the CSP students are lacking English language learning materials. Therefore, this mixed-method study aims to explore the results of NA for developing such materials. The data were gathered through document analysis, lecturer and alumna interviews, along with student surveys. The results revealed that students' learning needs focus on the desire to improve their English proficiency, particularly in speaking and grammar, for career orientation. Moreover, the materials should be compiled with text types that support the achievement of the goals e.g., advertisements, reports, narrative and argumentative texts that are preferable to be taught through a BL delivery method. These materials should also be actualized in activities that can accommodate three learning styles, namely visual, audio, and kinesthetic, with more emphasis on the first. The implication of these findings will be helpful to create a more effective English class based on the current demands.

Abstract

Teacher professional learning (TPL) has been considered a significant need to strengthen teachers’ professional growth, which in turn fosters high-quality teaching and enhances students’ learning experiences. It has become a prominent interest in education around the globe, including in Indonesia. However, little is known about the contribution of a university program, especially a Master's program, towards TPL in the Indonesian context. This study aims to investigate the contribution of the Master's English Language Education (MELE) Program towards TPL on graduate students who have become teachers at once. The data were collected from graduate students of the program. A focus group was conducted with nine representatives of two classes that were categorized into two different groups. Constant comparison analysis was used as the data analysis method. The findings revealed three important themes namely applying knowledge into practice; transforming teaching through teachers’ self-inquiry; and improving knowledge, skills, and attitudes toward academic publication. The paper also presents the empirical evidence that takes place during the program and how it contributes to their professionalism.

Abstract

Reading comprehension skills are pivotal for the academic success and future careers of communication science students, making the use of effective teaching strategies essential for their development. This Classroom Action Research (CAR) investigates how Strategies-Based Instruction (SBI) improves students’ reading comprehension and overall learning experiences. Data were collected through observation, tests, and interviews, with quantitative analysis conducted using SPSS and qualitative analysis performed thematically. The results indicate that the implementation of SBI in reading classes increases students’ reading comprehension and positively influences aspects such as materials organization, student engagement, attitudes towards reading, and motivation to attend classes. Additionally, SBI promotes direct strategies that assist students master key skills, thereby better preparing them for their future careers. This study suggests that teachers should be equipped with both technological and pedagogical knowledge, through workshops or training, to improve their professionalism, particularly in teaching reading through the SBI framework. HIGHLIGHTS: SBI increases students’ reading comprehension. SBI Positively influences learning experiences. SBI promotes direct strategies that assist students master key skills for their futurecareers.

Abstract

The need to take English as a foreign language proficiency test (known as TOEFL [Test of English Language Proficiency]) has been gaining popularity in Indonesia. The increasing demands for such a test and its expensive cost have reinforced many institutions to develop TOEFL instruments and administer the test internally. However, constructing a test instrument is a complex process that makes conducting item analysis become more challenging. Meanwhile, item analysis is crucial to assess the items' quality. Therefore, this study reported the results of statistically analyzing 20 questions of TOEFL reading comprehension that were analyzed in terms of the test reliability, the item and person fit, and the items' difficulty level. Thirty-eight members of the English Department Students' Association of a state university in West Java participated in this study by taking the reading test. The data were analyzed using the Rasch model by utilizing the Quest program. The results showed that four items (36.8%) did not fulfill the ideal criteria of a valid test because they were too easy and too difficult to be given to the target test takers; thus, they needed to be discarded. Meanwhile, 16 items (63.2%) are of good quality and can be used immediately in the proficiency test, especially to measure reading comprehension skills, because they have fulfilled the standard requirements for a valid test. The findings have provided insight into the importance of item analysis in validating test instruments to improve the test quality for future administrations.
