Abstract

Need analysis (NA) is one of the initial steps in developing learning materials. In the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) context, it is an essential asset to identify learners’ needs and determine the areas they are lacking. Thus far, NA particularly in Communication Science Program (CSP) in Indonesia has not been widely explored. In University Y, the CSP students are lacking English language learning materials. Therefore, this mixed-method study aims to explore the results of NA for developing such materials. The data were gathered through document analysis, lecturer and alumna interviews, along with student surveys. The results revealed that students' learning needs focus on the desire to improve their English proficiency, particularly in speaking and grammar, for career orientation. Moreover, the materials should be compiled with text types that support the achievement of the goals e.g., advertisements, reports, narrative and argumentative texts that are preferable to be taught through a BL delivery method. These materials should also be actualized in activities that can accommodate three learning styles, namely visual, audio, and kinesthetic, with more emphasis on the first. The implication of these findings will be helpful to create a more effective English class based on the current demands.

Abstract

The present research evaluates the efficiency of the Photo-Fenton-like process under UV irradiation by varying ratio of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) to Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and H₂O₂ to ferrous ion (Fe²⁺) using wastewater from a batik manufacturer in Gresik. Initial experiments demonstrated that varying the ratio of H2O2/COD contributes to Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) removal, while maintaining a constant H2O2/Fe2+ ratio. The result reveals a significant effect on Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) removal achieving 64.58% efficiency which indicates that highly reactive OH* radicals successfully generated in photo-Fenton-like process. Further optimization by increasing the ratio H2O2/COD = 15 (g/g) and H2O2/Fe2+ = 20 (g/g) resulting on maximum percentage of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) removal of 92.47% proving the massive production of OH* radicals. The kinetics reaction model which describes the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) degradation rate showed the BMG kinetic model, with parameters of 1/m = 0.9352, 1/b = 0.7159, and a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.9986, indicating an excellent fit and high predictive accuracy of the kinetic model for this process. Abstract

Attaining proficiency in grammar is crucial for students as it serves as the foundation for language use. However, many individuals shy away from learning it, perceiving it as a daunting and challenging task. This research is aimed at enhancing grammar teaching by applying Grammar Wheel. It focuses on the active and passive voice mastery of three forms of tenses including simple past tense, past continuous tense, and past perfect tense. Conducted in one of the public Senior High Schools in Indonesia, this study was participated by 35 students and an English teacher. Having troubles in comprehending grammar, the teacher needed media and activities to deliver the grammar materials interestingly. Two cycles of Classroom Action Research (CAR) were implemented. The data were collected using observation sheets, field notes, video recordings, interview guidelines, and exercise sheets. The analysis was carried out qualitatively following the steps proposed by Cresswell (2012). The results revealed that language teaching had been successfully improved and students were more motivated to engage in the learning process being in a comfortable and supportive learning environment. Furthermore, learners’ knowledge in mastering the three types of tenses increased significantly as evidenced by their writing. Hence, the Grammar Wheel has proven to be an effective tool for teaching grammar in the classroom.

Abstract

Analysis of learners' characteristics and needs is important in learning planning, especially in the Kurikulum Merdeka which emphasizes learner-centered learning. This study was conducted with the aim of analyzing the characteristics and needs of students of SMAN 2 Bantul as well as the strategies used by the teaching teacher in learning English. The results of the analysis will later become a reference in the development of teaching modules. The participants of this study were 36 students of class X SMAN 2 Bantul Yogyakarta, who were in the second semester of the 2022/2023 academic year. Instruments in the form of survey questionnaires were distributed to obtain quantitative data. The collected data were then processed and analyzed using quantitative descriptive analysis technique. The results obtained show that the majority of students have a visual learning style in group or paired activities and utilize technology in the process.

Abstract

Abstract

This research investigates how internship experience and work information mastery influence vocational students’ work readiness, with work motivation acting as a mediating factor. The research population comprises all twelfth-grade students majoring in Mechanical Engineering at a Vocational High School in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, totaling 310 individuals. The maximum sample of 170 students was determined using Issac & Michael’s formula. The sample was selected through purposive sampling techniques, and data were collected using questionnaires, tests, and documentation. Descriptive statistical analysis was employed to summarize the characteristics of each variable, while hypothesis testing was conducted using path analysis in an ex-post facto research design. The results indicate that the proposed research model satisfies both validity and reliability tests, thus validating the suitability of the model. The findings reveal: (1) a significant indirect effect between internship experience and work readiness mediated by work motivation (t = 3.787, sig. 0.000), and (2) a significant indirect effect of work information mastery and work readiness through work motivation (t = 2.907, sig. 0.003). The results of the study indicate that internship experience and mastery of information through work motivation influence students' job readiness. The implication of this research is that schools need to increase collaboration with industry and strengthen the role of teachers, parents, and the Community Empowerment Agency (BKK) in providing information and guidance about the world of work, so that vocational high school graduates are better prepared and more easily accepted into the workforce.
