Abstract

The decision to be childfree is a decision that is still considered to be anti-mainstream, so they are vulnerable to cynicism and public rejection. Individuals with identities that differ from generally accepted norms usually use social media as a medium for self-actualization. This study adopts a constructivist research paradigm and employs a narrative methodology involving in-depth interviews with six childfree participants. Thematic analysis was applied to the collected data. The study reveals that participants from diverse backgrounds share a common perspective on what constitutes a meaningful life, which differs from the prevailing societal norms in Indonesia. It highlights the importance of a well-defined self-concept in achieving psychological fulfillment among childfree individuals. Interestingly, social media serves primarily as a tool for sharing, networking, and dispelling misconceptions about the childfree lifestyle. Rather than seeking self-validation or actively promoting their choice, childfree individuals view social media to communicate the outcomes of their interactions with society. This study highlights the lives of individuals who choose to be childfree when using social media without hiding their identity as an effort to build respectful social relationships. Thus, childfree individuals interpret Instagram as only a medium for conveying the results of the interaction process with the environment, instead of self-validation.Keywords: childfree; Instagram; self-actualization

Abstract

Background: The discourse on fitness is one of the prevalent discussions in contemporary society. The fitness discourse, as understood today, is rooted in scientific research and exerts influence over other discourses related to fitness. The most widely embraced notion of fitness by the general public revolves around health. Purpose: Researchers argue that social media has become a means of panopticism, where attributes such as physical activities and sportswear serve as representations of normalized body fitness. This study employs Foucault's arguments in observing the daily posts of social media users regarding body fitness discourses as a form of panopticism. Methods: The research embraces a post-positivist paradigm and employs a mixed methods approach, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative methods. The quantitative segment employs surveys, while the qualitative aspect utilizes in-depth interviews with three informants. Conclusion: The findings of this study illustrate how panopticism manifests in social media posts, encouraging individuals who utilize these platforms to partake in physical activities. Furthermore, the study uncovers how social media posts not only depict the existing reality but also facilitate a simulated reality. Implications: This research underscores how the discourse surrounding body fitness, disseminated through media practices, is perpetuated to bolster dominant groups within the cultural industry.

Abstract

The Indonesian Government took some preventive measures to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus, including social restrictions and encouraging individuals to stay at home and avoid needless gatherings. This study aimed to identify factors related to anxiety symptoms during large-scale social restrictions. This study employed a cross-sectional design using the snowball technique in an online survey. A total of 788 respondents comprised the target population to detect the smallest effect size (Cohen's dz = .2), with the level of power of 0.8 using G*Power 3.1, specifically targeting adults aged over 18 years. Out of 1,194 people who took part in the survey, 847 completed all the answers. The findings revealed that 42% of participants experienced feelings of nervousness, anxiety, or agitation, and 42.5% became easily agitated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nonetheless, 81.7% of those surveyed reported being able to manage their concerns, and 80.7% had good time management during the COVID-19 pandemic. Descriptive analysis showed that sex, residence, marital status, number of children, occupational status, being infected by COVID-19, health concern, and time management had a relationship with anxiety symptoms.
