Abstract

Muhammad Syahrur, a renowned Islamic thinker in the contemporary era, has made significant contributions in this field. According to Syahrur, there is no need to stick to traditional interpretations in understanding the verses of the Koran. For example, in his analysis of QS. Ali-Imran: 14, he suggests that the word "nisa'" should not be translated literally as "adult woman" because it is not relevant to the current context. Syahrur's research uses a library research approach and utilizes semantic methods. He introduced the concept of la taradduf theory, which states that a word can have many meanings depending on the context of the verse. Syahrur emphasized the equality of women and men, rejecting the notion that women should be treated as objects of oppression or equated with inanimate objects.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the understanding and interpretation of Wasathiyah Islam according to two mufassirs Ibn Katsir and Hamka, who have different scientific backgrounds and social contexts. Ibn Kathir, as a classical scholar, emphasizes the meaning of wasathiyah as an attitude of fairness and balance in being a witness for humanity, while Hamka, with his contextual approach, highlights the importance of balance between worldly life and ukhrawi in every aspect of Muslim life. The method used in this study is thematic (maudhū'ī) which then analyzes Qur'anic verses related to wasathiyah interpreted by the two scholars. The results of the study show that despite the differences in approaches, both agree that Wasathiyah Islam is the key to maintaining the integrity of the ummah, reducing extremism, and building a social life based on justice and wisdom. This research makes an academic and practical contribution in understanding the relevance of the wasathiyah concept in facing various challenges of modern life.

Abstract

This research explores the concept of balanced living ("keseimbangan hidup") within Islam through a comparative analysis of Tafsir Al-Mishbah by M. Quraish Shihab and Tafsir Ibn Kathir. Employing a qualitative descriptive method with a thematic interpretive approach, the study examines how both interpretations address the multifaceted aspects of a balanced life. The analysis reveals points of convergence and divergence, particularly concerning the balance between worldly and otherworldly pursuits, the integration of physical, intellectual, and spiritual dimensions, and the responsibilities towards oneself, others, and the environment. This comparative study contributes to a richer understanding of the Islamic concept of balanced living by highlighting the nuanced perspectives offered by these two influential tafsirs.

Abstract

The phenomenon of beauty privilege that prioritizes physical appearance as a standard of social acceptance has created gender inequality and psychological pressure, especially for Muslim women in the digital era. Popular culture and social media reinforce visual dominance that places physical beauty above spiritual and intellectual values. In this context, there is a need to review the meaning of beauty in Islam and how the values of piety can be used as a counter-narrative to modern beauty ideology. This study aims to review the concept of privileged beauty from the perspective of the Qur'an using the maudhū'i interpretation approach and critical discourse analysis model of Norman Fairclough. The main data sources consist of verses of QS. Al-Hujurat: 13, QS. An-Nisa: 1, and QS. Ar-Rum: 21–22, accompanied by hadith and interpretations from classical scholars (Ath-Ṭabarī, Ibnu Kathīr) and contemporary (Quraish Shihab, Buya Hamka). This study also involves modern Islamic and sociological literature to understand the socio-cultural dynamics of beauty and identity of Muslim women. The results of the study indicate that piety in the Qur'an is a form of spiritual privilege that is superior to physical beauty. The concepts of qanitat and ḥāfiẓāt lil-ghayb underline the character of faithful women who maintain their honor, obey Allah, and are active in social life. Piety becomes a form of resistance to beauty capitalism and a tool for liberating women's identity from visual pressure. Qur'anic values offer relevant educational and advocacy strategies in building an authentic and empowered Muslim identity in the digital era. This study contributes to the discourse of gender and Islam, by emphasizing that piety is the ultimate beauty privilege in the Islamic paradigm.

Abstract

The custom of sitting on the parent-parents is discussed in this journal by the residents of Ujung Gading Village, a mixed-ethnic community that includes both Mandailing and Minangkabau residents. This duduk induk-induk custom, which is typically referred to as markumpul hepeng (money collection), is a mutually supportive attitude and a custom that is practiced by community organizations to aid the host in paying for the wedding. This publication looks at or investigates ways to comprehend and research Minang culture in Ujung Gading overall. Particularly in the duduk induk-induk procedures, it can also serve as a source of information and research for the advancement of linguistic science in the study of the duduk induk-induk tradition and comprehend it from an Islamic standpoint. Using qualitative data analysis methods, information was gathered via literature reviews, interviews, and documentation. The study's findings demonstrate that the coaching provided by traditional leaders—namely, putir, ninik mamak, and datuk kinayah—took the form of discussion.

Abstract

The human soul has two sides, good and bad. It is very important and urgent to pay attention to. A noble soul, is not pleased with anything, except for something that has the highest, noblest and most commendable (best) end result. As for the lowly soul, he only revolves around lowly matters, he approaches these lowly matters as a fly lands on dirt. A noble and high soul will not be pleased with acts of tyranny, vulgarity, theft and betrayal, because his soul is bigger and more noble than all of that. Meanwhile, a lowly and lowly soul is the opposite. Then every soul will tend to something that is in harmony and in accordance with it. Nafs in the context of talking about humans refers to the side in humans that has the potential to be good or bad. Research on human nature at least contains human traits that are naturally inherent in humans, or laws that apply to the human psyche, in this case the concept of nafs in the Koran is very important. The importance of research on the nafs is not only limited to needs, but also to the interests of parsing, predicting and controlling human behavior, both individually and as a group, both in relation to the field of da'wah or education as well as the interests of society in national development.
