Abstract

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is one of the obligatory courses in universities, and all undergraduate students are required to pass these courses. The main aim of ESP courses is to enhance students' knowledge to meet their academic requirements and future career needs in the global trend. This research used a mixed-method design that integrated both quantitative and qualitative data. Furthermore, the researchers used observations, questionnaires, and interviews to collect the data. The results of the students' need assessment about authentic materials were obtained through interviews with experts and stakeholders from academic institutions. In addition, the data showed that students required authentic materials, stakeholders supported their learning activities to enhance their communicative competence in English skills, and experts had positive responses toward using authentic materials for teaching ESP courses.

Abstract

This research examines the management practices of Integrated Islamic Schools (IIS) at SDIT Ikhtiar Makassar as a concrete example of the implementation of the IIS model in Indonesia. This research aims to understand how SDIT Ikhtiar Makassar integrates Islamic values into all aspects of learning, identify the factors that support and hinder the implementation of the IIS model at the school, and formulate effective strategies to improve the quality of education at SDIT Ikhtiar Makassar. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method by collecting data through in-depth interviews with the principal and participant observation in the school environment. The research findings show that SDIT Ikhtiar Makassar has successfully integrated Islamic values into the curriculum, teaching methods, and extracurricular activities. The school also involves all stakeholders, including parents, teachers, and the community, in supporting internal quality assurance. However, the school faces financial challenges that are addressed by offering various payment schemes and collaborating with various parties. The research concludes that the IIS model at SDIT Ikhtiar Makassar has the potential to improve the quality of education in Indonesia, but further efforts are needed to address the challenges faced, particularly in terms of funding and stakeholder management.

Abstract

This study delves into the pivotal role of feedback in English writing instruction, a crucial element for enhancing language proficiency and writing skills among English language learners. The primary aim of the research is to examine students' perceptions of teacher feedback and to identify the types of feedback they receive, which are essential for improving teaching strategies and student outcomes. Utilizing a qualitative methodology, the research analyzed responses from 22 students, collected through a questionnaire adapted from the frameworks of Lee (2011) and Ellis & Sheen (2011) to reflect the local educational setting. The results reveal a mixed reception to teacher feedback: while it is valued for improving writing skills, it also sometimes causes confusion and anxiety due to unclear instructions or the use of complex metalinguistic symbols. The types of feedback reported include direct, indirect, and metalinguistic feedback. Direct feedback proved effective in enhancing clarity and understanding, whereas indirect and metalinguistic feedback was occasionally linked to negative emotions such as anxiety and embarrassment. Despite these challenges, the study concludes that properly structured feedback can significantly foster cognitive development, prompting students to refine their thought processes, explore ideas independently, and become adept at self-correction. This underscores the need for educators to consider both the content and delivery of feedback to maximize its effectiveness and minimize potential stressors for learners.

Abstract

Language, as an entity that binds human life, has the intention to convey something, perhaps the most complex and most interesting. Among the various languages in Indonesia, Lampung has unique and diverse greetings and is equipped with a set of rules for its use. However, although greetings in Lampung are very important as regional and national cultural assets that need attention and development, not many researchers have studied this. Therefore, this study aims to describe how the Lampung Sai Batin is created and used, especially addressing terms and to describe the use of addressing terms in the Lampung Sai Batin ethnic. The method used is a qualitative descriptive method with interview, observation and documentation through traditional figures of Sai Batin Kepaksian Pernong in West Lampung, Lampung. The study identified four main kinship groups: The Warei group, Apak Kemaman group, Adek Warei group, and the Children’s group. The findings reveal a strong relationship between language and culture, where kinship terms reflect social hierarchy, lineage, and cultural identity. Preserving this kinship system is important because it safeguards traditional values, strengthens intergenerational cultural transmission, and maintains politeness norms embedded in Lampung society. The study also discusses its implications and limitations.
