Abstract

Background. The storytelling method has become a popular approach in English language learning due to its ability to increase student interest and participation. However, quantitative research specifically focussing on the effectiveness of this method in the development of reading skills is limited. Purpose. This study aims to investigate students' perceptions of the effectiveness of the storytelling method in English language learning, with a focus on the development of reading skills. Method. This study uses a quantitative approach by distributing questionnaires to students who are learning English. The questionnaire measured students' perceptions of the effectiveness of the storytelling method in improving their reading skills. Results. The results showed that most students (83.3%) believed that the storytelling method was effective or very effective in improving their interest and understanding of reading skills. However, a small proportion of students (16.7%) had a neutral view on the effectiveness of this method. Conclusion. The findings of this study indicate that the storytelling method is effective in improving students' reading skills in English language learning. By considering students' perceptions and integrating the storytelling approach into the curriculum, educators can enhance students' learning experiences and support the development of reading skills more effectively.

Abstract

Rendahnya kemampuan siswa dalam menyusun konten Bahasa Inggris serta terbatasnya pemanfaatan teknologi, khususnya Artificial Intelligence (AI), di madrasah menjadi latar belakang pelaksanaan kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini. Tujuan kegiatan adalah meningkatkan keterampilan menulis Bahasa Inggris sekaligus literasi digital siswa melalui pelatihan dan pendampingan pemanfaatan aplikasi AI seperti ChatGPT dan Grammarly. Metode yang digunakan adalah pendekatan Participatory Action Research (PAR) dengan melibatkan 27 siswa kelas XI serta guru Bahasa Inggris di MAS Islamiyah Hessa Air Genting. Tahapan kegiatan mencakup persiapan, pelatihan, pendampingan, dan evaluasi. Proses pelatihan dilakukan secara interaktif melalui praktik langsung, diskusi, dan refleksi bersama. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan adanya peningkatan signifikan dalam kemampuan menulis siswa dari aspek struktur kalimat, kosa kata, serta kepercayaan diri, disertai dengan meningkatnya literasi teknologi dan kemampuan berpikir kritis melalui interaksi aktif dengan fitur AI. Kegiatan ini membuktikan bahwa penerapan AI dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris di madrasah dapat menjadi solusi inovatif, inklusif, dan relevan dengan kebutuhan zaman.

Abstract

Background. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) technology have presented various innovative opportunities in the world of education, especially in the development of adaptive learning systems. The diverse understanding of elementary school students and the need for appropriate learning approaches make AI-based learning a promising alternative to improving learning effectiveness. Purpose. This study aims to determine the effect of the application of artificial intelligence in adaptive learning systems on improving student understanding at the elementary school level. The main focus is to see how much this system contributes in accommodating differences in learning styles and students' ability to understand the subject matter. Method. The research method used was a pseudo-experiment with a pretest-posttest control group design. The study population consisted of grade V students at an elementary school in Indonesia, with purposive sampling techniques to determine the experimental and control groups. The instrument is in the form of a concept understanding test and observation of the learning process. Results. The results showed that students who learned with AI-based adaptive systems experienced a significant increase in understanding compared to the control group. The average posttest score of the experimental group was higher with a more even increase. Case studies also show higher learning engagement and increased student motivation. Conclusion. The conclusion of this study states that the application of AI in adaptive learning has great potential in improving student understanding, especially with a personalized approach to material and adjusted learning speed. This technology is able to effectively answer the challenge of differentiating learning at the elementary level.
