Abstract

In the age of globalization, having a working knowledge of English can be beneficial for santriwati. These students may get the chance to study or preach overseas as they pursue their studies of religious knowledge and impart it to others. However, according to a survey done at Hafshawaty Islamic Boarding School, santriwati's level of English proficiency is still quite poor. A pre-experimental investigation was carried out with 16 santriwati of 90 population total in order to address this using a one-group pre-post-test design. Primary data were gathered through interviews, and English-speaking competencies were assessed both before and after speech treatment. To obtain a summary of all the variables, univariate analysis employing a frequency distribution is used, t-test and paired t-test bivariate analysis to ascertain the impact of one variable on another. The improvement of pronunciation, fluency, and vocabulary mastery indicates that practicing speech can improve one's ability to speak English.

Abstract

Pharmaceutical preparations, such as medicines, traditional remedies, and cosmetics, play a vital role in maintaining health. However, many adolescents engage in self-medication without adequate knowledge, including recognizing logos and the forms of medicines on packaging. This lack of literacy increases the risk of incorrect drug use and harmful side effects. Studies indicate that most adolescents rely on information from advertisements or peers and frequently purchase medications without a doctor's prescription, which can jeopardize their health. Education on drug logos and forms is crucial, especially for high school students, to promote rational and responsible drug use. This program aims to enhance students' literacy regarding drug types, how to read information on packaging, and the importance of recognizing visual differences between drugs. The education was conducted through an interactive seminar at SMAU Haf-Sa Zainul Hasan BPPT using a visual approach, introducing various drug forms and logos, as well as how to review information on drug packaging. The results showed a significant improvement in students' understanding. Before the education, only 50% of the students were knowledgeable about drug logos and forms. After the program, 100% of the students demonstrated comprehension, as evidenced by the post-test results. This program successfully highlighted the importance of health education in fostering rational understanding of drug use. Additionally, students are expected to become agents of change by disseminating this knowledge to their families and communities.

Abstract

TOEFL test-takers with limited grammar (structure) proficiency tend to achieve lower scores. To enhance structure skills, continuous and intensive learning and practice are required. However, many test-takers experience difficulties and boredom when studying structure due to its perceived complexity and lack of engagement. Therefore, an interactive and effective learning medium is needed to facilitate easier and more enjoyable grammar acquisition. The TOEFL Test Pro (Android-Based Application) serves as a potential solution to improve the grammar proficiency of students at Universitas Hafshawaty Zainul Hasan. This community engagement program was implemented in three phases: preparation, execution, and evaluation. The program involved 47 first-year students from Universitas Hafshawaty and was conducted at the university’s premises in Pajarakan, Probolinggo. Evaluation results indicate that after the training, students demonstrated greater enthusiasm in learning and answering TOEFL questions, particularly in the structure or grammar section. The accessibility and interactive features of the TOEFL Test Pro application played a key role in increasing students' learning motivation. Additionally, the question explanation feature helped students identify and understand their mistakes, significantly improving their grammar comprehension. The daily reminder feature further encouraged students to consistently access the application and engage in intensive TOEFL practice, ultimately leading to a projected gradual improvement in their scores.

Abstract

This study investigates the design, development, and implementation of a Digital Video Series (DVS) aimed at enhancing Medical English speaking proficiency among health-science students. Using a Research and Development (RD) approach adapted from the Borg and Gall model, the study followed seven systematic stages including needs analysis, planning, product development, expert validation, field testing, and final revision. A one-group pre-test–post-test design was employed with 109 Nursing, Midwifery, and Pharmacy students to measure speaking improvement after the implementation of the DVS, which features authentic clinical communication scenarios. The results demonstrated a substantial increase in speaking performance, with mean scores rising by 13.49 points and a statistically significant difference confirmed through a paired-sample t-test (p .001). Students also reported highly positive perceptions of the videos’ clarity, relevance, and usefulness for supporting communicative practice. Overall, the study provides empirical evidence that systematically developed video-based materials can effectively strengthen communicative competence in English for Medical Purposes (EMP). The DVS offers a feasible and contextually grounded model for integrating multimedia learning resources into EMP curricula, particularly in settings with limited access to authentic clinical exposure.

Abstract

The integration of technology in language learning, particularly Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL), has made online machine translation (OMT) a common tool for EFL students. However, its impact on specific writing skills, such as grammatical accuracy, remains a subject of debate, with concerns about over-reliance and passive learning. This study aimed to empirically investigate the effect of using OMT as a CALL tool on the grammatical accuracy and vocabulary diversity in the writing of Indonesian EFL students. A quasi-experimental design was employed with 57 first-year EFL students, divided into an experimental group (n=30) that used OMT and a control group (n=27) that did not. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test writing assessments and analysed using paired and independent t-tests. A supplementary survey provided qualitative insights into the students' experiences. The experimental group demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in writing scores (mean pre-test=40.83, post-test=76.93; p < 0.001), far exceeding the minimal gain in the control group (mean pre-test=42.70, post-test=45.78). An independent t-test confirmed a significant difference between the groups post-intervention (t=18.004, p < 0.001). Qualitatively, while 80% of users reported proficiency with OMT, 40% noted challenges with contextual understanding. The use of OMT as a CALL tool significantly enhances EFL students' writing performance, particularly in grammatical accuracy. However, to mitigate over-reliance and maximize learning outcomes, educator guidance is crucial to ensure critical and autonomous use of this technology.

Abstract

This study was motivated by students' low self-confidence and English speaking skills, which were influenced by weak learning motivation and limited learning media that lacked variety. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers an innovative solution through interactive applications that can function as personal practice companions. Preliminary study results from interviews with students at MA Model Zainul Hasan show that 75% of students have below-average speaking skills, which is caused by a lack of confidence and limited time for practice. This study aims to determine the effect of using AI as a practice companion on improving students' confidence and English speaking skills. The method used is pre-experimental with a one group pre-test and post-test design, involving 84 students as samples. The research instruments are confidence questionnaires and speaking skill assessments. The results of the analysis using the paired sample t-test showed a significant increase after the intervention: the average confidence increased from 58.95 to 67.08 (p = 0.000), and speaking skills increased from 55.67 to 66.17 (p = 0.000). These findings prove that the use of AI can significantly improve students' self-confidence and speaking skills. This study contributes to the use of technology in English language learning, particularly in developing students' speaking skills and self-confidence.
