Abstract

Acute inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (AIDP) with hepatitis A (HA) is more likely to affect men, develop at a younger age, and have a better prognosis overall. The progression of the Hepatitis A Virus (HAV)-caused liver inflammation and the neurological difficulties could lead to AIDP in the early stages of the hepatitis signs and symptoms. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates 1.5 million clinical HAV cases annually. Extrahepatic complications of this disease are rare. The etiology of HA associated AIDP remains unclear, with cross-reactive HA epitopes between the peripheral nervous system and other authors have hypothesized that the presence of CSF antibodies reflects direct entry into the central nervous system. Our patient presentations favored AIDP most commonly in HA. A 22-year-old man, with no prior significant medical history, presented to neurology emergency with a 3-day history of acute onset, had been complaining of nausea, general weakness, yellowing of the sclera and history of fever for 5 days. Further investigation revealed marked elevation of liver enzymes in a pattern suggestive of hepatocellular processes. Serum titres of hepatitis B, C, and E were negative, but IgM anti-HAV was positive (enzyme immunoassay). Elevation of Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) protein and myelitis transversa shown by magnetic resonance imaging were established. The diagnosis as AIDP was taken and treated by symptomatic and neurology treatment. However, the patient regained strength and underwent physiotherapy during two weeks. Approximately 3 months after discharged, the patient's gait had nearly returned to baseline at follow-up and the symptoms slowly improved.

Abstract

Good communication, especially for students, is important for building relationships with lecturers and peers, as it supports the learning process and prepares students for professional demands. This community service aims to enhance the ethical communication skills of new students, with a focus on verbal and nonverbal aspects. This training involved 70 first-semester students from the English Language Education and English Literature programs, class of 2025, at Universitas Negeri Makassar. The methods employed included lectures, discussions, and practical sessions conducted in a seminar format using a participatory approach. The findings indicated several benefits: (1) Academic – Students learned to express opinions politely, logically, and in an organized manner with lecturers; (2) Social – Students developed empathy, tolerance, and respect for differences; (3) Professional – Students increased awareness of campus dress ethics. The main output of this community service program was an ethical guideline for communication with lecturers and educational staff. The training successfully fostered students' ethical communication skills, both verbal and nonverbal.

Abstract

Keterampilan presentasi akademik dalam Bahasa Inggris merupakan salah satu kompetensi penting yang perlu dimiliki siswa di era global. Namun, pada praktiknya, banyak siswa masih mengalami kesulitan dalam menyampaikan gagasan secara sistematis serta memiliki tingkat kepercayaan diri yang rendah saat melakukan presentasi. Oleh karena itu, kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan presentasi akademik siswa melalui pendekatan Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). Kegiatan dilaksanakan di SMA Negeri 3 Makassar dengan melibatkan 60 siswa selama 12 minggu melalui berbagai aktivitas pelatihan, seperti latihan pengucapan, presentasi terbimbing, diskusi kelompok, dan role play. Metode yang digunakan bersifat partisipatif dengan menekankan praktik komunikasi secara langsung. Evaluasi dilakukan melalui perbandingan hasil pre-test dan post-test, observasi, serta refleksi siswa. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan yang signifikan pada seluruh aspek keterampilan presentasi, meliputi struktur presentasi, kelancaran berbicara, penggunaan bahasa, dan kepercayaan diri, dengan rata-rata peningkatan sebesar 25,4 poin. Aspek kepercayaan diri menjadi komponen dengan peningkatan tertinggi. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa pendekatan CLT efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan komunikasi akademik siswa serta mendorong keberanian mereka dalam menyampaikan gagasan secara lisan. Dengan demikian, integrasi pendekatan CLT dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris direkomendasikan sebagai strategi untuk meningkatkan keterampilan presentasi akademik siswa.
