Abstract

This study explores the lexical density and readability levels of writing produced by IELTS Band 4 students. The main objectives are to assess the lexical density and readability of their writing across ten writing tests. The study employs a descriptive qualitative research method, using data collected from 10 writing tests conducted by IELTS Band 4 students. Lexical density is determined using the "Analyze My Writing" website, while readability is assessed using the Flesch Reading Ease formula and scale. The findings reveal a wide range of lexical density, ranging from 46.98% to 63.93%, indicating varying levels of content richness and complexity in the students' writing. Similarly, readability scores vary significantly, with scores ranging from 34.21 to 66.32, reflecting differences in text difficulty and ease of comprehension. These findings underscore the diverse linguistic proficiency and accessibility of writing among IELTS Band 4 students.

Abstract

Acquisition of a second language can be obtained through the influence of the environment or activities carried out continuously. This study will describe how the effect of viewing on social media YouTube affects the acquisition of a second language for a-three-years old and five years old girl. This study aims to analyze the differences between children aged 3 and 5 years in the acquisition of English vocabulary which is influenced by the child's habit of watching English videos on YouTube. This research is using a qualitative descriptive method. The data collection technique in this research is an interview with children's parents, which is in the form of a conversation between the speaker and the interlocutor where the researcher will ask several questions about vocabulary obtained via YouTube by children aged 3 and 5 years. These habits have an influence on vocabulary acquisition because there are differences in the repetition process of children's viewing. The research found that 3-year-olds can learn many English words and say them naturally by repeating and forming habits. The vocabulary results spoken by the subjects in this study were nouns, verbs, adjectives, phrases and simple sentences. On the other hand, 5-year-olds don't do as well because they watch both English and Indonesian videos, dividing their attention and leading to a lack of understanding and practice.

Abstract

This research investigates the pervasive phenomenon of online hate speech targeting transgender celebrities across Indonesian and International social media platforms. Focusing on experiences of Lucinta Luna and Caitlyn Jenner, the study aims to bridge a critical gap in understanding how cultural contexts shape the prevalence and nature of online harassment directed at transgender public figures. Through a comparative analysis, this research employs a mixed-theory approach that integrates Mondal's (2017) categorization of hate speech types and Kreidler's (2002) framework of hate speech intentions. The findings reveal that both Luna and Jenner share common experiences of online hate speech, with significant occurrences related to their behaviour, physical appearance, and gender identity. Notably, there was an absence of hate speech targeting disability, ethnicity, or race. Furthermore, the study uncovers that the major intentions behind the hate speech took the form of insulting and insinuating rhetoric. By exploring the unique challenges faced by Lucinta Luna and Caitlyn Jenner in navigating online spaces and addressing instances of hate speech, this research seeks to contribute to a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding transgender celebrityhood and online harassment
