Abstract

This study aims to analyze the understanding of first and second-year Chemistry Education students about the global carbon cycle. The design of this research is descriptive research, using the Global Carbon Cycle Diagnostic Instrument (GCCDI) instrument with 11 questions. The subjects of this study were first- and second-year undergraduate students of Chemistry Education at Bengkulu University, with a total of 15 students in each group. The students' understanding was analyzed qualitatively through the survey method. The data were analyzed and categorized into four groups: understand, misconception, doubt, and do not understand for the GCCDI. The students' understanding was categorized into simple, medium, and complex schemes for the survey method. The results indicated that, for first- and second-year students, respectively, the category of understanding comprised 53.31% and 58% of responses, the misconception category accounted for 22.38% and 27.24%, the doubtful category represented 4.8% and 6.65%, and the category of "does not understand" comprised 19% and 7.85%. The survey method was employed to analyze the responses of first- and second-year students on three schemes: simple (40% and 20%), medium (26.6% and 33.3%), and complex (33.3% and 46.6%). The low level of understanding of the carbon cycle indicates the need for more effective learning approaches, such as in-depth curriculum development, the use of interactive learning methods, and the integration of technology to improve students' understanding of the carbon cycle concept in the broader context of science.

Abstract

This research integrates landslide disaster mitigation into physics education, with a focus on environmental pollution and alternative energy for high school students. The research aims to address the frequent landslides in Indonesia, particularly in Central Bengkulu Regency, which can cause significant disruptions. The objective is to develop a model for integrating disaster mitigation into physics education at MAN Insan Cendekia Central Bengkulu. The research method employed is Research and Development (R&D) using the 4D model, limited to the design stage. The research subjects were students in class XI-1 specializing in Physics at MAN Insan Cendekia. The analysis of disaster potential in Central Bengkulu indicates a need for disaster mitigation education. The Butterfly Webbed Concept Map was developed to integrate physics material with disaster mitigation education. It provides a visual representation of the relationship between environmental pollution, alternative energy, resource utilization, and landslide disaster mitigation. This integration can be applied in physics learning for disaster risk awareness for students.

Abstract

The growing concern over plastic waste pollution and its harmful byproducts, such as CO, CO₂, NOₓ, and SOₓ gases from incineration, necessitates alternative and environmentally responsible waste management strategies. At MAN Insan Cendekia Bengkulu Tengah, a boarding school that manages its own waste, the integration of pyrolysis as a cleaner method for plastic waste treatment offers both practical and educational value. This study aimed to contextualize plastic waste pyrolysis within STEM-based learning to enhance students’ environmental knowledge and attitudes through interdisciplinary instruction. A quasi-experimental two-group pre-test–post-test design was employed, involving 32 students divided equally into control and experimental groups. The control group received STEM instruction using a module and video on plastic pyrolysis, while the experimental group engaged in a more immersive approach involving the same materials supplemented with hands-on pyrolysis activities. Results indicated that the experimental group outperformed the control group, with an environmental knowledge normalized gain (N-gain) score of 0.67 (medium), compared to 0.47 (low) in the control group. Additionally, the experimental group achieved higher environmental attitude scores (85) than the control group (76). These findings demonstrate that STEM education incorporating contextual, multimodal, and practical components can significantly enhance students’ conceptual understanding and engagement with environmental issues. The study contributes to the growing body of evidence supporting experiential STEM education as an effective approach for fostering environmental awareness and action in secondary education settings.

Abstract

Abstract

AbstractThe primary objective of this paper is to address the mitigation of disasters resulting from climate change and global warming. Such disasters are the result of increased greenhouse gas emissions, primarily caused by human activities like deforestation and the use of fossil fuels. To analyze the concept of hydrocarbon combustion from basic competencies (KD) 3.3 and 4.3 of chemistry class XI, we employed a qualitative descriptive method supported by a literature review. The paper investigates the relationship between climate change, the greenhouse effect, the carbon cycle, and their effects on the environment and health. Furthermore, it proposes a learning design that combines the Research-Based Learning (RBL) model with the STEAM approach to enhance students' comprehension of climate change, the consequences of hydrocarbon combustion, and emergency response measures. One of the highlighted learning strategies is the creation of an interactive and engaging mini park mockup to facilitate student understanding. The use of technology, specifically machine learning, is recommended for decision making in global warming disaster mitigation. This paper stresses the significance of integrating chemistry learning for knowledge and skills development in KD 3.3 and 4.3, and for understanding global warming and disaster mitigation efforts. The goal is to provide students with science literacy skills as well as the ability to identify concrete actions in reducing the negative impacts of climate change.
