Abstract

Coffee consumption has become a part of people's lifestyles, especially among men. The main component of coffee is caffeine, which has a stimulating effect on the central nervous system. However, excessive consumption can lead to kidney function disorders, which can be identified through increased serum creatinine levels. This study aims to describe creatinine levels in male coffee addicts in Dusun IV, Saentis Village, Percut Sei Tuan District. This research employs a descriptive observational method with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 25 male coffee addicts had their serum creatinine levels measured using the enzymatic method with the Indiko Plus Analyzer. The results showed that the average creatinine level was 1.72 g/dL, with the lowest at 0.77 g/dL and the highest at 2.01 mg/dL. A total of 28% of respondents had high creatinine levels, while 72% were within the normal range. Respondents aged ≥35 years tended to have higher creatinine levels compared to those under 35 years old. Coffee consumption of ≥5 cups per day was associated with increased creatinine levels. This study indicates that excessive coffee consumption may pose a risk to kidney health.

Abstract

Urea and creatinine serve as key indicators in the evaluation of kidney function. Measurement of urea and creatinine levels can be performed using either serum or plasma. This study aims to compare the results of urea and creatinine level examinations obtained from serum and plasma in patients with kidney failure at RSU Indah Bagan Batu. The research method used is descriptive observational with a cross-sectional approach. The study sample consisted of 22 kidney failure patients who underwent urea and creatinine level examinations using an enzymatic method with an automatic analyzer. The results showed that the average urea level in serum was 186.7 mg/dL, while in plasma, it was 184.9 mg/dL, with a p-value of 0.917 (p 0.05), indicating no significant difference. Similarly, the average creatinine level in serum was 14.17 mg/dL, while in plasma, it was 14.15 mg/dL, with a p-value of 0.988 (p 0.05). Based on these findings, it can be concluded that urea and creatinine level examinations can be conducted using either serum or plasma without significant differences in the results.

Abstract

Momordica charantia L. (bitter melon) contains various bioactive compounds that may affect internal organs, including the liver. This study aimed to examine the effect of bitter melon fruit extract on the microscopic structure of the liver in mice (Mus musculus). The research was conducted experimentally using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) without factorial treatment, consisting of five groups: untreated control, aquadest control, and treatment groups receiving bitter melon extract at doses of 750 mg/kg BW, 1500 mg/kg BW, and 2250 mg/kg BW, with five replications each. The extract was administered orally using a gavage needle at a volume of 0.1 mL/10 g BW daily for 40 days. The results showed that the extract did not significantly affect body weight or liver weight. Microscopically, the 750 mg/kg BW and 1500 mg/kg BW doses did not alter liver histology compared to the control, while the 2250 mg/kg BW dose caused histological damage in the form of hepatocyte steatosis. Macroscopically, the liver in the highest dose group appeared paler than in the control group, although the overall shape remained normal in all groups. It can be concluded that high doses of bitter melon extract may induce microscopic liver changes, whereas lower doses do not exhibit hepatotoxic effects.

Abstract

Anemia is a common health issue frequently experienced by individuals in the productive age group, including healthcare workers, and is generally caused by iron deficiency. Red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus) is known to contain iron and vitamin C, which may help increase hemoglobin levels. This study aimed to determine the effect of red dragon fruit juice on the hemoglobin levels of employees at Sri Pamela Hospital, Tebing Tinggi. A pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach was used involving 30 respondents (10 males and 20 females) who consumed 200 mL of red dragon fruit juice daily for 10 consecutive days. Hemoglobin levels were measured before and after the intervention using the Drabkin method and an automated hematology analyzer. Statistical analysis using a paired sample t-test showed a significant increase in hemoglobin levels, both in male (14.99 to 16.33 g/dL) and female (13.51 to 15.35 g/dL) participants, with a p-value of 0.000. In conclusion, red dragon fruit juice effectively increases hemoglobin levels and has potential as a natural nutritional intervention for the prevention of mild anemia.

Abstract

In Indonesia, The frequency Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) in children has increase. According KEMENKES’s data until 18 October 2022 frequency Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) in children has increase and potentially caused by used of drugs syrup containing Ethylene Glycol, with deaths of child reaching up to 60% from 206 cases reports from 20 Provinces in Indonesia. Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) is inability kidneys to filtrate compounds inside the body. Generally characterized by cretainin serum has a levels increase in urine, and disability kidney on homoestatis electrolyte and nitrogen. Inside the kidneys, the ethylene glycol compound will be excreted by the enzyme and oxidized into aldehyde glycol and re-oxidated into oxalate acid compounds as a trigger for kidney stones that will damage the kidney.
