Abstract

This research contributes to ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare service quality and improve the well-being of individuals with disabilities, particularly those with physical disabilities relying on orthotic-prosthetic care in their communities. Currently, there is limited evidence available to guide policy, funding decisions, and practitioners in Indonesia. Study participants included adult orthosis/prosthesis users and parents/guardians of children using these devices, all of whom sought services at the Jakarta I Ministry of Health Polytechnic educational clinic in January to June 2023. Subsequently, the socket fabrication, fitting, and evaluation process took place, utilizing purposive sampling for surveys encompassing demographics and the Modified Orthotic Prosthetic User Survey (OPUS) – Client Satisfaction with Devices and Services. 73% of patients reported satisfaction with high-quality Orthotic-Prosthetic devices, while 86% expressed satisfaction with excellent service. This highlights the effectiveness of the Modified Orthotic Prosthetic User Survey (OPUS) in assessing user satisfaction with prosthetic-orthotic devices and services, underscoring the need for ongoing tool refinement.

Abstract

Background: Low back pain (LBP) is a common musculoskeletal disorder often resulting from poor ergonomics. Students are particularly susceptible to LBP due to prolonged static positions and awkward postures. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a prefabricated lumbar sacral orthosis (LSO) corset in reducing pain intensity and improving functional activity levels among students with LBP in the Dental Health and Prosthetics Orthotics Departments, Poltekkes Kemenkes Jakarta I. Method: A quantitative, pre-experimental one-group pre-test post-test design was employed, involving students from Poltekkes Kemenkes Jakarta I. Results: Among 30 students with LBP, 26 participants (86.7%) experienced a reduction in pain, while 4 (13.3%) continued to report moderate pain. Conclusion: The use of the prefabricated LSO corset significantly reduced pain levels and improved functional activity in affected Dental Health and Orthotics Prosthetics students at Jakarta Polytechnic I in 2024. Suggestions: Future studies should consider a larger participant pool, enhanced research monitoring, and comparisons between corsets with and without support bars for more robust findings.

Abstract

Scoliosis screening in school is essential for early detection before the curve worsens. Many idiopathic scoliosis patients occur in women with an average age of 14 years. They seek treatment when the age has reached skeletal maturity, and abnormalities have interfered with daily activities. Spinal surgery tends to require high costs, ranging from tens of millions to hundreds of millions of rupiah. Knowledge related to the basics of scoliosis is vital for the community because it affects the proper treatment according to their condition. The role of the Orthotist is still lacking in conducting regular scoliosis screening. We use data by purposive sampling based on inclusion criteria in clinics and hospitals that have spinal workshops or treat scoliosis. The study was conducted at two scoliosis clinics in Jakarta and two in Bogor, with quantitative methods via questionnaires and qualitative methods via Forum Group Discussion (FGD). Factors that influence orthotics in conducting scoliosis screening in patients are a lack of orthotic knowledge about appropriate scoliosis screening methods, especially related to indicators of ignorance of the SOSORT Guideline, not knowing the need to screen six parts of the patient's body, knowing the function of ATR and Scoliometer but not knowing how to apply them, and lack of active participation between orthotist and doctors. Several recommendations can be taken to improve scoliosis screening methods. Also a need to increase scoliosis screening knowledge, maximize scoliosis screening performance, and screen for scoliosis diagnosis by involving orthotics.
