Abstract

Nutrition is a critical issue in any country as it can impact the growth and development of children. To ensure that children have a balanced diet, education on nutrition should begin at a young age, ideally when they enter school. With good nutrition knowledge, children are more likely to have a healthy body proportionate to their age. This study aimed to determine the link between elementary school students' knowledge level in Sekolah Indonesia Kuala Lumpur (SIKL) about nutrition and their Body Mass Index. The research used a cross-sectional approach with a correlation method, and the total population was 220 students. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, and 96 students were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data collection was through a questionnaire, which was then analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis, including chi-square statistical tests. The study found a relationship between the level of nutrition knowledge and Body Mass Index in SIKL students, with a p-value of 0.000 < α 0.05. To improve the level of knowledge of primary school children, it is highly recommended to provide education on balanced nutrition.

Abstract

Primary school children are the beginning of providing education about balanced nutrition. Nutrition is still one of the main problems in Indonesia; schoolchildren aged 5-12 years are categorized as thin and very thin. Balanced nutrition can optimize children's growth and development; the more controlled the nutritional intake, the reduced the risk of obesity and malnutrition, so it is necessary to understand healthy and nutritious eating patterns. Sekolah Indonesia Kuala Lumpur is one of the schools for Indonesian children living in Malaysia; in SIKL, there are still Indonesian children who do not have the ideal weight, and the lack of exposure to balanced nutrition education is a factor in not ideal student bodies, according to their age. This activity aims to improve balanced nutrition education for students at an Indonesian elementary school in Kuala Lumpur. The methods used were question-and-answer discussions and filling out pre-test and post-test questionnaires. This community service activity was carried out from July to August 2023 and involved leaders of Malaysia's Aisyiyah Muhamadiyah branch organization. The activity results stated an increase in students worth 24% after being given balanced nutrition education. To maximize the provision of balanced nutrition education to students in Kuala Lumpur Indonesian schools, it is recommended to conduct further research by providing a healthy food catering program provided by the school to see changes in the quality of nutrition consumed by students.

Abstract

The "Adolescent Reproductive Health Education Program for Parents in the Migrant Worker Community of Kampung Pandan, Malaysia" aims to enhance parents' knowledge and involvement in guiding their adolescent children on reproductive health. The migrant worker community faces unique challenges in accessing health education, including the role of parents in educating their children about reproductive health. As faith-based and community-oriented organizations, PCIM and PCIA strive not only to educate but also to empower, particularly by providing relevant skills to improve quality of life. A total of 29 parents participated, with the majority aged 46-55 years and working as laborers or housewives. The results of pre-tests and post-tests showed an improvement in parents' understanding, with 59% demonstrating good comprehension of adolescent reproductive health and 66% showing a positive attitude toward educational activities. However, 24% of participants remained less engaged. Based on these findings, community-based counseling programs. have proven effective, although further approaches are needed to increase the involvement of all participants. Recommendations include targeted mentoring and collaboration with local health institutions.
