Abstract

Cognitive ability is one aspect of early childhood development that needs to be stimulated from an early age. This research aims to determine the application of kamishibai as a medium used in storytelling to improve the cognitive abilities of children aged 5 - 6 years. This study used a one group pretest-posttest design, measuring cognitive abilities before and after intervention. The subjects of this research were 25 students aged 5 - 6 years at Luqmanul Hakim Insan Madani Kindergarten, Bandung. The results of research on the Pretest show that children's cognitive abilities 57,7 % with Developping According to Expectation (BSH) criteria. Meanwhile, the Posttest shows that the child's cognitive abilities have increased to 79,3% with the criteria of Very Well Developed (BSB). Based on the results of this research, it can be said that the Storytelling Method using Kamishibai can improve children's cognitive abilities. Keywords: cognitive ability, kamishibai, storytelling

Abstract

Assessment for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has undergone significant development over the past decades. This study systematically reviews pragmatic assessment instruments used in clinical contexts for children with ASD. From an initial pool of 210 articles identified through academic database searches, a stepwise screening process (identification, abstract/title screening, and eligibility review) resulted in 21 eligible articles for full analysis. From these articles, 26 pragmatic assessment instruments were identified and systematically coded based on method of administration, target age group, assessed pragmatic features, and year of publication. The review reveals notable advancements, such as the adoption of video-based stimuli, inclusion of nonverbal elements, and use of multimodal approaches. However, several critical limitations remain, particularly the reliance on indirect parent or teacher reports (54%), which may overlook the dynamic aspects of social interaction. Most tools emphasize basic communicative functions (e.g., requesting, responding), with only 38% evaluating paralinguistic elements such as intonation and facial expressions. Moreover, approximately 80% of the instruments are designed for children under 12, leaving adolescents—who face increasingly complex pragmatic demands, including digital communication—underrepresented. Additionally, 88% of instruments were developed within Western cultural frameworks, raising concerns about cross-cultural validity in high-context cultures such as Indonesia. Two underserved groups also emerged: nonverbal children with ASD and adolescents primarily engaged in digital interaction. These findings suggest an urgent need for more inclusive, developmentally appropriate, and culturally responsive pragmatic assessment tools that can accommodate diverse communication styles and sociocultural contexts to ensure accurate and meaningful clinical evaluations.

Abstract

Speech disorders that occur in the elderly, especially dysarthria, are a problem that causes impaired communication skills and a decline in quality of life due to neurological disorders. The elderly's lack of knowledge about risk factors and early signs of dysarthria often leads to delays in early intervention. This study aims to provide education on the risk factors for dysarthria and to assess the effectiveness of education in improving the knowledge of the elderly. This activity was carried out using a lecture method through verbal means, interactive discussions and question and answer sessions, as well as video screenings and facial exercise simulations. There were 30 elderly participants from the Salimah Elderly School, Arcamanik, Bandung, who participated in this activity. The results of the t-test on the pre-test and post-test showed significant values marked by a p-value of less than 0.05, namely 0.03. This indicates that the education provided was effective in increasing the knowledge of the elderly.

Abstract

Children with cerebral palsy (CP) often experience oromotor dysfunction, leading to difficulties in swallowing and speech, which can affect nutrition, communication, and social interaction. This community service activity aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of parents, caregivers, and educators in applying oromotor massage therapy to support swallowing and speech abilities in children with CP. The activity was conducted at Politeknik Al Islam Bandung on January 7, 2026, involving 25 participants. The methods included interactive lectures, demonstrations, simulations, supervised practice, and discussion sessions, accompanied by pre-test and post-test assessments. The results showed a significant increase in participants’ understanding and ability to perform oromotor massage correctly, including proper techniques for facial, lip, tongue, jaw, and pharyngeal stimulation. Participants also gained practical experience in adjusting techniques according to each child’s condition. The findings indicate that structured, repetitive, and guided oromotor massage can effectively improve swallowing and speech functions while empowering families to play an active role in home-based rehabilitation. The study concludes that this intervention is feasible, practical, and beneficial, and it is recommended that such training be regularly implemented and integrated into daily routines to optimize children’s functional outcomes. Abstract
