Abstract

This study analyzes the use of alphabetic symbols among deaf children who use SIBI (Indonesian Sign System) at Sekolah Luar Biasa (Special Needs School) Negeri 1 Watampone, using the semiotic theory of Charles Sanders Peirce. The aim of this research is to understand how deaf children interpret and produce alphabetic symbols within the context of classroom learning. Peirce's semiotic theory, which divides signs into three main elements—representamen, object, and interpretant—is used to analyze this visual communication process. A qualitative method was employed in this study, with data collected through direct observation and interviews with teachers and students. The findings indicate that the use of alphabetic symbols in SIBI not only aids in language learning but also plays a role in the development of cognitive and communication skills in deaf children. Furthermore, the study found that the interpretation of alphabetic symbols by deaf children is strongly influenced by their learning context and individual experiences. Therefore, the use of SIBI has proven effective in supporting the communication needs of deaf children at SLB Negeri 1 Watampone.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of using E-Short Story media in teaching children’s story reading skills to fifth-grade students of SD 12/79 Batu Gading, Mare District. The research employed a quasi-experimental method with a one-group pretest–posttest design. The research subjects consisted of 32 fifth-grade students. The instrument used was a reading comprehension test administered before and after the implementation of the E-Short Story media. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a t-test to identify differences in students’ learning outcomes before and after the treatment. The results showed an improvement in students’ ability to read and understand children’s stories after the use of E-Short Story media. The mean posttest score was higher than the mean pretest score, indicating that the E-Short Story media was effective in improving reading skills. The use of E-Short Story media also increased students’ learning motivation, comprehension of story content, and active participation in the learning process. Therefore, E-Short Story media is recommended as an alternative learning medium for teaching reading in elementary schools.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the forms of allegorical signs in characters in the novel Rafilus by Budi Darma using a semiotic approach proposed by Charles Sanders Peirce. This research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive design. Data were collected through literature review, note-taking, and reflective-introspective techniques, while data validity was ensured through triangulation. The data analysis applied the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results reveal that the forms of allegorical signs in the novel Rafilus are represented through five main characters: Rafilus, Jumarup, Van der Kloning, Pawestri, and Munandir. These characters are constructed as semiotic representations encompassing icons, indexes, and symbols. Iconic signs are reflected in the resemblance between the characters’ traits, conditions, or events and certain realities. Indexical signs emerge through causal relationships between the characters’ experiences and the meanings produced. Meanwhile, symbolic signs are indicated by the association between characters and socially and culturally constructed conventions. Thus, the use of allegorical signs in the characters functions not merely as a narrative element but also as a system of signs that constructs complex meanings. These three forms of signs collectively position the characters as allegorical entities representing human realities in social, moral, and existential dimensions.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the representation of migrant women characters in the novel Sebongkah Tanah Retak by Rida Fitria through the perspective of intersectional feminism. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach with an intersectional feminist literary analysis. The primary data consist of the novel text, while secondary data are obtained from relevant books, journals, and scholarly articles. Data collection is conducted through library research by reading, examining, and noting sections that represent the experiences of migrant women characters. Data analysis uses a thematic content analysis model by identifying patterns of representation based on intersectionality categories. Data validity is strengthened through triangulation of theories and literature sources. The results indicate that migrant women characters are represented in a complex and multidimensional manner, particularly through the experiences of the character Ijah. This representation reveals the close interconnection between gender identity, migrant worker status, and socio-economic conditions that intersect with one another. From an intersectional feminist perspective, Ijah’s experiences reflect how these overlapping identities shape a life marked by vulnerability while simultaneously illustrating women’s subordinate position within social structures. Migrant women characters are portrayed not only as victims but also as subjects who possess awareness of the situations they face. This representation emphasizes that the experiences of migrant women cannot be understood in a singular way, but rather must be seen as the result of interactions among various social factors that produce complex forms of inequality.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to explain the discourse structure of the novel Gadis Pantai by Pramoedya Ananta Toer in representing hegemonic practices through linguistic aspects. The primary focus is on text-level analysis within Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis framework. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with primary data consisting of narrative and dialogue excerpts that reflect power relations, particularly those related to social class and gender. Secondary data are drawn from relevant theoretical sources to support the analysis. Data were collected through documentation using reading and note-taking techniques, while data analysis was concentrated on the textual dimension of Fairclough’s model. The researcher served as the main instrument, supported by theoretical triangulation to ensure data validity. The findings indicate that the discourse structure at the textual level reveals the use of descriptive diction rich in ideological meaning. Lexical relations and contrasts are employed to emphasize differences in social positions among characters. In addition, the use of fragmentary sentences reflects the psychological pressure and power imbalance experienced by the main character. Cohesion and coherence also play a crucial role in constructing a consistent discourse that represents dominance by certain groups. Overall, the linguistic structure in the novel functions not only as a means of communication but also as an ideological tool to reproduce and reinforce hegemonic practices within a particular social context.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms of social inequality in the novel Orang-Orang Proyek by Ahmad Tohari through a sociological approach to literature. The method used is qualitative with a descriptive-analytical design. The primary data consist of the novel text, while secondary data are derived from various supporting references such as books, journals, and scholarly articles. Data collection is conducted through a reading and note-taking technique, while data analysis employs content analysis with the researcher as the main instrument. The validity of the data is ensured through theoretical triangulation.2The results of the study indicate that social inequality in the novel is manifested in several main forms. First, there is inequality in access to power, where the project elites have full dominance in decision-making, while workers occupy subordinate positions. Second, economic inequality is reflected in the unequal distribution of capital and welfare between project authorities and laborers who face limited living conditions. Third, inequality in education and life opportunities is evident in the limited access of lower-class groups to self-improvement and social mobility. Fourth, there is unequal control over information and opportunities for political participation, which further strengthens the dominant position of the elites. In addition, structural domination is also reflected in practices that restrict the participation of lower-class communities in the development process. Thus, the novel represents social inequality as a complex structural phenomenon involving unequal relations of power, economic resources, and social access, while also illustrating how development actually widens the gap between elite groups and the lower classes.
